S: Nan Russell's 80th Birthday Celebration

FC: Happy 80th Birthday Nan Kathryn Brockbank Russell

On the 6th Day of April 2012, the 80th birthday of Nan Kathryn Brockbank Russell, we dedicate this book to a very special woman in our lives. She is a daughter of God, and an earthly daughter of Merrill & Ruby Brockbank, A loving sister of Marilyn, Ann & Steve. A caring mother of four blessed children; Debbie, Robyn, Brent and David. A grandmother of 15 grand children, and a great-grandmother of 21. Last but not least an eternal mate and best friend of J. Earl Russell, Jr. We dedicate this book of memories, thoughts, pictures and love to this very elect woman in our lives.

I Nan, being born of Goodly Parents... | Born April 6th 1932

 Nan Brockbank

 Growing up years...

 I Married My Best Friend!

 March 26th, 1953

 My Family

" | "A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take." ~Cardinal Mermillod

Earl | To my Sweetheart and Eternal Companion Nan, This is a special time of your life to reach the age of 80 and to have been married for 59 years. We have certainly been blessed by our Heavenly Father. It is not a common thing to have a couple to have lived so long and to have the blessings of having four wonderful children. They have set a wonderful example, and as the grandchildren and great grandchildren have come into our lives it has generated additional blessings to all of our lives. The last two weeks I have spend some time going through many pictures of our family, their activities, their schooling, their sports and church callings. Princeton Avenue will always be thought of as a wonderful neighborhood where we were surrounded with great friends, some of which we still see on a regular basis. The following adjectives describe Nan: Delightful, Pleasant, Industrious, Congenial, Likable, Charming, Agreeable, and Angelic. She had many friends in Bonneville Ward, and has many friends in her current Ward. She has had many church assignments, which have increased her knowledge of the gospel and has she has shared her love and spiritual input back to others.

Nan was a devoted and dedicated mother to our four children. She was a good cook, provided good meals, on a limited budget. She kept a clean house and the children's needs were always cared for by their mother. These were difficult times, with a limited income which put additional stress on the family, but we had many wonderful experiences, for they were fun times. Attending to Church duties were important to Nan and she was very supportive of the callings I and the children had as well. Having prayer in a spiritual home was very important to Nan. She was a wonderful young mother. Nan had a big impact on the children's growing up years. Raising teenagers were a challenge to us, but the children all responded to our requests and following the council of the church leaders. During the years, I have accumulated many pictures, letters and comments from many of her friends expressing their love and gratitude for their association with Nan. A comment from Mary Winters: “wonderful, wonderful Nan. I met so many great people during our years at Bonneville ward, but none better then you. It seemed like a very sweet bond started immediately which grew and deepened. Thank you sincerely for all that you have added to my life“. A quote from Sister Worthlin’s daughter after giving you a hug last week at a funeral, “my mother loved you“. Another quote from a friend: “Dear Nan, I can't begin to express how much I appreciate you. You are not only the perfect wife, mother and grandmother, but a perfect person in everything that you do. You have not only been an important example to me, but in the time that I have known you, I have learned a great deal from you. I admire your strength and the understanding that you have in your relationship with your children” During my 30 years working at ZCMI, you were involved in many activities (trips, tours, etc). I received many letters from people who expressed their thanks to you for the support you have given them. The past four months I have enjoyed a wonderful experience in reading and studying together the Book of Mormon with you. I know without a question that God Lives, and I testify to you that this is his work. Last year you sent me a note on Fathers Day quoting some thoughts from you and others, I would like to share them back with you. “There aren't enough words to tell you, not enough ways to show you I care, not enough laughter and good times to wish you, not enough moments to share. We can be thankful that we not only have this life together, but eternity together. How grateful I am to have a wonderful wife to share these things with. I love you. Earl

 Debra Lynne January 3, 1954

Dear Mom It's hard to express the feelings I have on this your special 80th birthday. I have reflected recently upon your life and the great example you have been to me and your children. You often ask why we all turned out so good. I think all you need to do is look in the mirror and you will have your answer. It is a direct reflection upon your testimony and simple faith. You led by example and we watched and we imitated. The Lord was always the center of your life and so it became our center. The love in your marriage is unique and is truly a oneness with God. He has blessed your because of that obedience to your covenants. We once again watched and we imitated so that our marriages would be equally as wonderful. I wish that you could look in the mirror and see the beautiful elect lady we all see. You are our connector, advocate, and loving mother who has given your life for us and raised us up to stand on righteous mountains. For this I thank you, for this I love you, for this I am grateful. I love You Debbie | "We Laugh, We Cry We Make Time Fly Best Friends we are, My Mom & I"

