Discovery Try 1 October 31, 2010 - November 3, 2010 After a drive to the airport, including a phone delivery by Joel and Alissa, we were off. Robin Chantker, Dave Schuster and I were one group, and we were meeting Johnny Hunter and Jeff Carter who were staying down the road from us. A rented Ford Fusion, two days at Kennedy Space Center, a rainy day at Universal-Orlando Islands of Adventures and no shuttle launch highlighted this amazing mini-Vacation! | Discovery Try 2... & we have Lift Off! February 23- February 27, 2011 Returning to Florida with Robin, we were determined to see STS-133 lift off. None of the others could join us but Nick Glover took their place. February 24th at 4:53pm, Discovery's 39th and final mission launched from pad 39A. It was an amazing feeling to see live heroes go into the final frontier. While we rested on Friday, we headed at night to Downtown Disney and then on Saturday to Epcot!
This Halloween Night, our first in Florida, we went to a local on the water bar and had wonderful meals. The seafood was fresh and view amazing. We also made sure we knew our geography of the "Space Ghost...coast to coast."
November 1st, 2010: A Day at NASA's Kennedy Space Center
Home of the free...Because of the Brave
 The Rocket Garden!
One of the best ways to see Kennedy Space Center is with their multi-hour bus tour. It gave us a panoramic view of the space shuttle launch pads, with Discovery on the LC-39 from the Observation Gantry and marvel at a massive moon rocket at the Apollo/Saturn V Center.
The Vehicle Assembly Building: One of the largest buildings in the world, it is where NASA basically puts together the shuttle. SRBs+Orbiter+External fuel tank = Space Shuttle!
This was to be the next major project for NASA with the Space Shuttles coming to an end, Constellation. We were to go back to the moon and land on Mars. This program was defunded by President Obama and will not be. Luckily, Project Orion, the mission to Mars, is still on tap.
A dream of mine for as long as I can remember has been to see the space shuttle- that first transport to the stars. As we drove along the Bus Tour you could see the shuttle Discovery get closer and closer. I was beyond excited and almost into tears. It is not often one gets to actually fulfill a dream. Just by seeing her live with my own eyes- I did!
As beautiful as all this was. The photo below shows our common theme.
