 Who Am I 2011~2012
My name is Skylar Paige Lingerfelt and I am fourteen years old. I completed this Who Am I portfolio as a Freshman at Caldwell Early College High School in 2011-2012. I learned a lot about myself from this portfolio, including that I am a very sentimental person and I have a lot about my life to be thankful for. My favorite page was my thank you letter because it meant a lot to me to be able to read it to my Paw right before he passed away. This year flew by for me with some memories of meeting seven wonderful people that I never knew would turn into my best friends and although this year had some sad moments, like when I lost my great grandfather, it's been full of so very many blessings and it seems like everyday just keeps getting better and better.
This book is in memory of my great grandfather, George Wesley Nichols June 10, 1924~December 21, 2011 | "My Paw"

My mom and dad were my chaperone's. Emily Poteet was in my day group. We went jaywalking to the White House. We were at Lincoln's Memorial and a limo was pulling up and this massive group of people went running to it and I thought they were saying "Paula Deen!" So all my friends kept going, "Who?" So as outspoken as I am, I screamed, "It's Paula Deen, y'all!" It turned out to be Paulie D from Jersey Shore.

 OUTER BANKS!
One of my relics is a turkey feather that my great grandfather, Pop got me. It is important to me because losing Pop was one of the worst pains I've ever had to experience and that feather makes me think of Pop and what he loved to do, which was hunt. Pop got killed by a game warden on his property at Wilkesboro, NC on the date of April 9, 2009. I miss him all the time. He taught me a lot in life and I'll never forget it all. He is one of my heroes and I wish I could be more like him. I miss the little things the most, like his "ears," his popcorn jar, his recliner, his smile, stories and his big bear hugs. It is true that you never realize what you have until it's gone. | Clyde Hill Coffey September 13, 1932~April 8, 2009
One of my relics is my Maw's apron. She was such an amazing woman and I thank God for allowing me to have her in my life for twelve years. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about her but I know she's in Heaven. This apron was made for Maw by her niece, Mary. It is yellow and has different colored flowers on it and says her name Beulah and in the pocket there is a red Gladiola because that was her favorite flower. | Beulah Evelyn Nichols "My Maw" August 22, 1923~September 13, 2009
One of my relics is a picture of me and my mommy when I was just a baby. This picture is important to me because it makes my heart happy. My mouth is wide opened and I'm so happy because I've got the best mom in the whole entire world and nothings ever going to change that. She's sacrificed so much just for me. Day by day, she amazes me. When I love, I give it all I've got like my mother does. When I'm scared, I bow my head and pray like my mother does. When I feel weak and unpretty, I know I'm beautiful and strong because I see myself like my mother does. She's made my whole childhood life magical and I don't think many other kids can say that but I can. When I become a wife, I hope I can be strong, supportive, loving, generous and beautiful through it all. just like my mom. When I become a mother, I hope I can just be like my mom because words can't describe how wonderful of a mother she is at all. She makes me laugh and I just love her so much.
One of my relics is a picture of me and my daddy when I was younger. It is important to me because it reminds me of all the good times we had when I was a little girl. Used to, if it was just me and him at home, he would let me paint his nails and put make up on him. That's how much he loves me. He took me in like I was his own and has raised me without complaint. I thank God for letting him be my daddy. He's always been a real man and provided for his family. I love him so much and he's so amazing, supportive, loving, funny, protective, strong, and dependable.
One of my relics is a pair of working gloves. My great grandfather, Paw recently passed away. He had cancer and he was in hospice. We went to see him every day. Paw was always the life of the party and the caretaker. I love him so much and I was so close to him. It hurts the most because everything reminds me of him. I miss our conversations, our laughs, his smile, holding his hand, and how happy he got when people came and seen him. I used to always sit beside him in church and now his spot is empty. I praise God that He put an angel in my life. I got a pair of his working gloves and they mean the world to me because my Paw's hands experienced sweat, blood and sad moments. I put my hand in the gloves and just feel Paw again. They're all duck taped over where the fingers have came unsewn but that just tells how Paw was. He never complained. | George Wesley Nichols "My Paw" June 10, 1924~December 21, 2011
Greatest Accomplishment... My greatest accomplishment was when I got saved. It was several Sundays after my Pawpaw Bill passed away and I was so hurt. It was the first time I'd ever had anybody close to me pass away. I didn't know how to deal with it and I was just eleven years old. Our preacher asked at the end of service every Sunday if anybody needed to come up to the altar and that Sunday, I kept getting a gut feeling that I should go. Everyone had their eyes closed and I felt someone push me and strangely enough, no one was there. I know in my heart that whoever pushed me was Pawpaw, telling me that I needed to be saved and give my heart to Jesus. My old pastor, Todd Cardwell, Pawpaw and I was involved in me being saved. My accomplishment took place at Rufus Baptist Church in Mulberry, North Carolina. The accomplishment took place on July 20, 2008. I chose this accomplishment to share over any others because being saved changed my life and helped me become a better Christian and person. God used Pawpaw Bill to save me.
