Dear Mom, You have shaped my life in every way. You have set the example of what a mother and woman should be like: Giving, caring, loving and forgiving. You have lived your life serving others, in a way that is extraordinary and special. As a gift to you this Christmas, I want you to read the letters and words from people who have had the privilege of experiencing your kindness as a mother. Let this be a constant reminder to you about how much you mean to not only me, but to so many people who have been blessed to have you in their lives. LOVE YOU! -Romika

A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts ~ Washington Irving

Mom, When I was young I always wanted to be like you. I still do. I don’t know how I got so lucky to have you as my mom; I have truly been blessed by your beauty, love and nurturing. You have been my mother, my best friend, my role model, my everything. You have taught me the most important things in life like generosity, love, compassion and kindness. Because of you I have an extraordinary life, I have endless opportunities and I strive to be a better person. You have been a superhero mom, not only to me, Romi and Ashi, but you’ve unselfishly given your heart, love and patience to so many people throughout the years. I wish my words could describe how incredible you are but the truth is, it could never sum up everything that you are; there is no description to describe how amazing you are. Words cannot describe how I feel about you and your love. All I can say is that I love you and I am so grateful that you are my mom! The one thing that I really want you to know is that you have given me the best life, there is not one moment I would change. My whole life has been filled with so much love and laughter because of you. I want to thank you for everything that you do, thank you for everything that you are and more than anything, thank you for your unconditional love! With love and gratitude, Sarika

"There is no friendship, no love, like that of a mother for her child." | Dear Mom (Uhmma), I just wanted to let you know that I love you lots. You have always taught us to be kind and to treat everyone with care. Also, you have never failed to show your unconditional love towards everyone...and that is something I really admire about you. I appreciate everything you do for me, like driving me back and forth from school and work when you don't have to. You always make sure I'm home safe, and always take care of me. You are a great mother and I love the fact I can talk to you about anything, and that I can always trust you. I will always remember all the good memories we have shared, like all the family trips we have gone to every summer when we were younger. Those road trips were so much fun! We all shared many great memories of family fun, like at the beaches catching baby crabs, and listening and singing to songs on our drive back and forth to our destinations. Thank you for being such a loving, fun, and wonderful mother, and most importantly... thank you for always being there for us all. <3 I love you very much! From, Ashika

 Beautiful

Sarla, Not too many people have a best friend in their life, but I am lucky to say that I have you. A friend like you is someone I can rely on anytime - day or night. You have always been there for me and I cherish every moment that we spend together. I want you to know that I am here for you no matter what. When I moved out, you came to see me and the girls with a cantaloupe and box of cookies. You might’ve thought that was just a small gesture but I will never forget that. Your kindness and thoughtfulness go a long way. Thank-you for being you! Love from your best friend and casino buddy, -Christine.

Aunty Sarla, If there’s one word to describe you, Aunty Sarla, it is unselfish. You always put everyone else before you. You make it your duty to ensure that everybody around you is taken care of and that usually means you never leave time to take care of yourself. Even though you are retired, you are always on the go and still a full-time workaholic. Make sure to enjoy some “me” time because you deserve it! Thank you for always making us feel welcome in your home. Your place is somewhere we know we can go to hang out anytime or watch Prison Break and American Idol together. You are not only our mom’s best friend, but also a second mom to us. Everytime our mom answers the phone and starts giggling non-stop, we know it’s you on the other end. We admire your big heart, generosity, good humour and great cooking skills (you make the best roti and idli). With that being said, we appreciate ALL you do. You are truly a superhero!! Lots of love, Shireen and Kavita.

Daughters are little girls that grow up to be your best friend...

I love my mother as the trees love water and sunshine- she helps me grow, prosper, and reach great heights. ~ Terri Guillemets

Dear Sarla (my mom for 6 months): I'm so happy to be a part of this surprise, it's a way to show you that I still remember how good you were to me and I'm thankful for all the things you did for me! The little things like helping me out with English words I didn't understand, or huge things like opening your house and family to me! Those six months under your care were amazing! And I got really fat by the way... Haha! I loved your food. Even the simple things like grilled cheese sandwiches taste better when you make them! Also, I really hope to come back to Vancouver one day so we can go to many more Hindu parties together. :) You know I loved going to them with you. If truth be told... I really miss you, and I mean it! You're such a wonderful person! Love you so much Sarla! Merry Christmas! :) -Salma

