FC: A LOVE LETTER... TO MY SISTER

1: Krista, How do I put into words the bond that you and I share, or describe the love I feel for you? There is no way that seems adequate. Ours is a relationship that has morphed and changed over the years. I loved you from the first time I saw you when you were hours old. I felt like your second Mommy your first years. I left home when you were still so young and watched you grow up from afar after that. Our age difference seemed so big at one time, but over the years - as you turned into the amazing woman you are - it ceased to exist. You went from being my ‘almost baby’, to my much younger sister, to an equal, best friend, confidant, mentor – a person who inspires me and who I greatly admire. I am so impressed and proud of the beautiful person you are. You are smart, ambitious, talented, tough, loving, compassionate, gentle, wise and strong. You are a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. You make this world a better place for so many. You and I are alike in so many ways - we get each other in a way no one else can. The friendship that you and I share is one of the things I value most in my life. There is nothing in this world like a sister-friend. You’ve watched me grow up as well – have seen me go through my life and make my mistakes. You’ve helped me through those experiences more than you will ever know. Your love and support have saved me in some of my darkest hours. You have been my rock so many times - let me cry on your shoulder, buoyed me up and helped me to stay strong. You always know how to make me feel better and you make me laugh like no one else I know. I wouldn’t have survived without you - my biggest defender and cheerleader. Your words have brought tears to my eyes or a smile to my face so many times. When I see me through your eyes, I know I can go on. You’ve seen me get knocked down and get back up – more than once. These are my lessons, the things I've learned the hard way so far. “A smart person learns from their mistakes. A wise person learns from the mistakes of others.” This is the way of thinking that helped me to be strong, to heal and overcome – to become better, not bitter. It’s the acquired wisdom that I try to remember as I go forward in life. These are the things I would share with you as a second Mommy, older sister, a sister-friend or simply as someone who loves you beyond words. Denise

2: STRENGTH

3: Being strong doesn’t mean that you’re never scared; Being strong means feeling the fear but doing it anyway. Being strong doesn’t mean you don’t get knocked down; Being strong means that you always get up. Being strong doesn't mean that you never cry; Being strong means that you let your tears heal you... And then start fighting for what you believe in again. DG

4: Strength and bravery are most often recognized and felt in hindsight. Courage is felt in the present, when you are overcoming a fear of some sort. You gain strength by facing and conquering your fears. DG

5: "We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face ...we must do that which we think we cannot." Eleanor Roosevelt

6: When you are at your lowest point, you are open to the greatest positive change. Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the strength to deal with them. Strength doesn’t come from what you can do; it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t do.

8: "I can be changed by what happens to me. I refuse to be reduced by it." Maya Angelou | I’ve had a card with this quote on my fridge for around 20 years, it’s my all time favourite quote! I’ve looked at it every day for so long; and in times of trouble, it’s made me think, “Okay life, this is what you’ve got for me now? Bring it, because although you might knock me down for awhile, I’m only going to come out of it better, stronger and wiser. I REFUSE to settle for anything less!” Remember, you choose your attitude and your reaction to every situation that happens to you – you DECIDE. It’s one of the few things in this life that is in your control. Try to maintain class and dignity when dealing with adversity and don’t let others bring you down to their level. DG

9: You can be stunned, awakened, and changed by what happens to you, but choose to grow from it, and refuse to be reduced by it. Repeat after me: “I am determined to live a happy life no matter my challenges. I will turn all my tales of fury into tales of glory. I will turn all of my tales of woe into tales of WOW!”

10: Don’t allow your temporary wounds to permanently transform you into someone you aren’t. Don’t let your struggles or hurts make you bitter. You lose if you do. You have to forgive in order to move forward, not for the other person’s sake, but for your own. DG

11: Strength shows not only in the ability to persist, but in the ability to start over. F. Scott Fitzgerald

12: Let your past make you better, not bitter.

13: Sometimes the right thing to do and the easy thing to do are not the same thing. DG

14: ATTITUDE

15: You can't have a positive life with a negative attitude.

16: The amazing thing about life is that you choose what you allow into and out of it – you choose how things affect you, and how you affect the world.

17: If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you'd never think a negative thought.

18: You are powerful when you believe in yourself – when you know that you are capable of anything you put your mind to. You are beautiful when your strength and determination shines as you follow your own path – when you aren’t disheveled by the obstacles along the way. You are unstoppable when you let your mistakes educate you, as your confidence builds from experiences – when you know you can fall down, pick yourself up, and move forward.

20: If you want to be happy... ...BE.

