Best wishes for your new post. i hope you make many new friends. Sue | I don't believe in league tables but.... | PA number five is a winner | You are all entitled to my opinion | mai pen rai | Assembly Notes | All of our leavers this year got into their universities of choice, yet we were told that thousands of good A level students would be left without places. Why did this not happen to our girls? I suggest five reasons: firstly, Derby High School is not obsessed with academic work to the exclusion of everything else. For example we have two Reading Weeks, where no homework is set. Most girls ‘only’ do 9 full GCSEs and three A levels. This does not stop them getting on to the most competitive courses at the best universities, but it does give them time to think and have other interests. Secondly, girls follow a range of activities outside the classroom to develop the skills and self-knowledge which make them interesting and confident young women. Thirdly, our A level tutor groups are small and girls are given excellent advice and support when they make their university applications, Fourthly, all our U6 girls have prefect roles, so they are able to further develop their leadership and teamwork skills in their final twelve months at school. Finally, they have many learning opportunities outside the classroom including the Engineering Education Scheme and numerous trips overseas. In short they are truly educated in the broadest sense. 37: And finally .. Vision, drive, innovation, perception, discernment, the ability to take calculated risks and the genuine desire to develop potential in individuals and a community are some of the things which I constantly saw in your leadership and admired and respected you for. It was a privilege Colin to work alongside you as your deputy. The journey, represented here in such a wonderful pictorial way, has been exciting, rewarding, sometimes scary, but never ever anything but hugely successful. You got the balance right between working hard and playing hard, never losing sight of the importance of moving forward in education and school leadership. So you leave behind a job well done and I hope you take with you happy memories of the things which together, with you as Head, we all achieved and were part of along the way, which made it so rewarding and successful! As you reflect on your time at Derby High it will be clear just how far the school has progressed from the one you took on over eight years’ ago and the credit for the far-reaching, formidable reputation that the school holds is certainly . You have an exciting new adventure ahead and I wish you all the very best for the future Anne