Sarla Nair, When I think of Sarla Nair, I see and know a beautiful woman. She's not only a woman, but a wife, mother, friend, aunt, and daughter. I am so fortunate to know this wonderful person. She inspires me to be the best mother I could possibly be. When I think of the word "mother", Sarla is the true definition of what mothers strive to be: loving, understanding, forgiving, and most of all... patient. Sarla raised 3 beautiful girls that became women. If I could use her attributes to raise my children with unconditional love as she did, my children will become men with dignity, love and respect. Sarla Nair is, and always will be, an inspiring woman to all those that get the pleasure to know her and feel the love she gives always. My children are so lucky to know and feel her love. We love you so much Sarla. From, Angella, Mike, Michael and Mitchell

Sarla, It was a great pleasure to meet you in Vancouver. I cannot believe that it has been already 9 years since I was there. But I still remember the nice time I had while I stayed with you. I had a wonderful time with you and your family there by spending time together and talking with each other :) You gave me a lot of precious moments and memories as my great host mother! It was a very important for me to know your culture and see how the local people live life, and this experience was really special to me. I can say that this experience brought me a new view which made me go to the UK and study again and work there :) I do really appreciate having met you and everything you gave me at that time. I wish you all the best and health and happiness :) Thinking of you from Japan. Take care. Lots of love, Akiko

Sarla Aunty | To Sarla aunty, You have been like a second mom to me. As we all know, I was a troubled youth, so much in fact that I was kicked out of my house and lived with you guys for a while. During that time you really made me feel at home and welcomed. In a time where my life was pretty much crashing down on me, you took me in and helped me change my life around. Although I would still give you a hard time, I think if it wasn't for living with you guys, and the love and comfort shown to me by not only you, but your whole family... well, I'm not sure I would have ever realized I was going down a bad path in life and probably would have continued down that path when I was hard headed and wouldn't let anyone help me. You stepped up and helped me out and made me realize what was important in life, and eventually helped me and mom to talk again. You have always been very supportive of me, regardless of the trouble I've caused myself and others in my life. You will always hold a special place in my heart as my second mother. -Josh Singh

Sarla, (or as I've been known to say... "my brown mom") You are a kind, caring, beautiful, amazing mother and friend. You have raised 3 of the most amazing girls I know and they are a true reflection of you. Thank you for always letting me be a part of your family. I have always felt welcomed and included and no matter how much time has passed I know that I am welcomed with love into your home. So a couple things I also need to thank you for.... Thank you for, not only being a mom to your own children but being a mom to their friends, for the rides and the cooking, the laughs and the hugs and just for being you. You have a smile and laugh that can cheer up even the darkest day, you have a comforting and loving soul and I am blessed to have you as a part of my life. You are the kind of mom I aspire to be. I hope you know just how much you're appreciated and loved. Lots of Love, Suzanne ..

We love you "Nani" -From, Jackson & Lulu

"A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take." - Cardinal Mermillod

 Me & Mom

Sarla- I would love to thank you for all your love that you gave to me throughout High School. Thank you so much for driving and picking us to from school all the time. Thank you for always making me feel welcome in your home and letting me come over. Thank you for feeding me whenever I came over (my favorite is your wonderful duck curry!) Thank you for loving me like I was your own daughter! -Anita Hepting

I just want to take this time to say that Mama Nair is a great woman, and I'm very grateful for all the things she has done for me when I was in need of a mother's love. She welcomed me into her home for few months, but at the same time, it felt like a lifetime 'cause you treated me just like one of your girls. Even when I left Vancouver, I still felt the love each time that I came to visit with my son. I will never forget you and your family. You will always be with me. OHHHH how can I forget all the great food you have cooked! You always had told me to try all the different food, even when I didn't know what it was. I still tried it because of you, and now I love to try new food (some of the food that you used to make for me up to this day I still eat when I go to Indian restaurants.!) At the end of the day, no words can tell you how much I loved every minute I was around you and your family. ......LOVE Chafay T.... Muahhhhh big HUGS

Hi, Sarla. How are you?? I'm good. So, I couldn't stay for many days in Vancouver, but I have many good memories from that time. Before I came to Canada, I was worried and anxious about everything because I had no friends there. The school agent said I should do a homestay. So, a few days before I left Japan, I decided to do it. When you sent your family photo, I was glad to have it. I only stayed one week, and I got lost in some stations and near your home. I could talk to your daughters and to you to help me. I have maaaaaaaaaany memories from my time in Vancouver, like when Jackson would always bite my hands. I enjoyed my stay with you. I feel more confident now to make friends and go to new places. Anyway, I was so glad to meet you and your family!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss you. I'd like to meet you and your family again. Merry Christmas -Mayumi

