S: The Life and Times of Troop 221!

BC: "I'm glad we had the times together just to laugh and sing a song, seems like we just got started and then before you know it, the times we had together were gone. " -Dr. Seuss

FC: The Life and Times of Troop 221!

This book is meant to serve as a memory of all our Troop 221 Girl Scout years together. Take it with you and pull it out from time to time. Enjoy it when you are lonely, share it with friends, new and old, and never forget Troop 221.

"You are loved for the little girl you used to be, for the special woman you are, and for the precious daughter you will always be." -Unknown

OUR CEREMONIES | "Humans love truth and justice, and rejoice in ceremonies that honor those qualities. For that sentiment we should indeed thank God." -Alfred Day Hershey

Bridging through the years! | Daisies to Brownies | Brownies to Juniors | Juniors to Teens

"I think the most enduring lesson I was taught through my experiences of being a Girl Scout was that I was a member of a larger community. I out-grew my uniforms and badges years ago, but the memories of visiting nursing homes or organizing Earth Day tree plantings or my summers camping with girls from all different backgrounds will stay with me always." -Natalie Merchant | Bronze Award Ceremony and Recipients

Playing with a kitten at the SPCA | Taking our dogs to the Millbrook Exchange Dog Park. | We earned our Bronze Award as a troop by making and donating toys for the animals at the local SPCA.

These girls worked so hard to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award and we were very proud of them! This was a wonderful day for each of them and their families. The only thing that would have made it perfect would have been to have Rachel there. She also earned her Silver Award but did not participate in the ceremony. Congratulations to Sarah and family, Allison and family, Emily and family, and Rachel and family. | Girl Scout Silver Award

Parties, Celebrations, Day Camp, and Summer Meetings | "Yesterday brought the beginning, tomorrow brings the end, and somewhere in the middle we became the best of friends." -Unknown

The Taylors were wonderful about inviting us to use their pool... | on more than one occasion!

Occasionally, we had summer meetings at Ms. Kim's house. | We played games and did crafts. | Sometimes, we worked on badges. | It was hot but fun!

Our day camps always had themes. For example, this one was Around the World! We had crafts and speakers from all over the world. It was great!

This one had a circus theme. Everyone enjoyed our Friday carnivals...especially the Program Aids who always ran them. | Rachel and Allison made particularly great circus clowns. Can't you tell how much they loved doing it?

Smartie and Rainbow were in attendance at every camp throughout their Girl Scout years!

Christmas was always a fun time! Sometimes we did a little play...

and sometimes we were just a bit silly!

Our final troop meeting of 2011 was a Christmas cookie exchange with Secret Santa gifts. Rachel and Samantha prepared a yummy treat of assorted appetizers and we ended the meal with a sampling of everyone's cookies! And then came Secret Santa!

Service Projects, Fund-Raising, and Cookie Sales

We planted flowers at the church, decorated the doors at a local nursing home for Christmas, and went caroling at another nursing home! | "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not." -Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

"A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand." -Unknown

Selling cookies was a big part of our Girl Scout years but, we didn't take a lot of pictures. We did sell an awful lot of cookies, though...sometimes even in the snow! Once, we got a gift of some Canadian Girl Guide cookies from a former troop member!

In addition to selling loads of cookies, we occasionally did something else to raise money for our planned cruise. On one occasion, we sold baked goods at the Raleigh St. Patrick's Day parade. Since the Girl Scout cookie sale was still going on, we had to sell under the guise of the Dicey Chicks and Chicklets, but we raised some additional funds and the girls got to ride on one of the parade floats!

