This is the doctor. He was very rude to Kino's family. He did not treat them or the village people fairly. He came running wanting to treat Coyotito ounce Kino had found the pearl. He was very snobby and wasn't very good at his job. He lied and this is just the beginning to the things he has done.

Chapter One Summary Chapter one states that Kino and his family(Juana and Coyotito)live in brush houses. Also they live in La Paz, Mexico. There son Coyotito was in his box in the brush house. Kino saw a scorpion crawling on the string of Coyotito's box. Coyotito hit the string and the scorpion fell on Coyotito and stung him on the shoulder. Juana sucked as much venom out as possible. Kino them has the song of evil blaring in his ear. He has many of these types of songs.

Juana asked for the doctor which was a very unusual thing. Word had spread and the people of the brush houses chattered. So Juana then decided that they would go to the doctor since they would not come to them. In the end the doctor would not treat the baby. The doctor said " Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for 'little Indians'". So as you can see the doctor is criticism of the Indians.

Chapter Two Summary Kino, Juana and Coyotito went out in the canoe. The canoe had been handed down for many generations so it meant alot to Kino. They went out in the canoe in the ocean. Juana put a poultice of seaweed on Coyotito's shoulder. It brought the swelling down, it pretty much healed it. Kino looked in the ocean trying to find pearls in the oyster. Juana prayed to find a pearl to be able to go to the doctor. He opened one of the oysters finding a big lucent pearl.

The doctor says, "I am treating his child for a scorpion sting". Kino thinks of thing he wants to do with the money for the pearl. He especially wants Coyotito to go to school and get a good education. Then the priest visits Kino and his family. The priests says, "I hope you remember to give some of the fortune to the church". Then the doctor came and tricked Juana into letting him treat Coyotito anyway.

Continue Chapter Three Summary The doctor gave the baby medicine that made Coyotito sick. Then he came back and gave him some more medicine to make him better from the first medicine. Then Kino says he's going to the capital. Kino buried the pearl. Then Kino was attacked, that's when Juana is truly terrified that the pearl is evil and begs him to throw it back into the sea.

Chapter Five Summary Juana in the middle of the night gets the pearl and runs toward the shore. Kino hears her and follows her. Kino strikes her in the face and kicks her in the side. Then he was attacked by somebody. He stabbed the person killing them. Kino then realizes he lost the pearl, but Juana finds it on the path and gives it to him. Two were on foot and one by horseback. Kino and his family hung back to let them pass so they could lose them. They also took branches to sweep the tracks away. Eventually thay got to a cave and settled down there. They were about one to two hours ahead of trackers. 20: SETTING The coast of La Paz, Mexico

THEME Well to me it means that you think you want something then when you get it it's not all as it seems. When Kino found the pearl he wanted good things for his family, but he became greedy and it cost his son's life (Coyotito). The theme in the end is greed cost.