Dear Paw, I just wanted to take the time to say thank you and I love you with all of my heart. You are an amazing and wonderful man. So many unfortunate things have knocked on your door throughout your life and you still stay strong. That’s what you have taught everyone best is to stay strong in any situation and keep your head held high. You are such a sweet, funny, caring and smart great grandfather to me. I thank God for giving you to me. Day after day, you continue to amaze me. You are my superman and I look up to you more than I look up to anyone. I only wish you knew how much you really mean to me. You have blessed my life in every way possible just by being in it. You have gave me some of the best memories a person could ever have. I’ve outgrown baby dolls and cartoons but I’ll never outgrow my need for you. I love our conversations and listening to your stories about when you were younger. You are the best great grandfather anyone could ever ask for. A grandfather has silver in his hair and gold in his heart. Because of you, I have memories to last me a life time. I thank you for all of those and just being my Paw. Being Paw is what puts the smile on my face when I come to see you. You are one of my heroes. Always remember how much I love you and how much I appreciate you. Love your great grand baby, Skylar | To: George Wesley Nichols Address: Heaven

Dear Mom, I just want to say thank you first and foremost for everything you do. For being my biggest fan, being my rock when I wasn't steady, forgiving me when I'm wrong, going out of your way to make me happy even though I don't deserve it all the time, taking me to doctor, dentist, eye doctor appointments, running me out to Walmart in the pouring rain just to buy stuff for school projects that I didn't mention earlier and they're due the next day and most of all for you unconditional love. You have sacrificed so much for me throughout the years and I really do appreciate all of it. I love how you always make the best out of everything. You are fearless and your not scared of anything. You work hard and I know it's not easy. You are one of the strongest people I've ever, ever met in my life. You always go to church and have raised me and the girls to go to church every Sunday. You've taught us to pray when we're scared, worried or unsure about things. You have helped me through so much. When I look at you, I only see beautiful. You are beautiful and wonderful in so many ways. You make me laugh when I feel like crying. You are so creative. Your always making sure everyone else it taken care of before yourself. I want to be just like that. You are my number one role model. When I become a mother, I want to be just like you. I want to be looked up to just like you are. I am so proud to be Shannon Renee Helton's daughter. You are my definition of perfect. I don't tell you enough but you are the best in the world and I love you with all of my heart. I'll always be your little country bumpkin baby. Love, Sky
People that Inspire Me... | Pawpaw Honey- He grew up with nothing and he tells us stories all the time about how he had so much fun. It seems like no matter the circumstances, he finds a way to make each and every day a good day with a smile on his face. He makes me laugh all the time. He's always cracking jokes. He raised his children in church and fortunately, my mom took after him. He also cooks good country food. He's so sweet and I love him. Peggy and Roger Greene- The week they lost their daughter, they still got up in church and said, "I want to thank the Lord for being so good to us this week." They both have lost so much in their lives and so many unfortunate things have happened to them, but they still come to church each and every Sunday trusting in the Lord. Mawmaw Linda, Aunt Debbie and Mawmaw Faye- They lost their father and husband to an ignorant game warden over feeding turkeys. Pop lost his life and that man walked away free and clear. The way they lost Pop is horrible, but they still find a way to smile. Mom- She's sacrificed so much for me and I can't thank her enough. She would do anything in the world for anybody no matter if they treat her good or not. She's so pretty and so creative. I know I could never be half the person she is, but I wish I could. She has a heart of gold and she's so nice to everyone. Uncle Eddie- This man rocks. He's my great, great uncle and he's 92 years old. I did my Living Links paper on him and I've grown so much closer to him. He's never had much but he loves his family more than anything in the world. Bless his heart, he lost his wife on his birthday. I'm crazy over my Uncle Eddie and I love him.
