BC: China 2010 | " The needs are great, and none of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful." -Mother Teresa
Our First Day | We brought lots of baby formula! | Sunrise from the airplane...a great start to a 13 hour flight! | The house where we lived. The 'Big House' | One of our pilots to Beijing was our neighbor, Pam!
On our first weekend in China, we visited The Forbidden City in Beijing, with some of the English students from New Day.
Chinese nationals were asking Laney to have pictures taken with them! | More of The Forbidden City | Chinese restaurant!
Beijing | Lois,(from New Day), Chelsey, me and Kelli, our team leader. | These were fried potatoes! | Outside of church in Beijing.
Laney and Chelsey in the 'dirt market'...a very hot day! | Our shoe shelf at New Day...you have to take off your shoes when you come in! | A 'squatty' potty | The team!
We visited foster homes in the village... | ...these families are fostering children from New Day until they are adopted. | We brought care packages with toys and clothes for each child.
More foster home visits... | below is Jack, who has a medical condition called 'club' hands. It didn't interfere with his playing cars! | above is Wong Shu, who sees over all foster homes. | Anna Kate, Laney and Chelsey just watching the rain.
Time to go to work! | Laney and Chelsey rode 'a' bike to work at the Healing Home. | I worked in the English school at New Day. | Mike, an audiologist on our team, checked hearing all week.
Laney and Chelsey had an amazing time working in the Healing Home, which is for children who are either awaiting surgery or recovering from surgery.
At the Healing Home, Laney fell in love with a little baby named Kiah. Also, here are the girls in the Forever Home (top left). They are getting older, almost too old for adoption, so an American couple who work at New Day are fostering the girls...possibly 'forever'.
This is Vincent to the left. He is an adorable little boy with a magical personality. He was always smiling or making funny faces! | These are children all over the New Day campus, including the 'in-house' foster home, and the Healing Home.
To the right is Deborah and William, who live in a foster home in the village. William served us juicy watermelon when we visited them. When our team leader, Kelli, saw William 2 yrs before, he could only lay on the floor and could not even hold his up, due to his severe Hydrocephalus. Now, he is happy, energetic, healthy 3yr old!
We took the English students on a field trip to a real 'Texas' style BBQ restaurant in Beijing, owned by a real Texan! It was a treat for all of us! | There was a 'costume night' for the English students, and us....which we had no costumes, only makeup to work with!
This is my new friend George, one of the English students. | Why didn't anyone tell me my eyeshadow was so bright?
I celebrated my birthday while we were in China! The team surprised me with a cake, and a beautiful flowering candle! A few of the English students even gave me gifts! | Even Pizza Hut was a little different!
These are some sights around New Day... | Lots of people get around in China on bicycle... | Laney, Chelsey and Anna Kate cleaned everyday, while the children were napping! | The girls' room...we all slept in bunk beds.
This is two of our favorite people in the village...the chicken-on-a-stick lady and the bread man. Mmmmm.... | This village is about a 10 min walk from New Day. It is a very busy little town. Street vendors set up every day with everything from raw meat to clothes. | Qingyundian Township, Daxing District
We got a chance to visit the Great Wall. | This was an amazing sight! Look how high we are! | We had to ride up the mountain to the top of the Wall on a ski lift...it was very scary for me! I squeezed Laney's hand the whole time!
More at the Great Wall... this is my new friend, Janie. | Some students from New Day went with us....some of them had never been to the Wall before.
This is the toboggan ride, to get down the mountain.
Some last memories of our visit to China... | ...headed back home to America. | Some really interesting cuisine... | 'bargain' shopping in Beijing... | Saying our goodbyes as we were leaving New Day...
