FC: WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE 1955 | By Maggie Hale

"WE DIDNT START THE FIRE" by Billy Joel 1955 Billy Joel wrote a song about all that had been going on between 1949-1989. He wrote about some of the main highlights of each year, and in this book i have focused on one of the years that he included in his song. 1955 was a very special year, and many great things happened...

On April 18th at the age of 76, Albert Einstein died. About a week before dying, he wrote a paper that he wished to have published saying that all nuclear weapons should be given up, and why. He said “There lies before us, if we choose, continual progress in happiness, knowledge, and wisdom. Shall we, instead, choose death, because we cannot forget our quarrels?” Einstein was able to gain the respect of millions by achieving so much in his earlier life. | One of his great achievements was the discovery of the relationship between energy, mass and light resulting in the equation E=mc2. This equation is what began the whole idea of splitting atoms and making atomic bombs. It was said that Einstein never liked the bomb, because of all the harm that it could cause. He was able to tell the world the ways that he felt before he died, which could possibly have saved us all from a nuclear war which could wipe out all of humanity. Einstein was one of the most brilliant men of all time. Through the mind of Einstein we learn that science is a very powerful force, but it must be used with caution. | Einstein

James Dean was a huge idol to many of his teen followers. His was most famous in the 1950’s and his two most famous movies were both filmed in 1955. Many of his roles ended up being young rebels such as in his movie “Rebel Without a Cause.” Dean was an amazing actor; he was nominated for 2 academy awards, and won a Special Achievement Award for best dramatic actor. Sadly he was unable to receive this award, because he died in 1955, the year before the award was given. | James Dean

James Dean bought himself a Porsche after the success of one of his movies. As he was driving back to visit his family on September 30th James Dean was in a terrible accident. From the evidence of the accident, it is believed that there was another car, a Ford, which was speeding on the road Dean was on. James Dean was driving with his mechanic in the passenger seat. The two cars collided, and James died instantly. He was so young and so admired, but the 1950’s film star was gone. He is still remembered today by his many films, and the impressions he left on his many followers.

In 1955 Brooklyn was very excited with the victory of the Dodgers baseball team. There are three incredible baseball teams in New York. There are the Yankees from the Bronx, the Giants from Manhattan and, of course, the Dodgers from Brooklyn. These three teams have always been among the best, and have often made it to the World Series of baseball. The Yankees were usually the team that took home the victory, but in ’55 that all changed. The Dodgers and the Yankees were playing hard in the final game of the World Series. The Yankees were in the lead, but then the Dodgers started getting runs, and winning innings. They were on a roll. They came back from very far behind, and beat the Yankees for the first time in a long time. Everyone in Brooklyn was ecstatic. They were so happy that their team had won, because they were usually defeated by the Yankees. They had done it. It was a thrilling time for everyone in Brooklyn. | Brooklyn's Got a Winning Team

There have been many different Disney movies and Disney creations through the years. Davy Crockett was more of a television show than a movie, but there were only three episodes. All episodes were made in 1955. Later, the three different episodes were put together to make a movie. One of the things that made the Davy Crocket t King of the Wild Frontier episodes really popular was the Ballad of Davy Crockett. The Ballad of Davy Crockett is the theme song for all the episodes of Davy Crockett, and it became a huge hit instantly. | Davy Crockett

There were over ten million copies of the Ballad of Davy Crocket record sold. The story is based on the real Davy Crockett that lived in the late 1700s who hunted on the wild frontiers in Tennessee. Crockett was very famous in his time, and he is still very famous as his legend remains through the movie created by the Walt Disney Company. .

Peter Pan was the boy who never wanted to grow up. He is now known as the happy cartoon character in a movie with magic and flying, fairies. The original story of Peter Pan is said to have been more violent. There were evil pirates and fights and it was much more gruesome. The Disney version still has fights and pirates, but it is happier and there is not as much violence. The original version of Peter Pan was a play, and there was a widely known tradition that involved using a woman to play the role of Peter. Along with the Disney movie, the play of Peter Pan became a huge Broadway hit in 1955. In the later Broadway version of Peter Pan a woman was again used to play Peter. Peter Pan has been one of the most praised bedtime and childhood stories. Even today people create new ways to show their love to Peter Pan by presenting their ideas of him to the world. Peter Pan is a boy that has lived with us all, and continues to live by the plays and movies that tell his story. | Peter Pan

Elvis Presley is one of the most famous rock and roll singers of all time. In 1955 he released one of his original songs, Heartbreak Hotel. It was his first to ever hit the top rankings and number one on the single list. Elvis has many spectacular music marvels such as Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock and That’s When Your Heartaches Begin. Elvis was a musical genius. He was truly the king of rock and roll, which is how he got his nick name, “The King.” | Elvis Presley

Many people loved Elvis. One of the main reasons people did, was because in a lot of places and schools his music was banned. Banned things tend to be more interesting. Elvis Presley’s music was banned for the most part because he sang more about love and affection in more physical ways than people were used to. People were a bit uncomfortable with some of his lyrics, and it didn’t really help their feelings toward him when he added in dancing and thrusting. Elvis was a great musician and certainly made a breakthrough in the musical world.

 Disneyland

So many people young and old enjoy spending a fun filled day in Disneyland. Disneyland first opened in Anaheim, California on the 7th of July in 1955. Walt Disney wanted a place for all the employees of his movie company to “relax” when they were working on a movie, so he came up with the idea of a theme park, but he got carried away. It is said that most of the design and layout ideas came from Walt Disney himself, then they finally decided to make the park a public recreation center based on all the many Disney movies and characters. The famous magic castle is located around the center of the park, it is not the entrance, but it does lead to the rides that have more to do with princesses. Disneyland is a place based for kids to have a fun time while being surrounded with their favorite Disney characters. The theme park was not only directed at little kids, but teens and adults as well. There are many rides that are scarier to ride, and more thrilling that might be a bit too much for small children, but they keep the older ones happy and entertained. Disneyland is a fun place for all ages to go and have fun, it makes days happy.