 My Inspirations!
For my Living Links paper, I have selected to interview my great great Uncle Eddie about his life story. I chose to interview Uncle Eddie because he is getting older and I want to spend as much time with him as I can. Uncle Eddie is my great grandfather’s brother, Paw. Each and every moment I am with my Uncle Eddie, he reminds me of Paw. Uncle Eddie was born on April 2, 1927 in Virginia. Born into a poor family, he had six siblings and his daddy was a preacher. He had three brothers, Richard, George and Clarence and he had three sisters, Lucy, Marie and Joncie. They had cows, sheep and two horses. Uncle Eddie said that when he was just seven years old, the Nichols family moved to Morganton, North Carolina. I asked him about his schooling when he got here. He said, “We went to Oak Hill School when we first got here. Me and George never got in trouble at school. We always stayed together. I looked after George because I was older. We never had a problem with anyone, we liked everyone.” I had always been told that Uncle Eddie’s father was a preacher. I asked him where they went to church or where he preached. He said, “When we first moved down here, we went to Shiloh Methodist Church. We went almost every Sunday. Daddy didn’t preach there. We didn’t go for the denomination, we just went because it was the closest church to our house. Back then, you had to walk everywhere you went. Daddy had a drivers license but he didn’t drive because he couldn’t.” My family has always gone to a little church named Rufus Baptist Church in Mulberry. Paw raised his children in that church and my grandma raised my mom in that church and now, I am being raised in that same church. Uncle Eddie said that a bunch of people were going to Rufus Baptist Church, so the family started going there. Uncle Eddie’s birth mother died when he was sixteen years old. I asked him about it. He said, “Mom died when I was sixteen. She had TB. A little red spot got on the back of her knee and spread all the way to her waist. The doctors didn’t know much back then. All doctors were just ol’ country doctors. Dr. Lovett gave her Laudman. They don’t make that no more. She died in the next three days.” | While in his teens, Eddie went back to Virginia to stay with his grandfather. His grandfather owned seven hundred acres of land in Virginia. Uncle Eddie helped his grandfather on the farm. When he was not working with him, he would work at a mill. He made fifteen cent an hour. About a dollar or so a day. I asked Uncle Eddie how prices were back then and he said, “Backer was five cents. Cigarettes were ten cents.” In 1937, he moved back here and went to Hudson to look for a job and found a factory that is now called Hibriten Chair. There he made twenty three cent an hour. He worked there for around a year. Uncle Eddie continued on with a story about another job and said, “One day a man came by and said, ‘Ain’t you a Nichol?’ ‘Yes, sir.’ He asked if he was working and how he liked it and offered me a job. He said it would pay thirty-five cents an hour. I knew I was gonna be rich and it never happened. When I worked, I did not have a car. The man kept trying to sell a car that look like a brand new one. I finally got it and he took it for forty-nine dollars. I said I would give him the other dollar next pay day and I did. It was a Claw Top Roadster. There was snaps on the curtains in the back of the windows. It had no heat or air conditioning.” | Living Links...
In our family, they have always mentioned a thing called “double cousins” I never really understood what that meant. Paw was married to my great grandmother, Beulah Coffey. Uncle Eddie married my great grandmother’s sister, Marybelle Coffey. Uncle Eddie used to stop by Marybelle’s house and say “just a couple words.” The two met before they had even grown up. Aunt Marybelle and Uncle Eddie married on August First nineteen-forty two. They had six kids together. Mary, Louise (deceased), Caroline, Nick, Sandra (deceased), Martha and David. Uncle Eddie and Aunt Marybelle are still married. I asked Uncle Eddie if any big events happened in Virginia. He said a lot had happened. His grandpa owned seven-hundred acres with a farm on it. You could see turkeys and bear traps. “I was coming down an old road and an old ram sheep hit me in the back and knocked me about thirty feet. Another time, Grandpa was sawing and bent over and an ol’ sheep hit him in the rear end. Pop took a rifle and shot him. He skinned him and sold it. Some sheep weighed two-hundred pounds. Richard (oldest brother) was not scared of the sheep. He would always get a stick after them.” I asked him to tell me something that had happened to him and Paw in Virginia. He said, “A Flying Squirrel went down my shirt. It was the purtiest old nest you ever seen and I poked it with a stick. The squirrel wasn’t biting, just scratching. I told George to wop it with a stick and that got it out.” He told me another story, “Me and George went hunting. We took an ax and a sixteen gage double barrel gun. Two squirrels got in a fight going up a hill. I killed both of them. George never said any more about my ol’ gun not killing anything.” I had heard very few stories that had been passed down on Uncle Eddie and Paw’s side so I asked him about it. He said, “Way over a hundred years ago, one of Grandpa’s brothers killed a man. That man’s brother came to town with some men and started telling people he was gonna kill Grandpa’s brother because he was that man’s brother. Grandpa’s brother heard about it. They were riding horses. Grandpa’s brother shot him right under the arms and he fell over dead. The other boys told him they wasn’t with him. Grandpa’s brother killed the man before he could kill him. I interviewed Uncle Eddie because he is so precious and I enjoy spending time with him. He reminds me so much of Paw. I am so glad I had the chance to be able to do this because this piece of paper, will be with me for the rest of my life. I will always have stories that are precious to pass on to the family from one of the greatest uncles ever, Uncle Eddie.

