FC: Allen's LIFE | Author: Frieda Grierson
1: This is Allen Lee Grierson.
2: He was born in Pasadena, California on March 22, 1943.
3: Allen was the oldest boy out of four. First, there was Allen, second there was Timothy, Gary was the third and Patrick was the fourth and final boy. | Patrick wasn't born just yet to make it into the picture.
4: Their parents names were Thomas and Inez Grierson. Their family moved around a lot because Thomas was in the Navy. | This is Inez
5: Finally, Thomas and Inez settled in Iron Mountain/ Kingsford, Michigan and that is where Allen and his brothers grew up.
6: At a young age, Allen enjoyed working with his hands to create different types of art. When he reached the 10th grade, he realized that one day he would like to become an artist or an art teacher. After graduating high school in 1962 from Kingsford, Allen attended college at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
7: He chose this college for two reasons. The first is because he always wanted to live in Alaska. Second, he did some research on the university and found the Art department interesting. After settling in his new dorm, Allen accidentally bumped into the most beautiful girl that he believed was ever created. Her name was Mollie.
8: Allen and Mollie became good friends and took art courses together. Mollie wasn't as talented as Allen was in the art classes but she stayed in those classes just to spend time with him. In return, Allen took Education classes with Mollie and they both received their teaching certificates. After college, Allen proposed to Mollie.
9: They then got married in Mollie’s hometown, Shishmaref, Alaska. Shishmaref is a really small island located in the Chukchi Sea.
10: They then called Shishmaref their home and bought a house. Mollie got a job as the new second grade teacher. And Allen got a job as an Art teacher on the high school end of Shishmaref School. | O | The School | His home
12: Allen was able to make many forms of crafts with many different types of material. He was able to make sculptures out of stone.
13: Allen also made sculptures out of clay.
14: And flour with small beads for decoration.
15: These small magnets were made to look like Mollie’s parents, Davey and Frieda.
17: Allen was able to paint as well. He made this painting in 1989.
18: In 1990, he had to retire from teaching art in Shishmaref because of his health. A few years later, he and Mollie adopted their niece, Frieda.
20: Even though Allen retired from teaching art, he was still drawing and painting at home. His last drawing was of his great nephew, Christopher. This drawing was never completed but is kept in a safe place, in a frame that is hung in Mollie’s classroom. It is displayed there because she shows her students that Allen was able to not only create sculptures and paint scenery, but because he was also able to draw children who were just like they are and this shows his love for all children.
22: Allen lived to be only 67 years old, but he lived a wonderful and adventurous life.
