FC: A YEAR IN REVIEW

2: CHAPTER 10.7 CONCEPTS PARAMETRIC EQUATIONS: | If f and g are continuous functions of t on an interval I, then the set of ordered pairs (x,y) such that x=f(t) and y=g(t) is a plane curve (are composed of sets of ordered pairs (x,y), x and y are functions of a third variable t in the rectangular plane. The equations x=f(t) and y=g(t) are parametric equations for the curve. The variable t is the parameter. When writing the corresponding rectangular equation, eliminate the parameter.

3: CHAPTER 9 CONCEPTS: SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS AND MATRICES The concept that I learned from this chapter is how to key in the information in each matrix using the TI-83 graphing calculator. I have to key in each number and press enter each time. If I go back to check the information I have to make sure that I press enter again for each number in the matrix before I exit, if I want the information to remain in that matrix.

4: CHAPTER 4 CONCEPTS: Polynomial and Rational Functions I learned how to first make sure the function is in descending order, then how to identify the leading term, the leading coefficient, the degree of the polynomial, and name the function as a constant, linear, quadratic, cubic, or quartic(4.1). I learned how to do long and synthetic division using polynomial functions. I learned how to graph polynomial functions by practicing the six steps on page 315.

5: The concept of graphing/sketching a rational function is a fraction. There are five steps (p. 351). First, the function has to be set to equal 0 to find the domain and the vertical asymptotes. The solutions are not included in the domain but are included in the vertical asymptotes. Second, the horizontal asymptote or an oblique asymptote are found by comparing the degree of the numerator and the degree of the denominator. There cannot be both. Third, find the x-intercept by finding the zeros of the numerator. Fourth, the y-intercept is found by finding f(0) (substituting 0 for x throughout the equation. Fifth, use the vertical asymptotes (dashed line), horizontal asymptotes (dashed line), x- and y-intercepts and other values from the graphing calculator table to sketch the graph on graph paper.

6: CHAPTER 3 CONCEPTS: Quadratic Equations, Functions, Zeros, and Models Section 3.4 focus on clearing fractions by finding the LCD and making sure that to check the solutions to make sure that it does not make the denominator equal 0.

7: Chapter 2 Concepts: More On Functions The concept of testing the function to find out if it is even or odd. You have to test the function with f(x) = f(-x),substitute x for -x that is in the function, then f is even. It is odd, when -f(x) is compared with f(-x), f(-x) = -f(x).

8: CHAPTER 1 CONCEPTS: Graphs, Functions, and Models I learned how to write a slope-intercept equation for a line with, m = -3/8, pass through (5,6). I have to use the point-slope form: y -y one = m(x - x one), then you have the slope-intercept equation. Then you have to go to standard form: Ax + By = C, get rid of the fraction in the denominator, to get the equation of the line in standard form.

9: THE END This semester parts of chapter 1, 2, and 3, came together in chapter 4. From chapter 1, solving inequalities and writing intervals, finding the domains and the zeros of the function, we solve f(x)=0. The zeros are the x-intercepts. From chapter 2, the increasing, decreasing and piecewise functions, the algebra of functions and symmetry and transformations, and other concepts came to see me in chapter 4. From chapter 3, the complex numbers, quadratic equations, functions, zeros, and models, analyzing graphs of quadratic functions, solving rational equations and radical equations, solving equations and inequalities with absolute value, all came to see me in chapter 4 and I had to refer to those chapters. I am just realizing that working with rational means fraction. My learning style is I have to find something to associate to what I am working with.
