FC: The South 2011

1: Saturday Sept. 24. Camped along the ship channel, Pleasure Island, Port Arthur, Texas The campground we looked for in Sabine Pass, "Blew away in the hurricane and ani't been rebuilt."

2: Sept. 24 Holly Beach area, Louisiana Many, many lots for sale with nothing but foundations left

3: Sept. 24 The ferry, "Acadia", across the Calcasieu ship channel to Calcasieu Lake | Looking through our "lovebug" smeared windshield. We finally went to a car wash to get rid of the mess. | Looking down the channel towards the Gulf. | "Lovebug"-there were swarming clouds of them mating.

4: Sept. 24 Water lilies and first gators, along state highway 82 near Grand Chenier, Louisiana

5: Sept. 24 Rockefeller State Wildlife Refuge where we got busted by a Louisiana game warden for taking pictures without a hunting or fishing license. No citations issued. | The gators were hanging around trying to steal bait from the men fishing for crabs using chicken necks and legs. When one crab fisherman was ready to leave he threw his bait to a waiting gator, who caught it with practiced ease.

6: The fishermen told me that there had been a lot of larger gators at this location before gator season, which had just closed.

8: Sunday Sept. 25 Stopped and waited in line with a happy crowd at a French bakery in St. Martinsville | St. Martinsville cemetery

9: Champagne Swamp Tour, Lake Martin

10: Swamp cypress | Small floating plants make the water look like solid ground

12: Breaux Bridge Wonderful Cajun shrimp lunch at Chez Jaqueline and a little antiquing.

13: Monday Sept. 26 Stopped for a picnic lunch at Fairfield-Riverside State Park, Louisiana. Admired the oak trees at the Otis House and watched an egret hunting.

14: Tuesday Sept. 27 Fort Gaines State Park and Dauphin Island, Alabama

15: Wednesday-Friday Sept. 28-30 | Gulf State Park, Alabama | Beachcombing, handling baby alligators at the nature center and avoiding the stranded jellyfish

16: Friday-Saturday Sept. 30-Oct. 1 Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida Panhandle

18: Saturday Oct. 1 Mexico Beach, Florida-beach houses colored like Jordan almonds

19: Presnell's Bayside RV Park fishing camp

20: Sunday Oct. 2 St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, Florida

21: Oct. 2 Area of Apalachicola Anhingas and pelicans Common buckeye and gulf fritillary

22: Oct. 2 Lunch at Fathom's Steam Room in Carrabelle, remembering the motorcycle rally in Panama City, then camped at Rocky's in Perry, Florida

23: Monday Oct. 3 Micanopy,a wonderful place for feather glass

24: Monday-Tuesday Oct. 3-Oct. 4 Payne's Prairie State Park, Micanopy, Florida Squirrels, Spanish moss and an American beauty bush

25: Wednesday Oct. 5 Stephen C. Foster State Park, Georgia | I asked, "Do you have any alligators here?"

26: Thursday Oct. 6 Okefenokee Swamp Tour Alligators are actually quite shy

28: Saturday-Sunday Oct. 8-9 Along the Natchez Trace National Parkway in Mississippi Mount Locust and its slave graveyard

29: Sunday Oct. 9 Carpenter Gothic church in Grand Gulf Military Park, Mississippi, yellow-bellied slider turtles and kudzu

30: Sunday Oct. 9 Dugdemona River at Joyce, Louisiana | Wednesday Oct. 12 Gayfeather in Brownwood Lake State Park, Texas

31: Thursday Oct. 13 Monahans Sandhills State Park, Texas

32: Friday Oct. 14 Abandoned church at Hachita, New Mexico