My mom's side of the family is German, Russian, Irish, Scandinavian, Norwegian and Cherokee Indian. For my project in World History, I created two poster boards: One for Irish and the other for Cherokee Indian. I talked about the 'Blood of Tears' for my Cherokee poster board and their culture. I made a dream catcher and 'Skylarfied' it. It was pink, purple and blue. For my Irish project, I told about some of their stories that have been passed down. I got little gold chocolates and Lucky Charms. This project let me learn about the past of my family and our ancestors that I had never known. 26: To my Mommy and Daddy, I love you both so very much. I cannot thank you enough for everything you do for me. I hope you both know how much I really do love you. I may act like a brat sometimes and I know at times, I'm hard to handle, but you keep loving me. I am so blessed. I love being in a home that prays, says sorry, makes the best out of every little moment we have together, and loves one another dearly. I hope when I'm older, I'm a good a parent as you both have been to me. I love you. To my Bryanna and Jayden, you girls amaze me. I hope you both look up to me and I hope that you always know that I love you with all of my heart. You girls are my princesses, my stars, and I always have best friends around when I'm with you girls. We always have the best time just sitting there playing. I know we may not always get along but I love being with y'all. I am so very proud of both of my girls. I love you babies. To my Kaylan, you are my sister. We have always been so close and I love being around you. I love our late night conversations and how we used to get up at night and get us a Coke and fix bologna sandwiches. I am so proud of you. I can't believe your graduating this year and leaving me. It's going to take a piece of my heart but always know that I love you and I am here for you. To my little prince Drayton, the day you were born, my life changed. You are a miracle. I know your not even one yet but you are really something special to me. I love to see you laugh and smile. You are going to turn into a wonderful young man just like your Pawpaw.
Hailey Jordan Shell, first and foremost, I love you with all of my heart! You've been my best friend since first grade when we were in Mrs. Oliver's class at Hudson Elementary School. You have a heart of gold and you are so sweet. We always have so much fun together. We're a brunette and a blonde with an inseparable bond. You make my smile a little brighter, my laugh a little louder, and my life a lot better. You've always been there for me. We're so crazy together and I want you to know that I appreciate you so much and I love you. You are my BEST BEST BEST friend in the whole entire universe and nothing is ever going to change that. You amaze me each and every day. I'm so proud of you and the awesome 15 year old that you've grown into. I'm always here for you. Lots of love, Sky
Christmas morning, my sisters and I wake up extremely early and we go in our living room and shake our presents underneath our beautiful Christmas tree. We go and wake our mom and dad up and then we open up all of our presents together. After that, we go to Mawmaw Ann's and Pawpaw Honey's house to eat breakfast. We open up our gifts there and just sit around and talk. After we leave their house, we go to Mawmaw Linda's and Pawpaw Larry's house to open up our gifts and spend time with them. If its snowing, we go across the road to my great grandmother's big field and pack the snow down to make a trail for sledding. This tradition dates back to a long time ago. Nothing is really required to make this tradition possible except for everyone to bring their smiles and hugs to make it all come together. We do this every single Christmas. This tradition brings us all closer together and gives up the opportunity to spend time together and thank God for every little thing he has done to bring us together. This tradition couldn't be improved in any way at all. There's absolutely no way it could get any more better. Traditions are important because they make memories that are priceless and stay in our hearts forever. Opening up presents, getting a Christmas tree, decorating the Christmas tree together as a family, Christmas plays at church to celebrate the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ are all traditions that have been going on for centuries and will be going on forever! | Favorite Family Tradition...