Dear Nan, On this your 80th birthday, I want you to know how much I love and appreciate you! You are a loving nurturing elect lady who has served valiantly as the matriarch of a great family. Thank you for raising your children to honor their sacred covenants and to be such shinning examples to all in their loving manner. This without question is a result of the wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother you are. Your legacy is a great one and I will be forever grateful for all you have done to make my eternal spouse one who has truly followed in your footsteps. Love, Paul | Paul

 Travis & Sharese

Grandma Russell, We have so many great memories with you. Burnt almond fudge ice cream, trips to ZCMI, the toys in your basement, birdhouses, $2 dollar bills, yummy meals in your kitchen, all the pictures hung proudly on your fridge, your visits to see us, and most of all.....your kindness and love to our family. Thank you for always making us feel loved and important. We hope you have a wonderful birthday! Love, Travis, Sharese, Jordan, Emma, Halle, and Eli

"As children, we can't comprehend or fully realize the meaning of a grandmother's love. How wise she is, how much patience she has, or how much guidance she gives us by her example and by her helpful caring ways. Years go by before we know and understand the depth of her concern and the love in her protectiveness. But as we mature we do finally understand and we can look back and see through older eyes and wiser hearts her unconditional love, devotion, and family loyalty. It's these and many other things that make us realize how lucky we have been and how lucky we are to have this amazing woman - our grandmother - as the centered root of strength and love in our life." | Tricia

My Dear Grandmother, There is so much to celebrate on your special day... your kindness, your loveliness, your uniqueness and a celebration of your life! My heart is filled with so much love for you.

Happy 80th Birthday to our beautiful Grandmother! We Love You, Bill, Tricia, Gavin, Abigail, Brandon, & Olivia Pitts

Our Grandma never runs out of hugs or cookies...or ice cream!

Grandma, You are an amazing woman who has taught me so many wonderful things. I am blessed to call you grandma. I will always cherish the time I was able to spend with you while living in Utah. You were there for me and picked me up during some of the most difficult times of my life. I admire your compassion, beauty and unconditional love for others. As I watched you care for your mother I was amazed at the patience you had. You are so Christlike in your actions, always showing compassion. Thanks for being a great example to our family. We love you! Love, Tracy | Happy 80th Birthday Grandma!

"Grandmothers are voices of the past and role models of the present."

Happy 80th Birthday GG Russell! We love you! Love, Nicholas, Ethan and Taylor

Tiffany & Michael | Grandma, Happy 80th Birthday to an amazing women who we love and respect. I love you so much! Have a wonderful birthday Grandma. Love, Tiffany | "Grandma, because of you, I have memories to last a lifetime" | Isabelle, Katelyn and Jacob

Tyler & Sarah | Grandma, Happy 80th! What a wonderful life you have lead! It has been such a joy to live so close to you these past few years! We have truly cherished that time we've been able to spend with you. Thank you for your continuous example of being a righteous and loving mother and grandmother. | We love you! Tyler, Sarah and Ashley

Robyn & Rick | Mom....Happy 80th Birthday... You have been a great example to me in so many ways. I know that you have always believed that all the talents skipped you by. But I truly believe that Heavenly Father gave you many "gifts of the spirit", and that you have been blessed with a compassionate heart, one that is sensitive to the needs of others, with an ability to love other people, to strike up conversation and to be interested in others. I put this picture of you and Lorna Beth on my page, because to me it describes your friendliness. Every time you come to Denver, there are many that crowd around you, and you in turn are so gracious to them and make them feel important. You always treated my friends in the same way. You cared for your mother when she couldn't take care of her needs, and did it knowing that you wouldn't always receive from her those words you needed to hear. You haven't missed many events in the Balli family. You have come to care for each new child that was born, each baptism, wedding and important event. Being here for Tyler's ballgames was so fun. You never miss a birthday, and your love is truly felt from all of us. To me, these are Christlike qualities that we all seek to have. I love you, and honor you... Robyn