Filling the bags! | Putting together around 225 sandwiches! | As a group, we decided to devote most of our final year to service projects. We devoted one Saturday morning to making and distributing Brown Bag lunches as part of the ministry of New Hope Lutheran Church. | "When a person is down in the world, an ounce of help is better than a pound of preaching." -Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton

On a different occasion, we made little dresses out of pillowcases to be donated to needy girls. | "Sewing mends the soul." - Author Unknown

Along with learning some new sewing skills at these meetings... | the girls also learned a little bit about cooking meals and table setting for a group. Hopefully, some of these skills will stand them in good stead in college! | "The most indispensable ingredient of all good home cooking: love, for those you are cooking for." -Sophia Loren

Father and Daughter Events and | Mother and Daughter Events

Our girls attended many Father-Daughter dances throughout the years but the only pictures are from the one that I organized and ran! | "A father is always making his baby into a little woman. And when she is a woman, he turns her back again." -Enid Bagnold

Ah, but the Mother-Daughter events were quite numerous and very well documented!! Sometimes we had tea parties; sometimes we had breakfast; once, we even had dinner. Sometimes we held our event at someone's home; sometimes we went to a tea room; sometimes we went to restaurants. But it really didn't matter where we went or what time of day. What mattered most was who we went with...mothers and daughters!

"Mother, the ribbons of your love are woven around my heart." -Author Unknown

"Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." -Elizabeth Stone

"Mom, when thoughts of you are in our hearts, we are never far from home." -Author Unknown

SPORTS | "Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game." -Michael Jordan | AND GAMES!

We participated in Girl Sport a couple of times. We had great fun trying out new sports and learning new skills. | Of course, some of us were a little more athletic than others. And some of us knew better than to even try and stayed safely on the sidelines taking pictures! | Girl Sport Day #1 | Girl Sport Day #2

One day, we went ice skating and got some "lessons" from Sarah and another skater in our group...sort of! Mostly, all we did was a lot of falling down! But it was so much fun! | I believe they had the most fun, though, when we took them rock-climbing! In fact, they enjoyed it so much that they did it again when we went on our cruise several years later! And there's nothing quite like rock-climbing on a moving ship in the middle of the ocean!

Raleigh Rock Yard | Monarch of the Seas

Day Trips | "We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open." -Jawaharial Nehru

"Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain." -Author Unknown | We enjoyed ourselves at Duke Dance Day...even though we were about the oldest troop in attendance.

We visited the Governor's Mansion at Christmas time one year. Also, we spent some time checking out a few of Raleigh's historic houses and cemeteries.

We played a Gingerbread Man Wide Game at Durant Nature Park and learned lots of new skills!

We did a lot with animals over the years. We visited the SPCA and we visited a kennel and got to play with the puppies being raised to be service dogs. We also got to watch some sheep shearing! | SPCA | Lazy 5 | Jagerstadt Kennels

We took an evening trip to the drive-in movies with our families and got a tour of the projection room. And one day, we had our own private fashion show at Limited Too at the mall!

We spent a day touring the Carnivore Preservation Trust learning all about rescued animals...mostly tigers. After a very entertaining walk and tour, we then proceeded on to Fearrington Village for a picnic lunch and...you guessed it! More animals!!

We had a great time eating our lunch on the grounds in the sunshine. Then, we went to see the oreo cookie cows and the fainting goats. Poor Rachel! No matter how hard she tried, those goats just wouldn't faint!!

We spent one day at the beach. | We started out with a fun visit to the Fort Fischer Aquarium. | After seeing the fish and taking loads of silly pictures, we proceeded on to the beach.

"I like animals. I like natural history. The travel bit is not the important bit. The travel bit is what you have to do in order to go and look at animals." -David Attenborough

We loved going there and introduced our little sister troop to it in our final year. | We went at night and in the daytime! | Help! Get us out of here! | The girls on the wooden tractor. | Moms and girls. | On the antique fire engine. | Our girls on the bus! | The girls of Troops 221 and 169, our little sister troop. | Ken's Korny Korn Maze!

 Overnights and Camp-Outs

We had several sleep-overs in the Troop Room at the Council Office over the years. In fact, we enjoyed our first Harry Potter-themed one so much that we did it again a few years later!

Another trip we took together was to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. The highlight was our rooftop tour! It was spectacular to walk on the roof of this wonderful house!

We couldn't have asked for more perfect weather for our rooftop tour. It was a gorgeous day! | That was good because, as I recall, the next day was chilly and rainy! But I've always been good at ordering up the right weather!

