FC: The Tale of the Three Brothers | as retold by April Demsko
There were once three brothers walking a road at twilight. They came to a river and, having magical powers, built a bridge over it. Death, enraged at having lost three victims, granted each brother a gift for having defeated him.
The first brother was a proud man and wanted to humiliate Death further, so Death fashioned a wand, more powerful than any other, out of an elder tree. The brother ventured to a town and defeated a wizard with whom he had once quarreled. While he slept, another slipped into his tent and slit the brother’s throat, taking his wand.
The second brother requested the power to bring others back from the dead, so Death took a stone from the riverbank and said that, when turned thrice in hand, the dead would return. The brother went home and brought back his late bride, but she was sad and did not belong in this world. He noticed this and hung himself, so to be with her again.
The youngest brother was the wisest of the three. He did not trust Death and only wanted the power to continue to escape Death and live his life. So reluctantly, Death gave his own Cloak of Invisibility to the brother, and they parted ways.
Death searched for many years but could not find the brother. It was only when the brother had attained a great age that he removed the cloak and gave it to his son. He then greeted Death as an old friend and, as equals, left this world.