22: The emotion, attention and energy you project onto a situation is like pouring gas onto a flame. Be careful with your thoughts, what you focus on, when dealing with adversity. Focus on the desired outcome, not the possible negative outcomes. When you get nervous or scared about something, direct your thoughts and focus to what you want to happen and how you’ll FEEL when it does happen. Send out vibrations matching the frequency of what you want (not what you don’t want) – like attracts like, this is simple Law of Attraction. DG

23: What we create in our minds affects how we feel which affects our vibration. It doesn't matter if it happened, if it's about to happen or if you're just worrying about it. If you are thinking it AND feeling it for long enough, you are attracting energy similar to it.

24: Surround yourself with positive people. Positive attracts positive.

25: No matter how much negativity is thrown at you by others, there is absolutely no need for you to stay put and participate in the self-destruction they choose for their own lives. You decide how your soul grows. The extent of your happiness depends on the quality of your thoughts. So be positive. Some of the best days of your life haven’t happened yet.

26: It is ultimately only our own thoughts that hurt us.... Simply feeling what we are feeling, and dealing with it honestly, can be very healing. We always have the freedom to choose how we wish to respond to whatever life presents to us. Let go of how you thought your life should be, and embrace the real life that is trying to work its way into your consciousness. Change what you can change, change your thoughts about what you can’t change, and move on in peace.

27: A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes. Mahatma Gandhi

28: GRATITUDE

29: Count your blessings, not your troubles. Live one day at a time. Let the wrong things go. Give more than you take. Look for the good in people and situations. Make time for those who matter. Laugh when you can. Cry when you need to. Focus on your priorities. Make decisions, not excuses. And always stay true to your values.

30: Choose to see the world through grateful eyes... It will never look the same way again.

32: More important than what happens to you, is what you make of what happens to you. The more thankful we are, the more beautiful this world appears. You must uncover the good in the bad, the happy in your sad, the gain in your pain, and what makes you grateful not hateful.

33: Gratitude turns what we have into enough.

34: Words to live by.... Count your blessings before what you have becomes what you had.

37: Having gratitude is huge. It will make your life a happier place. Learning this changed my life. There is always, always something to be grateful for, and finding it will help you to put life's challenges into perspective. Breathe, go inside yourself and find your gratitude. DG

38: INTUITION

39: Trust your feelings, gut instincts and inner guidance – they’re there for a reason; they’re there to protect you. Your inner voice is your connection to your higher power and your innate wisdom. It’s the voice of your soul and the angels who watch over you. If you are in danger, making the wrong decision or taking the wrong path; that voice will be trying desperately to get your attention. Trouble will follow when you over-rule or ignore that voice because it’s telling you something that you don’t want to hear or believe. DG

40: There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen. Rumi

42: Listening to your intuition, that little voice inside you, is probably the most important lesson I’ve learned. DG

43: Choose to listen to your inner voice, not the jumbled opinions of everyone else. Do what you know in your heart is right for YOU. It’s your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you. | If something doesn't feel right ... it probably isn't. Listen to your intuition. This is the best advice ever!

44: COMPASSION

45: Having compassion for people is so important... Try to be the person with the kind eyes and the gentle smile... Take the time to smile at and appreciate people... Give a genuine compliment. I’ve seen these small gestures make such a difference. A display of kindness costs you nothing, and it’s so worth the smile you put on someone’s face. DG

46: Sometimes you will say something really small and simple, but it will fit right into an empty space in someone’s heart. Dare to reach into the darkness, to pull someone else into the light. Remember, strong people stand up for themselves, but stronger people stand up for others too, and lend a hand when they’re able.

47: The smallest gesture can have the biggest affect on someone’s soul. Putting a smile on someone’s face is free. DG

49: Today will never come again. Be a blessing. Be a friend. Encourage someone. Take time to care. Let your words heal, and not wound.

50: Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have. You never know how much the people around you are hurting. You could be standing next to someone who is completely broken inside and you would never even know it. There are two ways to spread light in this world: You can either be a flame of hope, or a mirror that reflects it. Be one of the two every chance you get.

52: To be KIND... is more important than to be RIGHT. | Many times what people need is not a brilliant mind that speaks, but a SPECIAL HEART that LISTENS.

53: Be true to your values. Be honest. Do your best. Do things that bring you closer to your dreams. Take care of yourself, your family, and your friends. Treat people with respect. Be the person that makes others feel special. Be known for your kindness and honesty. In other words... Invest love into your life... because when you love life... life will love you back.