We also enjoyed going to Blue Jay Point. In fact, we went there a lot! | "Friendship is a bond pulled together by laughs, tears, sleepovers and should have been theres." -Unknown

"In the end it won't matter how many friends you have but how many really meant something to you." -Unknown

The Don Lee Center was terrific! We got to go fishing, dissected a squid, went on a hay ride, and all sorts of other fun and educational things we hadn't done before.

As a leader for many years, I think that going camping was almost our favorite thing. We enjoyed it so much that we kept doing it over and over at various different Girl Scout and public camp grounds. Some folks called us Troop Beverly Hills because we preferred cabin camping to roughing it but we didn't let that stop us. We continued having fun in the way we liked best! | CAMPING

Camp Mu Sha Ni | Jordan Lake

A favorite camp of many of us, we went to Camp Graham several times; sometimes to leader-daughter events...but most often as a troop! | Camp Graham

I tried and tried to teach them something but... | all they wanted to do was eat and play!

A couple of years ago, the North Carolina Girl Scouts bought three new camps. We chose to visit the property at Camp Hardee. The location was just beautiful...right on the Pamlico River. We stayed in cabins on this trip and really enjoyed ourselves.

Our cabins were warm and toasty but it was pretty chilly outside. After we cooked and ate our breakfast, we had a few little competitions. We tried to see who could get their food bags up into a tree first. We had a competition to see who was fastest at setting up a tent, and we played some type of acting game, the subject of which escapes me now. We also tried, once again, to learn how to use a compass. It was a great weekend!

The weather was beautiful for most of our time there. We really enjoyed the views from the lodge and having the camp all to ourselves this time. | It was fun to all sleep in the same room on the floor and we enjoyed working together to prepare our meals. | We played a few games and just relaxed and got ready for all our planned activities for Saturday. | For our final overnight trip ever, we went back to Camp Hardee!

We started our day with our favorite troop breakfast...omelets in a bag and biscuits! Yum! | Then we headed outside to enjoy the sunshine and take some pictures before the wet weather arrived. | Camp Hardee

Once the rain rolled in and it got chilly, we went inside and proceeded with our Harry Potter-themed murder mystery, followed by our chocolate frogs and butterbeer! | Allison pouring the butterbeer! | A toast! | Homemade butterbeer bottles!

Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, & Luna Lovegood | Luna Lovegood & Professor Slughorn | Luna Lovegood | Harry Potter | Professor Snape | Professor McGonagall | Cho Chang | Hermione and Rita Skeeter | Hagrid | Cedric Diggory & Ginny Weasley

After the rain stopped, we went outside and had a campfire! | We ate banana boats, dough boys, and s'mores! We ended by singing some Girl Scout songs!

It was a wonderful day and a great weekend! And the next morning, we saw dolphins in the Sound after breakfast. What a terrific final troop trip! | Once we'd had our fill of snacks, we went back inside for a mini spa complete with oatmeal masks! | The moms had a great time too!

But Homestead was absolutely the best one! Sleeping in those tree houses was great! Cooking on the grills and having an open fire was fun. But the activities we did for the low ropes course with the camp ranger were the best without a doubt! Except, of course, for poor Ms. Beth!

After all the activities, we were starving and more than ready for our food! After we filled our tummies, we found some time to do a Christmas service project also! | Homestead Camp

Some of our best times together through the years were shared with our families. Those particularly included the big trips that we took periodically until we aged out. We went somewhere together every couple of years and made so many special memories!

Our first really big trip was to Washington, DC for the 90th anniversary of Girl Scouts. We took our whole families up on a charter bus for the weekend celebration along with thousands of other Girl Scouts from all over the world! | Washington DC

I was so disappointed that I wasn't able to go on this trip at the last minute. But it appeared that everyone else had a wonderful time!

Our second big trip found us in Savannah, Georgia. As very young Juniors, the girls and their families visited the Birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low. This is the trip that most Girl Scouts dream of. We had four wonderful days and we all got our Birthplace pins, a pin you can only get by visiting her home! | Savannah, GA

The Birthplace Trip | We loved our lunch at Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House! We took a horse and carriage tour of the city. And we walked around on our own seeing churches and other landmarks.

