FC: American Imperialism | By Dakota Miksa and Michael Paulocsak
J= | Imperialism is when one country invades another for economic reasons. They also do so for military reasons such as being able to make naval and army bases. Another reason is the belief that some races are better than others and the spread of Christianity.
Spanish -American War | The Spanish-American war started in 1898 and was fought between the Spanish and the Americans. It started because of mainly three reasons: the explosion of the USS Maine, yellow journalism, and US's investment in Cuba's sugar industry.
Panama Canal | The Panama Canal is a gap between North and South America. It joins the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is considered one of the largest and most difficult engineering jobs ever accomplished. The way through the canal drastically shortened the previous route that ships took.
Open Door Policy | Open door policy is when it allowed all trading nations access to the Chinese market. Then John Hay decided yo have equal trading rights to all nations in all parts of China. Challenges such as Chinese nationalist resorted to armed opposition in an attempt to end foreign deals to other countries but ended up not working.
Boxer Rebellion | The boxer rebellion was and anti colonialist and anti christian movement in northern China lead by the "Righteous Fists of Harmony" (in English this translated to "boxer" so that is why it was called the Boxer Rebellion). It was in response to imperialist expansion, political invasion, economic manipulation, and missionary evangelism.
The difference between Roosevelt's and Taft's foreign policies was that Taft wanted Dollar Diplomacy and Roosevelt wanted to make the country a global power. Also, Taft wanted to further the economic development of less developed nations of Latin America andAsia thought American investment and Roosevelt was the complete opposite of that. Finally, they did both have something in common which was Taft's and Roosevelt's main goal was the same which was to have world peace. | Theodore Roosevelt's and William Taft's foreign Policy
Success of Imperialism | I think that Imperialism is alright as long as the country being imperialized is fine with it. Many times countries are not and it causes conflict, like in the Boxer Rebellion. Governments also sometimes form alliances and they set up military bases in each other's countries. This allows them to have soldiers in other countries and have an "eye" on that part of the world.
