Volcano | Intro It was a regular summer day in Pompeii, Italy, when suddenly the nearby Mt. Vesuvius blew its top. The people screamed as they were buried alive in the falling ash. Their houses burned down by the swift lava. This mega city, Pompeii was destroyed by a volcano in just three hours.

The people were preserved in the position they died in by ash.

Most volcanoes form on "The Ring of Fire" along the Pacific Plate, though the Mid-Atlantic Rift, in the Atlantic, has the most active volcanoes. Many islands form in the Ring of Fire. These include Java and New Zealand.

Formation | When two plates move apart magma fills the gap. Over time a volcano forms on the surface. As pressure builds, the volcano erupts. | Formation | Inside and Out | An eruption can release gases, such as pyrocrastic flows. The more gas a volcano has, the more explosive the eruption is. Magma, such as Basalt, Andesile, Docite and Rholire can also be found in volcanoes, which also have four types: Strata, Shield, Cinder-Cone and Dome.

Mauna Loa magma tube. | Mauna Loa erupts | On Hawaii, volcanoes have magma tubes. Magma tubes are tubes that magma flows through, they are hidden under ground and carry magma to different places . There can be openings in the ground where you can see the magma flow. | Magma Tubes

Mauna Loa | Mauna Loa, in Hawaii, is the largest volcano on Earth. Mauna Loa means "Long Mountain". It is 4,170 meters (six miles) above sea level. | Activity and Type | Mauna Loa has erupted thirty-three times in the last 200 years. It is the largest active volcano in the world. It is a shield volcano. | Under the Sea | Mauna Loa started under the ocean. From the under water start to its tallest peak, it is taller than Mt. Everest.

Olympus Mons | Did you know that Olympus Mons is the largest volcano in the solar system? It is on Mars and is very active. | Olympus Mons

Basic Facts | As deadly as volcanoes are, they can have a good side, such as bringing up gold and diamonds in their eruptions. The word volcano comes from the Latin word "Vulcan," who was also the Roman god of fire. On average, 50 volcanoes on land erupt each year, 2 or 3 of which had been inactive for long periods of time. | Indonesia | About 2,000 active volcanoes are on earth. Indonesia has more than any country in the world(About one tenth). It is along the Ring of Fire. | Largest Volcanoes | Some of the largest volcanoes are right in the U.S., like Mauna Loa or the Yellowstone Volcano. If the Yellowstone Volcano were to erupt, ash would reach over 2/3 of the 48 contiguous states.

If you live in a volcanic hazard zone, you should make evacuation plans. You should have a route and backup route in mind. If, during an eruption, you get separated from your family, you should have a plan for getting back together. You should also assemble a disaster kit, including goggles and breathing masks for every member in your household. | So you will be ready. | Preparation
