FC: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? | Frances Faith Skinny Genes
My music video both challenges and conforms to conventions of existing pop music videos. I did this through mise-en-scene, camera shots, editing and narrative. I have challenged the conventions of pop music videos by having only one actor in my music video as the narrative and the performer. Most pop music videos have several actors in their music videos one as the narrative and others as the performers. An example of this that i found when researching pre-existing music videos is Lady Gaga - poker face.
Challenges | I decided to challenge some of the typical conventions of pop music videos. I did this by using only one actor in my video who was both the narrative and the performer. Whereas most pop music videos have separate actors for narrative and performance. Another way i have challenged conventions of existing pop music videos is bu using natural environments to film some of the scenes. Most pop music videos are in filmed grand and luxury settings or studios. I also challenged typical conventions of pop music videos by having a humorous and flirty element in my music video whereas a lot of pop music videos have a more soppy and scripted vibe.
Narrative | My target audience is primarily young girls aged 16-26. This is why i chose a young girl to be my actor and narrative so that it is a similar age to the audience. The narrative which i created is relative to my target audience and follows the conventions of existing pop music videos. I have followed these conventions by having a protagonist character. Having this character follows the conventions and allows the audience to relate to the lyrics and the artist.
Camera shots and angles | I have used a range of shots and angles to make the video more interesting and exciting to reflect the upbeat and fun vibe of the song. | This is a close up shot. I used a close up shot to focus on her facial expression so that the audience could see what emotion she is portraying and focus on the words she is saying. This type of shot is often used in pop music videos because it allows the audience to connect with the actor. | I used this long shot to show the actors outfit and the natural setting. This is also a common shot used in pop music videos as a key element in pop music videos is mise-en-scene. However i am challenging the typical pop conventions by the contrast of the modern actor with her outfit and the natural background setting.
I used a high angle in this shot as i wanted to show the artists vulnerable side as well as the playful side. I did this so that my target audience of young girls aged 16-26 would relate to the artist and also to connect with the idea and message behind the song which is that young girls should be confident with or without a man which is what the artist portrays in the video and which is why i chose to develop this idea by having just the one actor in my video rather than the typical convention of showing the man as well. | I used this mid shot so that the audience are at eye level with the artist and the artist is looking straight at the camera, connecting with the audience and creating a direct mode of address. Again, this is another shot that is typically used in pop music videos such as Jessie J's 'who you are' video.
Editing | I have used editing techniques to transition some of the clips to make the video more diverse and interesting. This challenges the conventions of typical pop music videos as most pop music videos are fast pace and have little to no video transitions. Here i have used the video transition 'cross dissolve' to slow down the video and go into the next clip. I used this to make the video more interesting and come together in a more flowing way to break up the fast pace parts of the song where there are no transitions. Again, this is challenging the typical conventions of pop music videos.
I also have used the transition 'zoom' on the clip of her whistling to enhance to fast pace and fun vibe of the song and to make the audience feel that and gain more interest. This is not something that is typically used pop/indie-pop videos therefore i am challenging the typical conventions. When asking my target audience for feedback i received positive comments on the editing techniques i had used such as he cross dissolve and zoom.
