FC: I Love Me!!! What Makes Me Special?

1: As she sat in her room all alone on her bed, thoughts of what she didn't like about herself ran through her head. | "I have a small head and my nose looks like a beak, sometimes the only thought in my head is ... I'm such a freak!" | Little Sally Barker sat in her room as lonely as could be...wishing for some friends to end her misery.

2: As she laid her head down on her pillow and began to cry, a small flash of light caught her eye. | "what was that? What did i just see? Was it for real or was my mind tricking me?"

4: Then a sweet little voice spoke to Sally, as clear as day."No, Dearie your eyes are doing ok... I'm here to help you see yourself another way. | "Another way? What do you mean? It's not like I have a two heads or my skin is green!" | Sally shook her head not quite sure what she had heard or seen and then replied.

6: Then the little voice said,"You're right about that, there is no doubt! I'm hear to show you how to see yourself from the inside out!" | Inside out??? Sally grimaced, as she imagined seeing her insides exposed for the whole world to see..."I think I'm going to be sick, please excuse me!"

8: Quick as a flash she ran for the door, as she reached the bathroom the food in her stomach hit the floor. | After a moment Sally returned to the room,but she didn't look quite well. As she approached her bed in a heap she fell.

10: The little voice said,"Let's make this quick, cause your still looking quite sick and I don't wish to detain you much longer, this isn't about your “literal” insides, its something quite a bit stronger. Each person is made of more than flesh and bones, they have a spirit that is part of them too, now that is the piece we need to reach that's deep inside of you.. It's the inner workings of who you are and what makes you uniquely you, so please pay attention to where I'm trying to get you to."

12: "Are you an excellent reader or writer? Maybe the world's best Boogeyman fighter? Are you kind or caring? Or a person who loves sharing? Are you a whiz at math? Or do you never take a bath? What is it that makes you, you? Do you love to ride the bus? Or visit your uncle Gus? Is your favorite color green? Or did you donate your spleen? What is it that makes you, you?" Sally smiled real wide as she dug deep inside looking for just what the little voice had said, then all of a sudden a light came on in her head.

14: Sally exclaimed, “I think I finally understand! Its how I go out of my way, to lend others a hand. I’m really kind to my neighbors and try to do them lots of favors.. I’m also nice to my brother and always obey my mother. My favorite color in all the world is red, I also seem to enjoy most things that other kids tend to dread. I don’t really dance but given a chance, I’ll sing till my throat turns sore, and if I hear the words “encore’’, I’ll even sing some more. I’m really good at math and I never get lost on a path. I always try to do my best, especially in school during a test."

16: Sally asked the voice, “Are these the things you mean, is this what you had in mind??” The voice replied, “Yes it is dear, now concentrate to see what else you can find. The more you learn to see in yourself, the more others will see too. That is the ultimate lesson I’ve been trying to teach to you.” If you can learn to like yourself, it will make it easier for others to like you too and then maybe you’ll find that special friend or even a few.”

18: If you were like little Sally Barker and a voice spoke to you, could you find at least 5 things that make you special too? Since the story was done in rhyme, I want you to take the time , to rhyme your answers too, tell me at least 5 special things you see, inside of you. The story won't be complete with a picture or illustration of some kind, so get to work and see what you can find! The next several pages are a sample for you to explore, hopefully they will give you an idea of just what I'm looking for...

19: Everyone's life is different, there's so much to share, that makes them unique and really quite rare!

20: I am unique, there is no one like me, what makes me special?...Read my book and let's see!

21: Over my brown eyes, I wear glasses...they help me to see the board in my classes!

22: I have brown skin and dark hair...I am also generous and like to share.

23: My son, my daughter, my mom and me,together make up my family!

24: One of my favorite colors is blue, regardless to the shade or hue.

25: I like reading! Reading books is so much fun...I think VC Andrews is author number 1!

26: Creativity is one of the gifts I've been given, so in a field I can express that, is where I'll make a livin'.

27: I want to be a teacher because...Working with kids is something I enjoy, I love to to see the wonder in the eyes of each girl and boy .

28: I love to laugh and have lot's of fun! My happiest days are when there is plenty of sun!

29: I shared some things I've found to be special about me...Now look at yourself, how many of your own do you see?

30: The Objectives for this project are: 1) To give the 4th graders a chance to practice their written communication skills. The students will be able to communicate their ideas and share information about themselves through creative writing. 2) To give the 4th graders a chance to apply what they have learned about grammar and the mechanics of writing. 3)To give the 4th graders a chance to explore who they are and what they like about themselves. The students will hopefully leave the project with a more positive image of self. The Procedures for this project are: 1) To send a letter home to the parents telling them about the project we are working on, explaining the purpose, procedure and how the books will be shared during a class open house. 2) To share a story about a child having a difficult time seeing the qualities that make her unique and special.

31: 3) To get the children to think about what makes them unique and special. 4) To get the children to list the qualities that make them unique. 5) To then get the children to write about their unique qualities in a creative format of rhyming. 6)To have the children either use pictures or drawings to illustrate their "story" The Assessments for this project are: 1) Having the children share their "books" with their parents to get their input. 2)Having the children's "books" on display during class open house.
