Valerie Leftman is getting ready to start her senior year of high school. Normally, this would be an exciting time for any girl. However, Valerie is different. Five months ago, Valerie's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on the school cafeteria. He shot their classmates as revenge for the way him and Valerie were treated. Nick ended up shooting Valerie in the leg when she tried to stop him and then he ended his own life. Along with mental and physical pain, Valerie must also deal with the fact that many people in her school and community (including her own family members) think she knew what Nick was planning and that she was an assistant in the shooting. Valerie and Nick had a "Hate List" which was a notebook full of the names of the people they hated. It turns out that these same people were the targets of the shooting. In Hate List, Jennifer Brown reveals what happened on that fatal day in May and how everyone is dealing with the trauma. In this book, you follow Valerie hoping that she can overcome one of the worst things anyone could ever face. | Books | B

Climax | The climax of this book is on pages 81-83. These pages explain what happened, in detail, on May 22nd, 2008 in the Commons of Garvin High School. | C

Description of Main Characters | Nick- an outsider who didn't get along with others because his lifestyle is different from theirs. He was the boyfriend of Valerie Leftman and he got picked on by the same people as her. He shot the people on the list that went to Garvin High School. The only person that really knew him was Valerie. The way she acted around him was different. He read Shakespeare and he loved to have fun. | D | Dr. Hieler- a therapist who is working with Valerie and he mother after the incident. He is trying his best to help them to move on and he tries to get them to open up to him. At first he doesn't know if he can handle this situation but he tries his best and he does it. He has a wife and two kids. | Valerie- she enjoys drawing, she's a good student, and she is very quiet. She gets picked on a lot because she is different from everyone else. She is the girlfriend of Nick Levil and she contributed to the "Hate List" However, she didn't want anyone to die or get hurt because of it. She just saw the list as a way to vent her frustration.

E | Exposition | The exposition of this book is on pages 25-33. On these pages the author explains what is happening right before the shooting. SHe tells what Valerie and Nick along with all their friends are doing right before Nick walks in and opens fire on the Garvin High School cafeteria.

F | Figurative Language | -simile- page 9- "She opened the door and came in, looking all tentative like a baby deer or something." - metaphor- page 14- '"It'll be tough,' Dr. Hieler had warned. 'You're going to have to face a lot of dragons.'" - personification- page 15- "But that was back when summer stretched in front of us, impossibly long." -onomatopoeia- page 43- Kids were talking, squealing, shoes were scuffling on shiny tile, the walls echoing with the wham! wham! wham! of lockers slamming into the hallways beyond my eyes' reach." hyperbole- page 283- "I don't think so. I'm pretty much grounded for life."

G | Give an Alternate Ending | After the shooting, Valerie goes back to school and everyone accepts her. Everyone realizes that she is not at fault because she didn't shoot anybody. Most people consider her a hero because she stopped the shooting. Valerie and Jessica Campbell become best friends and get really close. Valerie's family stays together through everything.

EGG | H | Heart to Heart | Dear Nick, Hey! How are you?! I hope things are going well at school and with Valerie. I heard that you and Valerie were getting bullied at school and I'm very sorry about that. I'm writing this letter to give you some advice on how to deal with the people who mistreat you and your girlfriend. First of all, I heard about the "Hate List" that you and Valerie started. This isn't going to solve anything. I know that it started out as a way to vent frustration however, the list could turn out very badly. Instead of writing people's names down as a way to let out anger, instead take anger management classes. If you go to those, they will teach you how to manage your anger better. Another thing you could do is tell a trusted adult about what is going on. They will be able to help you deal with this bullying. They may talk to the kids that are harassing you or they may give you some ideas on how you can deal with the bullies on your own. Lastly, always remember that violence doesn't solve anything. Most of the time, violence makes the problem worse. It just makes people not like you or want to be around you. So just keep in mind that violence won't solve anything. I hope I helped a little bit and I hope things get better for you and Valerie. Sincerely, Michaela Grace Jarman

J | Justify why the book is a must read | Hate List is a must read for all teens for a few reasons. One is because of all the lessons you can learn from it. One lesson is to not assume you know someone because even your closest friend could be hiding something huge. Nick andValerie were dating and she still didn't know that he was going to open fire on the school. Another lesson is to take your anger out on things, not people. Nick took his anger out on the Hate List at first but that soon turned into something more. He started taking his anger out on people. He got to the point where he killed the ones who were mean to him. This book also shows what bullying can do to a person and how it can push them over the edge. This book was very interesting and once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down.

K | Know your book | 1. The Hate List almost began as a joke. How did it become so deadly? It became deadly when Nick started to hang out with Jeremy. Nick also has a problem with being too serious at times. Since he really hated those people, he felt like the couldn't deal with them anymore. He probably couldn't figure put how to deal with his anger so he had to do it in a harmful way. He also didn't tell anyone about his anger and hatred so it was just building up inside him. 2. Is it hard to tell the difference between a hero and a villain? In the first chapter Valerie wonders, "Was I the bad guy who set into motion the plan to mow down half my school, or the hero who sacrificed herself to end the killing?" How does she answer that? How would you? No because a hero helps everyone and a villain does the opposite. Valerie says she doesn't know. When Nick was shooting the kids that were on the list, Valerie was just kind of standing there at first but then she saved some kids and got shot herself. I would call her a hero because she was the reason the shooting stopped. 3. Why was Valerie so attached to Nick? Was she blind to his dark side? Did she draw out his good side? Why did she continue to love him after the shooting? What kept her from visiting his grave? Valerie was attached to Nick because he was always nice to her and they thought the same. She wasn't blind to his dark side but she didn't expect him to kill anyone. She still loved him after the shooting because he was always there for her. She didn't visit his grave because of people like the detective asking her questions about everything she did. | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | ?

