FC: Holden's Scrapbook

“yeah. She wouldn’t move any of her kings. Whatd she do, when she’d get a king, she wouldn’t move it. She’d just leave it in the back row. She’d get them all lined up in the back row. Then she’d never use them. She just liked the way they looked when they were all in the back row.” (31) | Holden learns that his roomate is going on a date with someone he had feelings for. he describes when he would play checkers with her and she would always put the kings in the back row.

“Up home we wear a hat like that to shoot deer in, for Chrissake,” he said. “That’s a deer shooting hat.” “Like hell it is.” I took it off and looked at it. I sort of closed one eye, like I was taking aim at it. “This is a people shooting hat,” I said. “I shoot people in this hat.” (22) | The red hunting hat symbolizes a sense of security that Holden has when he puts it on. He also wears it throughout a majority of the novel.

“There was this record I wanted to get for Pheobe, called “Little Shirley Beans.” It was a hard record to get.” | Other than Allie, his little brother, Pheobe, his sister is probably one of the only other people he likes.

“’Let’s go ice-skating at radio city!’ That’s the kind of ideas she always had. ‘Ice-skating at radio city? You mean right now?’”(128) | Holden goes on a date with Sally and goes ice-skating with her at radio city. He then gets irritated with her and leaves, but it is definitely a turning point in the story for Holden.

“The thing Jesus really would’ve liked would be the guy that plays the kettle drums in he orchestra. I’ve watched that guy since I was about eight years old. (138) | Once again Holden remembers something that he did with Allie. Showing how much he cares about his brother.

“he wrote this terrific book of short stories, The Secret Goldfish, in case you never heard of him. The best one in it was ‘the secret goldfish.’” (1) | In the first page of the book, holden tells the reader how his older brother is an author. This is one of the only things he really brags about in the novel.

“We were going to take our lunches and all, and our BB guns-we were kids and all, and we thought we could shoot something with our BB guns. (98) | Before Allie dies, Holden remembers an time where he left to go with a friend and didnt bring him long. In the novel, he tells the readers he regrets not bringing him.

"The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody’d move. . . . Nobody’d be different. The only thing that would be different would be you." | This quote symbolizes Holden's cynical nature. He remembers the class trips he went on to the museum, and doesnt want to go in because he would different.

“The reason I was standing way up on Thomsn Hill, instead of down at the game, was because I’d just got back from new York with the fencing team. I was the goddam manager of the fencing team. Very big deal. (2)” | When Holden is watching the game from a hill nearby, he briefly indicates that he was just in new york with the fencing team, which seems like the only thing he really tries at.
