FC: Jacob and Jared's Transcendentalism Booklet
"A man is what he thinks about all day long." Ralph Waldo Emerson | With People being individuals, we tend to have our own thoughts, like, "I will be the best pilot," that repeat and repeat in our minds shaping what we become, who we become, and how we will become that person. We stick to ourselves and have our own desired dream, even if others do not see that dream, and we let it take control. It guides our actions, what sports or activities we play, the friends we make, and even simpler, the way we live our life. | By someone being who they are and doing the interests they pave their own way making themselves their thoughts, casing this quote to represent individualism. It represents the personality of the single person, changing when the mind of someone else is being evaluated. The thoughts of one person will not reflect the thoughts of someone else, because as a human race, we live as individuals.
"To be great is to be misunderstood." Ralph Waldo Emerson | Those who act as themselves, end up finding solutions, and leading new practices, because they engage in the practice of standing out among the crowd. Asking questions to things with seemingly obvious answers, pondering the things thought absurd, and doing things in a fashion no one thought possible, or even reasonable. The best way to great, is to be yourself. | To be misunderstood, means no one around can accept or see how the misunderstood person does. This makes that person an individual, because they are acting as themselves, even if no else acts in that fashion. They understand and see in a different perspective that the person right next to them, because they follow their mind wherever it takes them. | This picture reflects a person being himself, keeping his mindset on his own goals and ideas. He is misunderstood, unaccepted, yet Emerson says this is what makes a person great. In a sense he is correct, because they are the innovation and leaders of any society. They have ideas and viewpoints no other person can come by on their own.
"As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives." Henry David Thoreau | To carve the way, make a path, Henry's quote shows individualism by meaning we create our own future, our thoughts guide our actions, and lead us to where we will be successful in our lives. He shows us that by preserving on the path being carved out mentally on our own mindset is only created if we can keep that image fresh in our heads for an extended period of time remembering to mull it over day by day. In the end what is being said is that thought predicts the person and how he lives in his life. | People drill thoughts over and over in their heads every day, trying to bring to life, whatever happens to be pressing them for that day, month, year, or however long. People carve paths to new inventions all the time like for instance Apple's Ipods and Iphones or Bill Gates and Microsoft.
"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. " Henry David Thoreau | The main thing that this quote is trying to convey is that people should not be afraid to pursue their dreams. People should not be afraid to pursue their dreams because they only have one life to live and they should make the most of it. By chasing their dream people can achieve amazing feats and accomplish the pursuit of happiness which most people end up forgetting existed in the first place. Remember the dreams and live life to the fullest, because that will make the most out of any person. | This quote exhibits the theme of individualism because the author is telling the reader to live their life and to only worry about achieving their goals. This quote also shows that if an individual has not achieved their dreams, then that person is not living their ideal life. Thoreau shows the universal message of life, to achieve the dream envisioned one must embrace their dreams and tackle them with courage and diligence, because they only have one shot at the life being lived.
"Things do not change; we change." Henry David Thoreau | People as we progress in the ordinary life cycle, tend to change in thought process and opinion. As experiences in life affect the course of action once deemed inhumane suddenly become something you envy and need. Like a child's birth can make a mother originally against the slaughtering of another man by death penalty, appreciate that penalty, because of how they have changed. Every individual experiences some kind of mental change, and focus their life on different experiences, so the quote however small it is, has such a large impact on human life and the way we perceive things in our society, Thoreau may never be forgotten. | To be an individual, change must be experienced. To stay the same is impossible, even if similar views are carried, people still have small changes that reflect them. This reflects individualism in the sense of standing out by being the first to experience a change in some shape, way, or form. By changing, views are altered, yet any person sticks to being true to who they intend to be.
Bad Day By: Daniel Powter Where is the moment we needed the most You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost They tell me your blue skies fade to grey They tell me your passion's gone away And I don't need no carryin' on You stand in the line just to hit a new low You're faking a smile with the coffee to go You tell me your life's been way off line You're falling to pieces everytime And I don't need no carryin' on Cause you had a bad day You're taking one down You sing a sad song just to turn it around You say you don't know You tell me don't lie You work at a smile and you go for a ride You had a bad day The camera don't lie You're coming back down and you really don't mind You had a bad day You had a bad day | This song shows individualism by speaking of the how hard life can be for any person and the struggles we go through to become the person, we as individuals, seek to one day become. It shows how we ride the trail of life and we go through the motions, even the bitter, cold moments, that make a person, the one who he/she thought of one day being. It shows how people tend to change and our passions change, just as fast as the seasons change. We are always becoming, being, inventing ourselves anew, because as individuals we each try to be the best picture we see inside our heads.
Its My Life By: Bon Jovi This ain't a song for the brokenhearted No silent prayer for the faith departed And I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd You're gonna hear my voice when I shout it out loud It's my life It's now or never I ain't gonna live forever I just wanna live while I'm alive (It's my life) My heart is like an open highway Like Frankie said, "I did it my way" I just wanna live while I'm alive 'Cause it's my life | This song reflects the transcendental idea of individualism because the song is centered around the songwriter's life. The song also talks about not living forever and that he just wants to live while he is alive. It speaks of being an individual among a huge crowd, sticking out like a sore thumb, because their is only one chance anyone gets to live their life. After all it is now or never.