K | Continued | 4.How supportive was Valerie's relationship with her mother before the shooting? How did it change afterward? In what ways did the tragedy bring them closer? Valerie and her mom had a good relationship before the incident. It changed when Valerie's mom found out that both Valerie and Nick had written names in the Hate List. Since then she had become over protective of Valerie. She doesn't want Valerie to get hurt. The tragedy drew them closer because Valerie's mom is worried about her. 5. Why was Jessica Campbell on the list? After the shooting, why does Jessica reach out to Valerie? Jessica was on the list because she was mean to Nick and Valerie before the shooting. Jessica reaches out to Valerie because Valerie sacrificed herself so Jessica wouldn't get shot. Nick ended up shooting Valerie instead of Jessica. 6. "My son may have been the shooter,"Nick's mother tells reporters, "but he's still a victim." What do you think she means by that? Nick shot all those kids because he was a victim of bullying. If those kids didn't bully him, he wouldn't have shot them. 7. After the shooting, Garvin High adopts a strict new security system. Do you think this is necessary? Yes because it made many kids feel safer. Some may have not even come back to school if they didn't put in new security so I think it's necessary. 8. Do you think Jessica cared about what others thought when she started hanging out wit Valerie? No, if she cared she wouldn't hang out with her. Jessica hung out with her because she wanted to. 9.Why did Nick and Valerie make the Hate List in the first place? AS a way to vent frustration and anger. It was kind of anger management. 10. If you had went to Garvin High and saw one of your friends shot and killed by Nick, what would you feel about Valerie coming back to school? I would try to forgive her even though it would be extremely hard. | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | ?

L | Lessons Learned | 1) Bullying can lead to deadly actions. 2. Violence doesn't solve anything.

Making Personal Connections | Valerie talks about how sometimes, she can't pinpoint how she feels. This happens to me a lot. Stacey (Valerie's friend) is one of those people who tries to please everyone and I am also like that. | M

This book is told from Valerie's point of view. This is effective because Valerie saw everything happen, she was a victim, and in a way, she was also part of the reason it happened. Valerie was with Nick when he opened fire on the students in the Commons. Nick shot Valerie in the leg when Valerie was trying to stop him from shooting anyone else. Valerie started the Hate List that Nick chose his targets from. | N | Narration

O | Obituary | Nicholas Anthony Levil, 16, of Garvin died May 22nd, 2008. Born in 1990, he attended Garvin High School. He is survived by his mother and father. He is the boyfriend of Valerie Leftman. Funeral services will be held at Garvin Funeral Home at 7:00 pm on May 26th, 2008.

P | Protagonist | Nick Valerie Dr. Hieler

Quotes | Q | " " | " " | " " | Page 141-142: "Just curled into a little ball and after my body stopped curling my soul just kept curling, curling, into something tight, wound, tiny." This shows how devastated Valerie was after she found out that Nick had shot himself. Page 280: '"My son may have been the shooter, but he's still a victim,' Levil's mother told reporters." I think this quote is important because it is definitely true, Nick was the shooter but he was also a victim of bullying.

R | Resolution | Pages 393-405 are the resolution. On these pages, the author explains what happens at the graduation ceremony of Valerie's senior year of high school. These pages tell about the memorial the Student Council members made for the victims on the shooting.

S | Sensory Details | One descriptive passage in this book is pages 81-83. These pages explain the entire shooting. It tells what exactly is going on. While reading these pages, you get a vivid image of who all got shot and how they are reacting. Also, you see who didn't get shot and how they are reacting.

Top 5 Song List | T | Song list for Nick | 1. Unwell by Matchbox Twenty All day Staring at the ceiling Making friends with shadows on my wall All night Hearing voices telling me That I should get some sleep because tomorrow might be good for something Hold on I'm feeling like I'm headed for a Breakdown I don't know why I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell I know, right now you can't tell But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see A different side of me I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired I know, right now you don't care But soon enough you're gonna think of me And how I used to be Me Talking to myself in public Dodging glances on the train I know I know they've all been talking 'bout me I can hear them whisper And it makes me think there must be something wrong With me Out of all the hours thinking Somehow I've lost my mind I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell I know, right now you can't tell But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see A different side of me I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired I know right now you don't care But soon enough you're gonna think of me And how I used to be I been talking in my sleep Pretty soon they'll come to get me Yeah, they're taking me away I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell I know, right now you can't tell But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see A different side of me I'm not crazy I'm just a little impaired I know, right now you don't care But soon enough you're gonna think of me And how I used to be Hey, how I used to be How I used to be, yeah Well I'm just a little unwell How I used to be How I used to be This is a song about people who claim to be not crazy even though they're suffering from various occurrences that could lead them to be labeled as such like Nick.

 2. Different Than You by The Exies I used to hate you, no reason why I was so angry, so full of pride Lost in opinions, and in you with those I knew everything that you didn't know And I used to think I would show I was right When I knew the truth from a lie I was so stupid when I was young I was so stupid to think that I was... So different, so different than you So different, so different than you I know that I said the truth So different; I'm no different than you Was I just jealous, bitter, and cold? Sins I could never... the lies that I told I have no respect for you, only myself A memory I'm not so fond of as well And I can honestly say I was wrong So can you forgive me so I can move on? I was so stupid when I was young I was so stupid to think that I was... We are one and the same Only with different names Some things I know are changing And I know this love I'm hating We are one and the same Your blood runs through my veins For **** I feel this failing I love the love I'm hating I was so stupid when I was young I was so stupid to think that I was... Different than you Different than you I know I said the truth So different; I'm no different than you. This song is about being different and Nick was different from everyone else. | T | Continued