Dear Sarla I was very happy when Romika said she would make this book for you. I am your fan and think you deserve this honor and much more. Sarla, I would say that my trip to Canada was very very special. And it would not have been if I had not known you and your family. You had made me feel welcomed and loved in a way that I did not expect. Your joy is impressive. Even with the problems and difficulties, you are always smiling. I clearly remember your heartfelt laughter and it was impossible not to laugh together with you. That's exactly what I'll keep forever from you: your optimistic laugh. When I have kids, I want to be just like you: a super mother, who talk frankly and allows the children to live their own lives, thinking for themselves. It's because of you that they are exactly what they are: three wonderful people, cheerful, spontaneous and friendly like you. At first, when I returned to Brazil, my desire to return was huge. I have not given up the idea of returning one day. I'm sure we'll see each other again and then I'll cry again... but at that time from happiness. A big hug and lots of kisses, Your Brazilian Samantham

A Cousin is a Ready-Made Friend for Life

A Mother's love is something that no one can explain, It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain, It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may. For nothing can destroy it or take it away... It is patient and forgiving when all others are foresaking, And it never fails or falters even if the heart is breaking... It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns, And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems... It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation, And it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation... A many splendoured miracle man cannot understand And another wondrous evidence of God's tender guiding hand.

Sarla (a second mom to everyone), I can remember the first time I met you (and I don't always remember the first impressions I get from everyone I meet), but I remember well my first impressions of you. The first thing that came to my mind when I met you was what a beautiful name, and wow! Sarika is a lucky girl to have such sweet and loving mother. Sarla I want you to know I think of you often because you are one of the most amazing people I have ever met, you can light up a room with your smile, you care for everyone, and you take in all of your girls friends as though they were your own flesh and blood. Always remember that when I think of you I think of you fondly and I think of what a wonderful person you are, what a huge heart you have, and all that you have done for me and everyone else. Love Always Aleesha xo xo

Dearest Sarla, Just want to take this opportunity to Thank You and here is why... I met you almost 10 years ago but the biggest impact you had in my life was from 2003 - 2008. In my early to mid- twenty's when I was dazed and confused, you never hesitated to help me out. You offered me your home, always fed my belly, and treated me like I was one of yours. This letter is to let you know that you are one of the most amazing wife, daughter, aunt, friend and more importantly words can not describe the mother. You are not only a mother to your 3 beautiful daughters, but to all the other people you have played the "mother role" to. You have no idea how much you have helped me out. Thank you for being a wonderful role model. I love you very much and will never forget your unbelievable kindness. Keep smiling :) Love always, Laila

Dear Mrs. Nair, When I first heard of what your daughters were putting together for you my first thought was "If anyone deserves this, it is Mrs. Nair" Thank you for always being kind to me and opening your home to me and my friends for my bridal shower. I will always appreciate the work you and your daughters put in for me that day. Also, thank you for letting me eat all your fruit roll ups every time I would visit as a little girl. I would eat the whole box and instead of hiding them from me you would make sure they were always stocked in the house when I came to visit Sarika. If I could use only three words to describe you-- they would be kind, warm and inviting. They are the first three that pop in my head, but the list goes on. I have always thought that Sarika, Ashika and Romika are a reflection of the incredible woman that you are. They get their beauty from you, both inside and out. Love, Maria Rahmany (Ayne)

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away...

Merry Christmas to such a BEAUTIFUL, CARING and FABULOUS woman! I walked into your home for the first time when I was five years old and I felt like I was in my own. Twenty years have gone by and today, I walk into your home feeling the very same way I did when I was a child. It is because of you that I never once felt like I was just a guest. I can’t thank you enough for making me feel like I was apart of your family. I can’t look back at my childhood without remembering all of the times you made sure that we always had something to eat, that we got home safe and that we could call you if we ever needed anything. You are a mother not only to three beautiful girls but you are a mother to each and every one of us that has been fortunate enough to get the opportunity to say ‘thank you’. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year! Love, Nicole

Dear Sarla, Thank you very much for all your love and kindness, and thank you for opening up your house to me. I really appreciate all the things you have done for me, especially for always cooking my favourite food when I come over. I also want to thank you for your daughter who I love very much. You have made me feel part of the family and I am very happy for that. Thank you again for everything! -Milton

Dear Super Mom , Sarla Hi !! Mom .. I’m Ploy, the Thai girl. I hope you also remember me. ^_^ The time I that I was in your house with your family is still in my mind. It passed so fast. I was with your family almost 9 months. It was the first time in my life that I had to live by myself. Before I reached Vancouver, I was a bit scared about what was going to happen with me in the country that I have never been to. Since I met you, you made me feel safe because you told me to act as if I was in my own house. You and the Nair family made me a part of your family. So I want to say the biggest "Thank You ”. Sometime you were like my teacher out of the class room. When we watched American TV shows together, I always asked you what this sentence means or what that sentence means. You always tried to help me understand every single time. You are so thoughtful. ^_^ I have something that I never told you... “I really love watching TV with you.” I loved the shows that you liked to watch. I do miss you, mom. (It makes me almost cry T_T ) Sometimes you were the best cook in the world. >_< I love your dinner. I also remember every single meal that you cooked, especially mashed potato with barbecue chicken and Caesar salad. I used to hate and never wanted to try Caesar salad before I went Canada. But now I really love it. Anytime I eat it, I always miss you and want to eat Caesar salad that you make. Ha ha ha. Anyways, you were my mom for over 9 months in Vancouver. I’m so lucky that I had a host family like yours !! <<