j | C | c | Congratulations Nan on 80 wonderful years! This is a marvelous time to celebrate your life and to express our love and gratitude. I appreciate all you have done for me and our family; you have blessed us in many ways. You have been a great example of a true disciple of our Savior. Your testimony has always been evident by your obedience, your service and your loving attitude towards others. One of your talents is to love others and offer supportive, kind words that help lift and encourage; I know that lives have been blessed because of your efforts. Your relationship to Earl has been another example of your genuine goodness, positive nature and your understanding of the role of the family. That example will certainly be one of the elements of your legacy that will be discussed, admired and emulated by your family. I appreciate the many kindnesses and love you have shown to me; you have always made me feel like a son. May the Lord bless you that you will know of His love and that your life has made a wonderful difference to so many. Much love, Rick

Megan and Aaron Josh, Jake & Brandon | HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDMA "R" We are so blessed to celebrate 80 wonderful years of your life! Grandma- you are a huge blessing in my life and I am so grateful to know my grandmother so well. We have lived far for most of my life, yet we have remained very close. I know this is because of all your efforts to be apart of my life and now the life of my children. You are a wonderful person with many abilities and talents. You have the gift of compassion. You feel deeply for others, and your concern and love has blessed me. These last few months were difficult ones for me, and your phone calls lifted my spirits when I was ill and feeling very low. I was amazed at your love and how deeply you would take on the challenges that were not your own. I know you prayed for me and I felt that. You also taught me some incredible lessons as your shared your own experiences of difficulty with me. You spoke of the lesson you learned from Sister Wirthin when you were sick and didn't feel like you could continue on- she had told you she would carry your load. I was so touched by that story and am grateful you were there for me to help carry my burdens. I have such incredible memories with you through out my whole life and our visits to Utah. I have always loved being in your home and you work so hard to make people feel comfortable and welcome. What a blessing and joy it is for my children to now experience those wonderful times as well. They LOVE coming to see you! They LOVE feeding the ducks with you. They LOVE getting to chat on the phone with you. They LOVE the cards and 2$ bills that come on special occasions! They LOVE you. You have many to love, yet are able to make each one feel so special! I love you so much and hope that you see the blessings of your hard work and sacrifice through the lives of your family. You have a strong testimony of the gospel that has created a strong link through out our family. Thanks for your love. I truly hope you can celebrate on this birthday... knowing how many people you have blessed in your life. Have a wonderful birthday! Love Megan

I have so much | Tyler | I have so much to thank you for. You have always remembered my birthday and other import events in my life. You have been there for us as much as you could , even though it's a long way to Colorado. You have always made me feel loved and I cherish all the memories of driving to Utah to be with you. Thank you for passing down one of the greatest traditions, our family has known.... ICE CREAM. I feel blessed to be in Utah this past year to be able to spend a little more time with you. Happy 80th. Love Tyler

Grandma &Heather | Happy 80th Birthday. You are a wonderful grandma and I am so grateful for the influence you have had in my life. I feel blessed for the past 10 years to have lived close to you and I will always cherish our scrabble games, sleepovers, golf matches, St George visits, Words with Friends matches, yummy dinners and long chats. You home has always been a refuge of safety and love. Many times I have left your house, feeling less burdened, more loved and capable. I appreciate your wanting to be so much a part of my life. You have not only been an incredible grandma but a loving, caring friend. Your testimony of the gospel and your love for grandpa has been a beacon of light for the whole family. I am better because of your influence and love. Can't wait for many more memories!! Heather H

Ryan, Ashleigh and Sofia | Happy 80th! We are grateful for all your love and support through the years. Thank you for your example of faith and love for the Lord. Your testimony has strengthened ours and we can't think of a greater legacy to leave your posterity than this. We are sorry we can't be there for your celebration. We'll be thinking about you. Love, Ryan, Ashleigh and Sofia

Russell, Megan and Austin | One of my favorite memories of Grandma Russell is when she was visiting in Denver. Though I didn't have the pleasure myself of being grandma's hairdresser for the day, I had a front row seat as my sisters had free range on grandma's flowing locks. I don't remember ever hearing grandma laugh so hard, as well as my sisters as they tried various hairstyles. (both trendy and traditional) It was one of the fun moments where you got to see grandma literally "let her hair down" Happy birthday grandma, I love you Russell

