BC: T O R O N T O | Ely, MN

FC: The Burcarty Family Album ~ 2011 ~

January | We took our new camera for its first big test at Phipps. The color pull out feature is one of my favorites!

SEPIA VIVID EXTRA VIVID | Pittsburgh Zoo | It was so chilly but the cold weather provided some lively test subjects for our new camera features.

 PITTSBURGH GLASS CENTER: MAKE IT NOW WORKSHOP | Dave Born's Perspective (our instructor) | F E B R U A R Y

 M A R C H | Phipps | the Erie Zoo

Enjoying Grandma's Elephant | A P R I L | We had nice weather for our Easter weekend trip to the zoo

EASTER | happy | Spring Time

Mrs. Burton came for a weekend - so of course we visited the highlights (Phipps &the Zoo). We even made it to the Church Brew Works this round.

It's a beautiful day, don't let it get away. | Pittsburgh Zoo April 30, 2011

Phipps Summer Flower Show | MAY

 May 17 - 23

We drove from Erie to the Corning Glass Museum Wednesday, May 18th. The Museum had some neat exhibits and demos explaining fiber optics and talking about the different types of glass and how they break. We skipped Ithaca on the threat of rain and drove through to Utica.

Bald Mountain | Bubb Lake | Sis Lake | We spent Thursday in the Adirondacks hiking. We blazed a trail up (literally at points) Bald Mountain to the fire tower.

The Bald Mountain Fire Tower was originally erected in 1917. It was restored in 2004 to its current 35 ft. status.

Burton & I stopped in Queensbury on Friday to visit with his Grandmother before continuing on to Gloucester, MA. Saturday morning we walked to Rockport for the Motif 1 Festival. The festival was a bust but we had time for some group photo ops before whale watching in the afternoon.

 C O A S T | G U A R D | DRILL | a castle

After about 2 hours, we came across a fun bunch of dolphins. There was quite a large pack and you could see them swim underwater, and a few of them were jumping. They were a bit fast for photography though. | 7 Seas Whale Watching

The main whale sightings were a few different types of whales that looked remarkably similar to big dolphins (all you could really see was their dorsal fins). The fluke patterns in the water were neat to watch and we did see one humpback whale at the end of the day.

Saturday night we dined on seafood then drove back to Utica. Sunday was leisurely and we visited the Utica Zoo. Monday we drove back to Erie for a brief stop before heading back to Pittsburgh.

Friday, May 27th We met the Burtons at Velvet Ice Cream for a free 'factory tour' (a guide explaining the different ice cream & packaging machines we could see through a window). Of course | we had to try the ice cream and visit the store where we found our ice cream personalities. There was a mill and short nature trail as well. | detail oriented | empathetic

After spending Friday in Columbus, we set out to the Mohican State Park Saturday morning. We hiked most of the afternoon and enjoyed a rain-free night breaking in our tent.

The line for new inmates | The police entrance for the warden's arrest | the "cafeteria" | Warden's Office | Warden's safe - the bank wanted it back after filming! | The sewage pipe to freedom! | Fake prison gate in Air Force One | Front of Brooks' halfway house | Feeding the birds - the gazebo is where Brook's actual bench sat | The Shawshank tree - we slyly pulled over for a photo op | Mansfield prison cells | M a n s f i e l d | R e formatory | Sunday we did a driving tour of Shawshank sites. We visited the tree and cabin (but were spooked by people) near the state park, saw Mansfield filming sites, and met the McCartys at the Reformatory for a themed tour. | This room was actually in the prison

Jake's graduation party was June 11th at the Beagle Club. Gramma almost saw all her grandkids complete high school, but we laid her to rest on Friday, June 10th. | RITE | AID | J U N E

We were exercising our memberships - the zoo for Member's Night on June 14 and Phipps to see the Summer Show.

My Batman 'audition' this spring didn't result in much - the closest I came to filming was this Gotham City cab (Burton saw some batmobiles at the Mellon Institute). | Since we didn't hit it big at the casino in Erie over the weekend, we celebrated Burton's birthday with a bowling night. He even made it into the triple digits! | The West family came to visit over Labor Day. Gabe had fun at the Highland Park playground | and even got Uncle Burton to play catch with him. | S E P T E M B E R

September 7 - 9: Health Corps Orientation | Sept. 16: PARK(ing) Day Darija & I led a bike ride to see many of the parking sites. | Sept. 22 - 23: Health Corps Retreat at Camp Guyasuta. The 'low ropes' course was 'team building' games and the 'high ropes' course was a series of stations like a rock wall, rappelling site, and a zipline. We did a few training things, hiked a little, but mainly had a lot of free time doing nothing. | Nov. 11: AmeriCorps Meet & Greet with Congressman Doyle | AmeriCorps: Health Corp

Sept. 16-18th: Mrs. Burton and her friend Karen came to visit. We exhausted them Saturday with the the strip in the morning (I had to proctor), CMU & crepes on Craig Street for lunch, the zoo, and Station Square for the incline and dinner. | Pittsburgh Zoo | mastering heights | Sept. 24 & 25: We traded in our tires in Dayton at McCarty Inc. and went to a mini-festival at Carriage Hills.