Dear Sarla mami, Words cannot express what an amazing lady you are and how much you mean to me. You have always been such a warm hearted and compassionate person who has always been there for me. You go out of your way for others and I am truly grateful to have you in my life. Growing up, I have spent a lot of time at your house and know first hand not only how amazing you are but also how fantastic your cooking is. :) I wish you lots of love and happiness. May all your wishes and goals be fulfilled. Thanks for everything. Love Always, Shivi

A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie. ~Tenneva Jordan

"Mothers hold their children's hands for a while - their hearts forever."

Once upon a time... I missed my school bus to Seattle, and an incredible woman helped me by taking me to Seattle for a weekend! It was amazing, much better with my host family than with some people I didn’t know! She didn’t have to take me there, but I know she did it because she is a great person! I'm not her daughter, but I know that what she did for me, she would do for anyone else. This story marked my life forever! I can't forget all other things she did for me. When my mom couldn't be there for me, there she was... my second mom... You, Sarla! Thank you for everything!! I miss you a lot! I always talk about you and your family here at home! =] I hope you the best! And I hope some day we will meet again! Marília Tiemy Matrubashi.

I am a student from Guatemala and I went to Canada to learn English. I lived in a very cool house made of happiness and really good moments. At the center of this family was. . . .Sarla. She was like my mother in those four months that I was there, and she always made delicious food! She always helped me and if I was cold, she gave me a blanket! I miss her so much and if I had the opportunity to come back to Vancouver, I wish I could live in that house again! Congratulation to the Nair family. . . you have a strong and good woman in the center of your family. You are all so lucky! Thanks for everything Sarla Nair! - Ximena

Dear Sarla Aunty, While I think of what to write, I think of what others may be writing. I suspect that some of the other letters will be very similar. This is probably because everyone's letters are so truthful of who you are. Your unconditional love for family makes you the person you are today. You have always been there when any of us needed you and I know that you will always be there for us in the future. I would lastly like to just say thanks for all the love and support you have given us in the past and especially this year. Oh, and you have raised three great daughters as well, thought I should mention them somewhere. Vinay

Dear Sarla: You are an amazing person, living with you has been one of the greatest things that has happened in my life. I don't know if you know how valuable you are, but during all the time that I lived in your house, I could see a lot of your virtues. You are a person who takes care of all your family, and you do a lot of things at the same time, you make the food for everyone especially for your husband. You are a woman with lots and lots of love to give. When I stayed in your house, you gave me all that I wanted. You are a wonderful mom with a big heart. Really I'm very grateful to have lived with a family like yours, all of you made me feel a part of the family and I think it's all thanks to you... Really thank you for everything. I'll remember you for the rest of my life. Well I only want to tell you that I love you and I miss you. Remain as you are and never change! A warm hug. See you soon!!! -Rosa

Dear Sarla, It’s Christmas again and it’s impossible to forget what you and your family did for me during the time I spent in Vancouver. You are very important to me because you were (and still are) the best host mother in the world. I appreciate everything we have done together and people like you are not easy to find. You gave me a great room at your home, served me the best Indian and Canadian food, and most importantly, you shared your life and family with me. You have no idea how grateful my mother is for all your kindness and attention. That’s why I can call you an angel and why I can say that I love you! I take this opportunity to invite all of you to visit me in Brazil. Everyone will be very welcome and I’m sure you will all love this beautiful and incredible country. Merry Christmas!! Brazilian kisses. With all my love., Carol

 Life is Beautiful

We all love you very much... Merry Christmas !

Mom, We have shared countless laughs and incredible moments that I will never forget. You have taught me so much about what is really important in life. Thank you for believing more in family, friends, and creating memories, than in the superficial things. I hope you never forget how loved you are, and how much you are appreciated. This book is a tribute to the amazing woman you are, and all the good deeds you have done in your life that will never go unnoticed. I know that you have made a difference in more lives than you will ever know. As much as you have had to sacrifice of yourself to selflessly give everyone around you everything you could possibly give, I hope you know that taking care of yourself, and being happy yourself, would really be the biggest gift you can give to us all. ~Romika
