3: THE NEED TO FIND A LONG DISTANCE PHONE PLAN Monday, June 11th, 2001 After living in your phone this weekend, I know that our meeting on Saturday will go well –now the thing that is making my heart race a million miles an hour is thinking about how well it will/could/hopefully will go to be able to reach out and actually touch you, instead of just imagining you sitting at your computer reading this, or sitting on the floor for hours on the phone while we learn each other –what a luxury that will be! But the can all of this be happening to ME? I’m afraid I’ll get to Queen Street and discover that this has all been a dream and I will walk to the Japanese Paper Place alone –which used to be more than fine Thank you for making me feel precious and loved and confused and scared and sacred and hopeful and dreamy. Thank you for 11 years of history allowing me to trust you with my heart Enjoy your day...wouldn’t it be amazing if everyday started with emails like these? Let’s not forget this, OK?

4: June 6th, 2001 Dear Pam, I got the card you made me today. I couldn’t believe it got here so quickly. It’s the most beautiful card I’ve ever received. And that doesn’t begin to describe reading your words and following the delicate tracery of your writing. I decided to read it while sitting on the front steps, and the sun danced and glistened across the golden threads in the deckle. The Inuk of stone on the front gave me a big smile and I sat there for an hour, remembering my first year teaching up north, mingled with your letters back then, the image of the stone as a guide and marker for travelers, and reading and re-reading, all against the brilliant sun and a universe of batik. The beads reminded me of finding glass on the beach, once sharp, now frosted and smooth. I sat for along while, enjoying the warmth surrounding me in the sun beating down on me, and from your thoughts. love, Wally

5: Tuesday, September 11th, 2001 So...Mr. Koekebakker, will you marry me on August 24th, 2002? Will you be my soulmate and kindred spirit and best friend for the rest of our lives? Will you greet me with my garland of daisies and my rainbow of ribbons and take my hand and my heart and my love for you? Will you vow to love me forever in front of our family and friends as we stand barefoot on Curve Lake soil? Will you dance with me for the rest of my life? Will you create invitations to our day of commitment and joy with me, wrapping them in our love? We have a date!!! Mark August 24th on your calendar! I want to hold your hand on that day and wrap your finger in gold and remind you that I will be with you forever and ever.

8: NAMING CATS The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter, It isn't just one of your holiday games; You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES. First of all, there's the name that the family use daily, Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James, Such as Victor or Jonathan, or George or Bill Bailey - All of them sensible everyday names. There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter, Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames: Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter - But all of them sensible everyday names. But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular, A name that's peculiar, and more dignified, Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular, Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride? Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum, Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat, Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum - Names that never belong to more than one cat. But above and beyond there's still one name left over, And that is the name that you never will guess; The name that no human research can discover - But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess. When you notice a cat in profound meditation, The reason, I tell you, is always the same: His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name: His ineffable effable Effanineffable Deep and inscrutable singular Name. TS Elliot