Mom, As I look back over the years, it brings back a lot of memories of the times we have spent with you and dad. Our family has always been close as a result of having the gospel in our life. Both you and dad have taught us well in following the principles which will make us happy. As I reflect back on our family, it brings to life some wonderful times we have spent together. The many vacations to California, the 4th of July celebrations, spending time in Heber at Swiss Oaks, and the times we spend celebrating birthdays, weddings, and special occasions. These are all memories I will always have. You have always been very supportive of the decisions I have made, and you have always been there for me and my family during both good and tough times. | Brent

“God couldn't be everywhere, so he created mothers" | We honor you this day as we celebrate your 80th Birthday. I want you to know of the love I have for you and I want to thank you for the example you have been to all of us. We have been truly blessed as a family to have you in our life's. Love Brent

 Vicki

Dear Nan, Happy 80th Birthday! I love you and I am so grateful to have two amazing Mother's in my life. Since I had only been a member of the church for a little over a year when Brent and I were married, I turned to you to show me the way. I watched how you were so diligent in your church service, attended the temple on a monthly basis and delighted in reading your scriptures. I learned so much from you and I couldn't have asked for a better person to emulate. Nan you are a great help and support! You and Earl have always been there during the many trials Brent and I have had to face. I know it wasn't easy to have Steven and I move into your home so you could take care of Steven while I was forced to lay in bed, while pregnant with Jason. Taking care of a three year old and fixing diabetic meals had to be hard but you never made me feel as if I was a burden. I will also never forget the time while our family was on a cruise Jason's health had taken a turn for the worse. His Ulcerative Colitis had put his health in critical condition and I was able to get on an earlier flight to get him home. You and Earl had dropped everything to go to the airport and wait for our flight to arrive. You were there to take us immediately to the hospital and then stayed by my side until Brent could get home. With Janessa, you both helped Brent and I, in so many ways, deal with all the ups and downs that came with having a pre-mature baby. Through all these trials your spiritual strength was the anchor we needed. I have also loved the many fun trips we have taken through the years and especially the few we have taken the last couple of years. The trip to Jackson Hole in the Fall was spectacular. I also loved going to Bryce Canyon and reminiscing with Earl. Playing hearts at night while looking at the beautiful canyons and laughing at the hotel Brent picked that was behind the Pizza Restaurant. I believe you already know how much i love spending time with you and Earl./ One of the greatest blessings to occur in my life was when my parents were baptized. We all know what a tremendous influence you both had on helping my parents move towards baptism. Brent and I continue to be so grateful for knowing that both sets of parents truly love each other and consider themselves best friends. That in itself has blessed our family in so many ways. I love you Nan and I hope this 80th Birthday is a special one for you. Love Vicki

 Steven & Jami

Grandma, The first thought that comes to my mind when I hear the name Grandma Russell is "The Ultimate Family Person". You are the one responsible for insuring the family has stayed so close even though we are spread so far apart. Often times in conversation with friends about family, I am told that I am so blessed to have such a great family and this in large part is thanks to you and Grandpa. Grandma, I wish I could fully express how much impact you have had on my life. I am ever so grateful for your testimony, especially as you have been able to share it with my other Grandparents, helping them to feel of the spirit and gain a testimony of the gospel (not to often do you have two sets of Grandparents that are best friends). I am also especially grateful for your example and the life that you have lived. Happy 80th Birthday Grandma! I love you so much, Steve PS: Jami is glad she was able to make it back up on the fridge | I always laugh when I see this picture so I had to put it in!!!

 Jason

Grandma There is nothing I cherish more than to be able to spend time with my family. You have always been there for your grandkids and even though we are spread across the country, you have made it to important moments in our lives. I realize that it has been a great blessing to of lived so close to you for my entire life; being able to have Sunday dinners on a regular basis, spending the holidays with you and Grandpa, and of course spending time with you in St. George. During some of my most difficult struggles; you have been by my side giving me the hope, love, and empathy that only a Grandmother could give. Even when I was diagnosed with my illness and with the many doctor and hospital visits that followed; you were always right there by my bedside, or a phone call away checking up on me. I will forever be grateful for that. I have grown to appreciate and revere the kind of woman and Grandmother you are. Your love of the Gospel, strong testimony, and most of all your Christ-like example has literally influenced generations. I know that each of your grandchildren and great-grandchildren will look at the life you have lived and the qualities you possess and will want to emulate those same traits. Even though I am not married at this time, I see certain strengths in you that I want to see in my wife someday. I see the relationship that you have with my other grandparents, and I must admit that it is rare to see you as best of friends. But I admire that greatly, and I would like to see that same relationship with my parents and my future ‘In-Laws’. I hope you have an amazing 80th Birthday Grandma, know that we love you so much and that you truly are a remarkable Grandmother! Love Jason