The Most Precious Family Recipe... "Maw's Egg Custard" | My great grandmother, Maw was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a while back. Before she lost her memory, she used to be the family cook. She used to fix it a lot. | Use a nine inch glass plate Grease and flour Mix together and bake until it's smooth Ingredients: 3 tablespoons of flour 3 eggs 1 cup of sugar 2 tablespoons of melted butter 1 can of milk 1 teaspoon of vanilla 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg Bake at 125 degrees for an hour

This world would be such a better place if everyone accepted that God really and truly is the creator of all things. God is number one in my life and I wish it would be in everyone else's, too. There would still be sin but no murders. If anyone had God in their heart, they couldn't be so cruel to kill one of God's children. Instead of all these dirty songs on the radio that talk about un Godly things, there would be songs about worshiping and praising God for his mighty acts and for dying on the cross to save us all from our wicked sins.

On December 21, 2011 the good Lord decided that it was time for Paw to go home. It will always be hard because Paw was really and truly the heart and backbone of our family. Paw was a wonderful, amazing and precious great grandfather. He gave me some of the best memories a person could ever have and I thank God for having the opportunity to have such a good, loving and sweet person to look up to. In my eyes, Paw was just wonderful in every way possible. He couldn't ever do nothing wrong. He was strong and he taught all of us to wear a smile when things go wrong, to spend as much time as you can with family and to keep God in your heart. I will miss sitting with my Paw every single Sunday. I love him so very much and there is always going to be a big part of me missing but you have to pick yourself up and move on with life and don't let it pass you by. | My Paw...
I wrote one of my letter in seminar to Paw. I had wrote it about two weeks before and had never read it to Paw. That Wednesday, I just kept getting that little voice inside my head saying, "You better do it. You better read that letter." It took forever to get the letter to my phone and I just about gave up. Paw could hear people talking. He would raise his sweet eyebrows when you talked, but Paw couldn't respond. I went and sat beside his bed and said, "Paw, we had to write a letter to someone we don't always say thank you to and I decided to write mine to you." I read it to him and not even three hours later, my precious Paw passed away. We were all sitting around his bed talking to him because he was getting worse and worse. I will always remember the exact minute he took his last breath, the way his hand felt holding it all day, how much he loved me and how life really is short and I've learned to make sure people know how much they really do mean to me and my Paw meant the world to me. I have messed up pretty bad a few times in my life but reading that letter to Paw is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I read that letter at Paw's funeral, too. | Letter to Paw...

Self-Reflection of Who Am I... | I enjoyed Who Am I. I liked how we got to add our personal touch. I enjoyed doing it on the computer, rather than on paper. My favorite pieces were my thank you letter and telling who inspires us. I don't think I would do anything differently because I turned everything in on time and I think I've done a good job on it. I would take out the technology time line because I don't really care for it. I thought Who Am I was a great thing to do as a school assignment because this is a scrapbook that you are going to keep for the rest of my life. I will see pictures of my friends and family from right now and I will flip through the pages and smile because I had a wonderful high school experience and I will probably cry because time flies by way too fast.

You are growing into a wonderful young lady and you have so much many great things coming up into your future. You make good grades, which isn't easy to do. You are almost always happy and skipping around with a smile on your face. You had to write a thank you letter to someone you don't necessarily always tell thank you, and you chose your Paw. That changed your life drastically and Paw knew you loved him and cared about him. He's looking down on you smiling and he's not hurting anymore. You had a lot of courage to read that letter at his funeral. I know it took everything you had to move I hope you always find a reason to smile. Don't let anybody stand in the way of your happiness. Make good choices that you think God would be proud of and make sure your not saying no to yourself when you tell others yes. Don't ever let anyone change you no matter the circumstances. Love yourself first and everything else will fall into line. Keep God in your heart. Stick and stones an stone break your bones, I know what your feeling. Words like those won't steal your glow, your one in a million. Whatever you've been told, you worth more than gold. So hold your head up high, it's your time to shine, from the inside out it shows, your worth more than gold. Life ain't easy kid, but to make it to the sunshine you must first put up with the rain. When life gives you a thousand reasons to cry, show life you got a thousand reasons to smile. So many people in life are going to tell you that you can't do something. What you have to do is turn around and say "Watch me."" Remember, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Life is too short to be anything but happy.
