2: It all started in Spain with the Visigoths. Just in case you were wondering the Visigoths were people who strongly believed in Christan religion in 622.
3: The Visigoths had all of Spain believing in the Christian religion. Spain was also a part of the Roman Empire.
4: Then in 711 there was fighting going on between the Visigoths. The Muslims saw this and decided to attack and try to take the Roman Empire over and make it Muslim land. | They are Visigoths | People who strongly believed in The Christian Belief
5: But before the fight in 622 the Muslims wanted to expand there caliphate (an area the leader of the Muslims controlled). They started in the Middle East and were moving toward Spain.
6: So now that we are back at the fight. The Visigoths put up a good fight but the Muslims had a bigger army so after several years of fighting the Muslims Won the fight. | The Muslims fighting the Visigoths.
7: For the next 500 years Spain was in Peace being a Muslim area, and Spain was called al-Andalus. There was also very good trade while under Muslim ruling. Muslims also very much enjoyed music, art, architecture. | The orange was Muslim land.
8: Now that that the Muslims were in charge they started making Spain a Muslim area. The Muslims even built a big mosque ( Muslim Church) | Inside the Muslim mosque.
9: Religion was respected under Muslim ruling in fact on the leaders or caliph deathbed he made his successor swear to respect other religions.
10: But in the early 1000's the Muslim caliphate was starting too shrink, and some states were broken off from the main empire.
11: The very strong believing Christians saw this and wanted to make the Muslims weaker. They wanted Spain to become Christian once again.
12: The name of the movement was the Reconquista or Reconquest because they wanted to re-conquer Spain. After 407 years the Christians slowly gained more land because they changed their fighting strategies, so they were winning more battles.
13: Finally in 1269, there was only one little area left Muslim called Granada. But on January 2, 1492 Granada was Christian. After the Reconquista Muslims and Jews either had to convert to Christianity or be exiled.
14: Some left and some pretended to convert and where always afraid that they would be discovered and punished.At this time King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella were proud rulers of Spain, because they got married so that they could own all of Spain.
15: Due to all the fighting Spain was poor from feeding to soldiers, building hospitals, homes for the soldiers, buying expensive weapons they were running low on money. So when Christopher Columbus came asking for three ships to sail with they said yes.
16: Now if Christopher found a new route to Aisa they would be rich. But to their surprise Christopher ran into America and made them out of their mind rich. Spain was one of the richest countries. | Christopher Columbus
