BC: The theme or moral of this story is that money won't buy happiness. | Also you should be happy with what you have.

2: John Steinbeck 1902- 1968

3: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California fictions, The Pastures of Heaven (1932 and To a God Unknown (1933). Steinbeck wrote three powerful novels about California's laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The last decades of his life were spent in New York City with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Steinbeck later died in 1968, having won a Nobel prize in 1932.

4: The setting of this story is in La Paz, Mexico. The surrounding waters of la Paz were first named the Bermejo Sea. La Paz received its modern name from Sebastián Vizcaíno. La Paz has endured numerous conquistadors, pirates, missionaries, and entrepreneurs, creating a flowery historical mosaic of risk, daring, and adventures.

6: Kino: - Hardworking native who is a pearl diver - Juana's husband - Coyotito's father - a simple man who lives in a brush house - finds the "Pearl of theWorld"

7: Juana: -wife of Kino - Coyotito's mother - loyal to her husband - becomes convinced that the pearl is evil

8: Coyotito: - Kino and Juana's son - stung by scorpion - killed by trackers - too young to improve the situation

9: Juan Thomas: -Kino's brother - loyal to his family - believes in Kino's plans - sympathetic to Kino and Juana - warns Kino of the dangers in trying to sell his pearl

10: Chapter One | Kino wakes up and turns over to see Juana awake. They get up and goes outside. Then there is a scorpion on Coyotito's hammock. Kino then hears the song of Evil. In his attempt to kill the scorpion, Kino jerks and the scorpion falls and sting Coyotito's on the shoulder. After attempting to suck the venom out, Juana and Kino go to see the doctor, they are told that the doctor has been called to a more serious case. Filled with anger Kino punches the wall.

11: Since the doctor won't see them, they go to the sea to find pearls so they can pay for the doctor. Kino finds many oysters. He saves the biggest oyster for last. When he opens it, it contains the biggest pearl ever seen. Known as the "Pearl of the World". Amazingly Coyotito's wound is improving in the site of the pearl. Kino let's out a yell and other canoers come to see what was happening. | Chapter Two

12: Chapter Three | Before they get back to their house everyone knows about the pearl. Kino thinks about what he will do with the money he will get for the pearl. At night the priest and doctor come over to the house. While there Kino hears the song of evil again. Kino then wraps his pearl in cloth and buries it in a hole. Kino then wakes up in the middle of the night to the sound of an intruder coming in and looking for the pearl.

13: They go to La Paz to sell the pearl. While on the way Juan Thomas discusses that Kino might be cheated. Kino is angry that the pearl buyers tried to cheat him of the value of the pearl. They go back to their house. While asleep, Kino senses evil and is attacked. Juana begs Kino to discard the evil pearl, but Kino insists on cashing it. Kino makes a plan to set out on the canoe in the morning to the capital. | Chapter Four

14: Juana steals the pear to throw it back into the sea. Kino catches her and punches her in the face. Kino is attacked after getting the pearl back. Kino killed one of his attackers. Juana says they must flee because of the crime committed. Someone burned down their house. They went Juan Thomas' house to tell him of the plan. Then they leave for the mountains. | Chapter Five

15: They go into the mountains because trackers are following them. The trackers kill Coyotito because the think it is a coyote crying. On Kino and Juana's way back home, they throw the pearl back into the sea. | Chapter Six