54: Friendships add a richness, love and meaning to your life that nothing else can. I can’t tell you how invaluable my friendships are to me. So many times in my life a friend has been a life line, my saving grace. Sometimes, just knowing someone will be there if you need them is all you need. Good friends love you for who you are, they witness your life, pick you up when you fall, don’t judge you, support you, remind you who you are or give you a kick in the butt when you need it. DG

55: Cherish those you have in your life because you never know when they won’t be there any longer. | There are fake people, and those who are true friends. There are people who take the heart out of you, and those who put it back. You have a choice of who to spend time with. True friends have an honest heart, and will go out of their way to help you when you need it most. Stick with the people who never let you down and who keep their promises – you can’t fake that.

56: LIFE LESSONS

57: A sense of humour is one of the most important tools you can have in dealing with life. If you can find something to laugh at in whatever is happening, it makes the ‘monster in the closet’ less scary and big. Finding something to laugh about will shift your perspective and make things easier and less daunting to deal with. It has saved my sanity many times. Laughter soothes your soul. DG

58: When somebody shows you who they are... believe them.

59: People who appear in your life - whether to HELP or to HARM - are all given by GOD. Meet all of them with a peaceful heart but a warrior's spirit. You will FAIL many times, but in failing you will LEARN... and in learning you will find your way. REMEMBER, there are no MISTAKES in life - only LESSONS. And lessons will keep repeating themselves until learned.

60: Some people will test you, some will use you, and some will teach you; but, most importantly, some will bring out the best in you.

61: Give but don't allow yourself to be used. Love but don't allow your heart to be abused. Trust but don't be naive. Listen to others but don't lose your own voice. | You are in charge of how you react to the people and events in your life. You can either give negativity power over your life or you can choose happiness instead. Take control and choose to focus on what is important in your life. Those who cannot live fully often become destroyers of life.” Anas Nin

62: Nurture your friendships, you never know what you mean to others. Cherish, love and appreciate the good people in your life, - make sure they know what they mean to you. True friends are the ones who love you and stand by you, no matter what. Lifelong friendships can be boundless; time and distance doesn't factor into them. DG

63: People inspire you or they drain you, pick them wisely.

65: You have to forgive. You don’t have to like the person, you don’t have to be friends with them, you don’t have to spend time with them ever again, but you have to forgive them, to let go, to let it rest. Because if you don’t, the resentment you carry inside of you will eat away at your soul.

66: This has been a painful and repeated lesson in my life... There are people or relationships that can be toxic to you. Sometimes, even a friendship or relationship that was once good can become toxic. Be careful of these people (emotional vampires as I call them) and relationships; for they can drain you and break your heart. If someone makes you feel bad more than they make you feel good; you have to re-evaluate that relationship. If it’s no longer healthy for you, the best thing to do is to release them with love. Wish them the best in your heart, but give yourself the gift of their absence from your life. DG

67: Letting go of negative people isn’t a reflection on how you feel about them, it’s a reflection on how much YOU LOVE YOU. | Sometimes being strong and moving on is the only choice you have. The hardest part of moving forward is not looking back

68: This I know to be true... If you hadn’t fallen down, you would never have learned how to get back on your feet. If you hadn’t been forced to let go and move on, you’d never have learned that you have the strength to stand on your own. If you hadn’t lost hope, you would never have found your faith. The best often comes after the worst happens. You can either move on, or you can dwell on the things you can’t change. Either way life moves on, with or without you. So learn from the past and then get on with your life. You will always grow stronger from pain if you don’t let it destroy you.

69: It's not your struggles or failures that define you. It's your ability to overcome them.

70: However good or bad a situation is now, it will change. Change is one thing you can count on, there's no point in fighting it. So embrace change, and realize that it happens for a reason. The reason may not always be obvious at first, but in time you will see it.

71: You can’t change most people. Either you accept who they are, or you start living your life without them. And just because something ends, doesn’t mean it never should have been. Don’t ever regret knowing someone in your life. Everyone you encounter teaches you something important. Some people come into your life as blessings; others come into your life as lessons. | You don't need to be in a relationship to be a complete person. You're complete because of who you are, not who you're with.

72: If you are waiting for someone else to make you happy, you’re missing out. Smile because you can. Choose happiness. Be the change you want to see in the world. Be happy with who you are now, and let your positivity inspire your journey into tomorrow. Happiness is often found where and when you decide to seek it. If you look for happiness within the opportunities you have, you will eventually find it.

73: You have to love and take care of yourself first and foremost. Be your own guardian. Don’t sacrifice yourself for love; if you have to, it’s not love. You can’t ‘love someone better,’ you can’t change someone – and, it’s not your job to. DG
