4: Character Descriptions Kino: A young Indian, bound by poverty and the old beliefs of his race. When he finds a magnificent pearl, he dreams of a great future for his son and family.
5: Character Descriptions Juana: Kino's faithful wife, who lives within her means. She shows strong character when she deals with her son's infliction and also when Kino decides to escape with the Pearl.
6: Character Descriptions Coyitito Kino and Juana's infant son, who is their hope for the future. He is a central character because his parents' actions all revolve around him. He is murdered in the novel.
7: Character Descriptions Juan Tomas Kino's elder brother. He protects Kino while in hiding and gives advice since he is the eldest in the family.
8: Character Descriptions Apolonia Juan's wife. She displays obedience and devotion to Kino and his family.
9: Character Description The Doctor A vicious and selfish man. He refuses to help Coyotito because Kino does not have the money to pay him. The doctor dreams of a great life in France and feels that only by fleecing others will he realize his dreams
10: Chapter 1 Summary In chapter 1, the baby, Coytitio, was stung by a scorpion. Juana and Kino tried to go and see the doctor but, because of thier race, the doctor wouldnt help them. The doctor was spanish and Kino's family was indian.
11: Chapter 2 Summary In Chapter 2, Juana and Kino went pear diving. Kino found a big,lucent,pearl in the bottom of the ocean. They were scared to open it so quickly, because they believe that if you want something too much, then it will drive the luck away. Juana and Kino are very superstitious. When they opened it, Kino had found "The Pearl Of The World."
12: Chapter 3 Summary In Chapter 3, the news of Kino finding "The Pearl Of The World" spread quickly. Kino also started too see his future in the pearl.The news got back too the doctor, since he thought that Kino and his family had money he finally agreed to go see kino, so did the priest. When the doctor finally arrives, he doesnt really help the situation he just makes coytito sicker by giving him ammonia. The same night the doctor and priest visited, Kino was attacked for the first time.
13: Chapter 4 Summary In Chapter 4, Kind and Juana travel to La Paz to sell the pearl to pearl buyers. The first guy the went too offered one thousand pesos. Kino didnt accept this offer. He finally realized that he was being tricked. They all worked for the same man. Kino decided he was going to go to the capital to sell his pearl for a much larger price.Juana starts to feel that the pearl is not actually good luck but it is bringing evil upon them.
14: Chapter 5 Summary In Chapter 5, Juana tries to throw the pearl back why Kino was sleeping. Kino then attacked her without any emotion. He was then attacked by an unknown figure. Juana keeps trying to convince Kino that the pearl was evil, not good luck. Kino had found that the attackers had put a hole in his boat. The bost was very special to Kino, it was givin too him by his late grandfather. On way back to the house Kino and Juana came to realize that their house was on fire. The brush house had burned down. Kino remembered that he had killed a man, so he and Juana hid out with his brother, untill dusk.
15: Chapter 6 Summary In Chapter 6, Kino and Juana run away to the mountains. On the way there Kino starts to realize the pearl is evil, and that it is bringing the bad luck. Kino realized they were being followed by trackers, and that if they found him they would take the pearl and kill him. So, Kino figured out a plan. He had to attack the trackers before they got him. While the attack was going on, the trackers had mistake coyitito's cry for a coyote's cry. The had shot coytito. Juana and Kino headed back home, everyone was crowed around when they arrive, they had only moved out of the was when they seen the what Juana was carrying. Kino and Juana finaly threw the pearl back.
16: Theme: In The Pearl, John Steinbeck show that wealth can have dire consequences as it breeds greed, envy, and evil; sometimes in the possessor of the wealth and sometimes in those who surround the wealthy. Kino's discovery of the pearl should have brought him wealth and happiness; instead, it brings ill tidings and creates vast sorrow in his life.
17: Information About The Author John Steinbeck: John Earnest Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, on February 27, 1902. He was influenced during his early years by his mother, Olive Hamilton Steinbeck, who was a public school teacher. She spent time reading to and teaching her son, and he developed a great appreciation for literature. Steinbeck himself was not a brilliant student, but he wrote for his high school newspaper. He also performed well enough to enter Stanford University, but he did not attend regularly and never earned a degree. During his college years, he contributed poems and short stories to the Stanford literary magazine. In 1925, he went to work in New York; but finding the fast life unsuitable to his creative needs, he returned to California and started writing his novels. Cup of Gold, his first novel, marked his entry into the literary world in 1929