One of our days was spent on Tybee Island. We visited the Marine Science Center, participated in a marine biology program on the beach, climbed to the top of the lighthouse, and then, we just played in the surf! | Tybee Island

But the highlight of the trip, for girls and families alike, was the dolphin cruise! We got to sail on the ocean for a couple of hours and watch the dolphins frolicking around the boat! Awesome!

Rachel and Emily weren't able to go on our original trip to Savannah and the Birthplace. | So, a few years later, Allison and I went back and took them and their moms along. | We did our best to recreate most of the activities from our original trip. | All four seemed to enjoy it and Allison and I had fun doing it all a second time!

"Two of the greatest gifts we can give our children are roots and wings." -Hodding Carter

Another adventure took us to Williamsburg, Virginia for a fun weekend at Busch Gardens!

We spent a very long day at the park but we had such a good time! | Busch Gardens

Next day, the adventure really began! | We started our trip by driving to Oviedo, Florida and spending the night! | And then came the long-awaited Mother-Daughter cruise!

After checking out our cabins and unloading some of our personal belongings, we paused to take a group photo and then we proceeded up to the highest deck to wave to the poor folks left behind on shore when we sailed! Oh, and we also had our first tropical drinks and did a little dancing on the deck!

The girls found another pool and made a couple of new friends right away. Then, they celebrated that night at dinner during the parade of waiters. | “Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.” -Dr. Seuss

Our first stop was at beautiful Coco Cay where we spent a fun day on the beach. We played in the water, sun-bathed, had a wonderful bar-b-que lunch, and the girls ended the day on the paddle boats. When we got back on the ship, it was formal night! | Coco Cay

The most beautiful group of women I've ever known...inside and out!

"Beauty...when you look into a woman's eyes and see what is in her heart." -Nate Dircks | Formal Night

On our stop in Nassau, we took a van tour. This was the fountain outside the Atlantis Hotel. | This was some gigantic chair inside the hotel. | We also had a short stop to see the Queen's Staircase. | Nassau, The Bahamas | Girl Scout Headquarters in The Bahamas! | And we were witness to the first ever tornado in Nassau! Scary!

We had a brief stop to take a look at the beach on Paradise Island, as well. After the tour, Allison, Alice, Rachel, and I had lunch at Senor' Frogs. Allison and Rachel loved the giant chairs outside the restaurant. The rest of the group hit the Hard Rock Cafe. | The girls with our tour bus and the driver. Allison and Samantha at Atlantis.

We enjoyed going to the shows in the evenings...especially the one with the hip-hop dancers! There was definitely no lack of things to do while we were sailing!

Our girls were asked to be in a photo with a young man at an adjoining table who was celebrating his birthday. And, our ship participated in a rescue at sea! Not many people can say that!

Well, girls, we are finally here. I don't know about you but I've been looking forward to this day and dreading it as well. Where has the time gone and how did you get so grown up? I can't believe our Girl Scout years together are coming to an end! I'm so happy for all of you and I'm so sad for all of us...moms and daughters. I want you to know how incredibly proud I am of each and every one of you and I want to thank you...so very much...for allowing me to share in at least a small part of your lives. I'm so excited to see what you all can become and how you will change the world, because I know that's what you will do. Each one of you has the power to make such a difference in so many lives. All your past and present leaders in Troop 221...Ms. Kim, Ms. Tina, Ms. Beth, and I...wish you the best of luck going forward. Enjoy your college years, be the best that you can be in your life, and never forget your Girl Scout days and your Girl Scout sisters! I hope that I have changed your lives at least a little bit for the better. I KNOW you have changed mine. Thanks for all the good times! I love you all very much! Ms. Rhonda | "Knowing you brings the blessing of sunshine and the joy of laughter to my life. I stop for a moment and smile and I am grateful for the countless ways I am touched by the gift of you in my life." -Unknown | The End!
