3: Mesopotamia is located in the Fertile Crescent. Priests held a high place in the Sumerian society. People first started settling in Mesopotamia before 4500 B.C. The written language used in Mesopotamia by the Sumerians was cuneiform. | The Sumerian people of Mesopotamia were polytheistic. The Sumerians created city-states. The Sumerians utilized the plow for farming. The Tigris and the Euphrates rivers run through Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia had few natural resources. Hammurabi was a Mesopotamian ruler that set up a series of laws known as Hammurabi's code.
5: The Egyptians invented the writing system of hieroglyphics. Flooding of the Nile brought fertile soil in Egypt. Egyptians worshiped the Nile as a god. The Egyptians used irrigation to water crops. The southern region of Egypt was called Upper Egypt. Pharaohs were Egyptian kings that were also seen as gods and were considered separate from and better than regular people. Egyptians used a process called mummification to preserve bodies. The Egyptians worshiped more than 2000 gods and goddesses. Egyptians put their rulers in tombs called pyramids. Egyptians enslaved Hebrew people. Egypt had a hot, dry climate.

7: The Indus civilization was located between the Indus and the Ganges rivers. The Indus civilization had a strong central government. Hinduism began in the Indus civilization. The people of the Indus river valley developed a system of writing. | Evidence suggests there were no major social divides among the people. The Indus people utilized a plumbing system. To the north of the Indus river valley are the Himalayas. The first planned cities were done by the Indus people. The Harappan culture developed in the Indus river valley. The Harappans traded with people in Afghanistan, and Persia.
9: China is surrounded by natural barriers including desert, mountains and ocean. China was ruled by dynasties. The Chinese believed the spirits of ancestors had powers. A system of writing using characters was employed in China. Chinese people were divided into nobles and peasants. The Yangtze and Yellow rivers flow through China. The Chinese were skilled in bronze and iron working. China was invaded from the west and north a number of times. Chinese women were treated as inferior to men. The Shang were a people that eventually rose to power in China.