 Janessa

Grandma, Happy 80th Birthday! I am so blessed that our birthdays are one day apart, because it means that I have been able to share each and every birthday with you! As I reflect back over the years, many memories came to my mind. Ever since I was a little girl I loved going to your house. We would always play board games and have an absolute blast playing catch phrase! Sleepovers were the absolute best because I was able to spend the night with you, Grandpa and Kaylee. There has been so many different memories that we have shared together like going to the zoo, spending time together in St. George, as well as family fun at each other's house's. Grandma you have been such an amazing example to me of a righteous woman. I have never met someone with so much care and love as you! You have constantly shown your love for me, for which I can't thank you enough. Thank you so much for being such an amazing example to me! I wouldn't want to be birthday buddies with anyone else! Happy Birthday again! I love you with all of my heart! -Janessa

David | My Mother is M is for Magnificent O is for one of a Kind T is for Truthful H is for Helpful E is for Endearing R is for Really Loving

Mother I hope that you have a wonderful 80th Birthday! You are the best example a what a Mother should be! You are wonderful and a very caring Mother and have taught me many great things in this life. While I was in my youth, as you may remember, I did not have many friends growing up in my earlier years of life, and you and Dad were my best friends. I remember spending many nights talking with you with the troubles that I was having with life, and you were always there for me. You were always able to make me feel better and believed in me and encouraged me to be the best that I could be. I have always felt your love and the great concern that you that had for me. I believe one of your greatest talents is your ability to be able to listen. You and Dad are a great exemplar of what one should be. You have great love for your family and especially our Savior. I will always cherish all of the wonderful and memorable trips that we have been on together to England, Scotland, Switzerland, Hawaii and our Cruise to Alaska. These will always be precious memories that I will never forget! It has been great living back here in Utah during the last 11 years where your grandchildren Kaylee and Kayden can be close to you. They always enjoy going to Grandma & Grandpa's House and being around you and Dad. I always look froward to our daily phone calls, and playing Words with Friends with you. I want you to know how much I love you for appreciate all that you do for me and our family. Happy Birthday Mother! | Love, David

 Barbara

Dear Nan I feel incredibly blessed to have a mother-in-law who has shown me so much love. I know there are times that you have shown me more love than I deserve. I remember the first time we met, I was so nervous and you instantly made me feel comfortable, and welcomed me to the family with open arms. Thank you for being such a wonderful mother-in-law to me. I want you to know how much I appreciate all of the love and support you have extended to me over the years. You are a very special woman, and a valued friend. I'm very grateful for you raising a wonderful son, in a loving home, in the gospel of Jesus Christ and in helping him to honor his priesthood. It is with that love that David is the person who he is today. Thank you for being there for him, helping him learn to be a loving, son, father, and husband. I hope you have a wonderful 80th Birthday! Love, Barbara

 Kaylee

Grandma, Happy 80th Birthday! You are such an amazing and wonderful woman, and I am proud to call you my grandma. You are always so loving, and caring about others and their needs. You also are always there, ready to help, and supportive to everyone. You an such an example to me with your sweet, and loving personality. You have always been there for me, even from when I was in Georgia, you would make an effort to come out and visit, and on our trips to Utah, you would make us feel so at home. I can remember those nights when Janessa and I were little and would sleep over. You always made sure that we were both happy. In the morning, before everyone was up, you would start making breakfast just so we could wake up to the smell of french toast cooking. That meant so much to me, knowing that you would do that for us! Now I love to come over and know that I can always play games with you, and have a fun time! All the little moments that you would take me out, or go somewhere with me, will forever stay in my mind. I appreciate everything that you have done for me. I hope that your birthday is full of love, and laughter, and that you have an amazing day. You deserve every second of it! I love you so much Grandma! Love Always, Kaylee
