FC: ATrip | to remember | Europe Fall 2011
In September of 2012, we took a trip to Europe. It had been about 40 years since either of us had been there. In the past, Tim had gone with a church group right after high school and they traveled in Volkswagen vans throughout Europe. Chris had gone with a girlfriend right after college graduation and they traveled on trains throughout Europe. We chose four parts of Europe to explore. We were able to spend three days in Munich, Germany; three days in Prague, Czech Republic: three days in Venice Italy; and five days on a cruise in the Adriatic Sea, visiting Koper, Slovenia; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Bari and Ravena ,Italy. We had a wonderful time. | Munich

Outside of Munich | We took a bus trip outside of Munich and went to Schloss Nymphenberg Palace (bottom three pictures); Linderhof Palace (left and above) ; and to Obergammerau (upper right and right). We also went to see the famous Neuschwanstein Castle (on cover ) outside of Munich. This is the castle that was used as the idea for the Disneyland Castle.
Prague | After three days in Munich we traveled by way of train to Prague. The scenery was beautiful. As we left Bavaria, we noticed the increase of graffiti on buildings, etc. Prague has lots of graffiti.Prague is a beautiful city with wonderful architecture, statues, gardens, castles, and really good beer. We spent three full days here and just about walked the entire city. When we didn't walk, we used public transportation. It was very efficient. The pictures on the right pretty well represent Prague. The picture on the left page is of the St.Charles Bridge. If you look away from the bridge you will see the largest of the castles in Prague.
After three days in Prague, we flew to Venice. We stayed two nights in Venice and then boarded a cruise ship for a 5 day cruise and returned to Venice for one more night. This page and the next two are pictures we took while in Venice. | Venice
This is one of the islands outside of Venice that we visited. This island is known for it's blown glass. On the left is a picture of the center of the island. The right are two examples of blown glass art. | These bottom pictures are from the island of Burano. This island is known for it's colorful houses and hand made lace. The picture on the right is the sunset when we were leaving Burano | Murano | Burano
The Cruise | We boarded the cruise ship in Venice and traveled in the Adriatic Sea visiting four seaside cities. We went to Koper, Slovenia; Dobrovnic, Croatia; Bari, Italy; and Ravenna, Italy. We ended our cruise back in Venice. From there we headed home.
Koper | Slovenia | This was our first cruise stop. Koper is Slovenia's only commercial port and one of the oldest towns. We really liked it here. It was clean , quaint and very relaxed. Because it was a Sunday, many of the stores were closed and the locals gathered at the beach.
This was our second stop on the cruise. Ravenna is known for it's Byzantine mosaics. By the time we arrived, we were so tired of seeing "old" things. We decided we could walk to the central town, but we were so wrong. We ended up walking about 6 miles on a two way road and also using the railroad tracks when the road got busy. Eventually we found a bus to take us into town. Ravenna was briefly the capital of the Roman Empire | Ravenna | Italy
Bari | Italy | Bari is an ancient Roman city with a wonderful old castle. The castle was built in 1031 by Roger the Norman. Later it was destroyed by William the Bad in 1056. But later Frederick II restored it. On this last day, we were so tired from our trek in Ravenna,, we pretty much just toured the castle.
 Dobrovnik | Croatia
Dobrovnik | We spent most of the day inside the old walls of the city of Dobrovnik. The picture on the previous page was taken from top of one of the hills bordering Dobrovnik. We were able to take a tram to th top of he hill.
When we travel, we like to go to farmer's markets and other types of grocery places. These seemed to catch our eyes. | Dragon Fruit | Spices | Olives | Sausages | Cabbage | Mussels | Peaches soaked in wine
We've thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Souvenirs are bought, memories are stored. We are looking forward to coming home ! | Eating squid ink pasta | Enjoying Mussels | Trying meat skewers with fried onions | Enjoying a nice meal in Venice | Odds and Ends
