1: Dear Dad/Grandpa, A person of faithfulness, integrity and generosity - you are a model to which we all aspire. May you feel honored every time you read through these pages. 8: My Father Knows... How to make a sandwich into a work of art. He can push you on a swing and achieve the maximum swoosh. He knows how to pack a Volkswagen van for camping and utilize every square inch of space. He knows when to go strawberry, peach and apple picking and how to can tomatoes and peaches. He knows how to find the best possible item for the very lowest price, anywhere. He can get you to do your chores BEFORE you leave the house. He knows how to teach you to drive. Without yelling. And, when you are in an accident and dent his Dodge Dart, he picks you up at the crash site; the lecture isn't long... there is love in his voice. He knows how to make you smile, even when you are feeling grumpy. He is a pro at stringing lights on a Christmas tree. He knows how to make you feel useful by letting you shine his shoes with his shoe-shine kit and iron his hankies, which he then lets you use whenever the need arises. He picks up Ding How and lets you take a sample of his won ton soup. He lets you try a sip of his brandy alexander. He doesn't mind if you eat a few of his olives or pickled onions. He slips you a chocolate from his secret stash now and then. He treasures ice cream, but not as much as he treasures you. He makes sure there is room for everyone, renting the largest van on the lot when you come to visit. He teaches by example, quietly, day by day, year by year. He knows how to love us best by loving our mother, who, by the way, probably had something to do with all those skills. Thank you Dad, for loving me. Love Always, Laura Ellen the Watermelon
