S: Teaching Christ Like Attributes

FC: Teaching Children Christlike Attributes By Kimberly Wynn

Inspiration for this comes from the following sources: 1- A conference talk in April 2011 by Elder Lynn G. Robbins 2- Preach My Gospel pg.115 3 -My desire for a Christ centered home. Just like all parents, I want my children to love and respect others. These are a few of many ways to teach the attributes of Christ. Thankfully, the Lord guides us when we seek his help!

This is How it Works 1- Pick an attribute. 2- Study and learn together what it means, and how to live or achieve it. Take 1 week or 1 month to study it. 3- Memorize a scripture that goes with it. Try repeating it at dinner, while driving in the car, or bedtime. 4- Remind them each day to live or look for the attribute. Pray for it! 5- At night share any experiences you've had living this attribute. Example- Were you honest when you took your test today?, Did you pray for guidance today? 6- Write down your experiences in a journal. | 3

Faith What is Faith? Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Alma 32:21 "Faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true." Matt. 17:20 "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove." Faith is acting each day on things you hope for even before you know the ending. It is a trust or confidence in God. It is believing or knowing that God is real. With faith you will be able to replace fear and doubt with hope. You can accomplish anything according to the Lord's will. Faith is confidence, courage, trust and strength. It guides decision making, and demonstrates the nature of God. | 4

How do we develop faith? Romans 10:17 "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." "Faith is a choice, and it must be sought after and developed. Thus, we are responsible for our own faith. We are also responsible for our lack of faith. The choice is yours." Richard Edgley, General Conference Oct. 2010 Nurture your faith by studying the scriptures, praying, keeping the commandments, serving others, obeying the Holy Ghost, and becoming acquainted with Jesus Christ and his teachings. Faith is like a muscle, it must be exercised to grow. If left alone it will become weak. Once I decided to read a scripture each day about faith. I started in the topical guide, and marked each scripture with a colored pencil after I read it. The result was amazing. I learned so much about faith and mine increased. Read Alma 32:26-43 then try it! Consider this a beginner exercise to increase the faith muscle. Whenever we work towards a goal we are exercising faith. It shows our hope in something that we cannot yet see. | 5

Now Go and Exercise Faith! How did faith help you face today's challenges? Did you see the hand of the Lord in your life today? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | 6

 Write down your families experiences | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 7

Hope What is Hope? Alma 34:41 - “have patience, and bear with . . . afflictions, with a firm hope that ye shall one day rest from all your afflictions” Moroni 7:42 "Wherefore, if a man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope." It is believing that something will happen. Hope in Christ means you trust he will fulfill His promises to you. I find that when I have hope I am more patient, confident, optimistic, enthusiastic, and happy. The word hope is sometimes misunderstood. In our everyday language, the word often has a hint of uncertainty. For example, we may say that we hope for a change in the weather or a visit from a friend. In the language of the gospel, however, the word hope is sure, unwavering, and active. Prophets speak of having a “firm hope” (Alma 34:41) and a “lively hope” (1 Peter 1:3). As we study the scriptures and follow their teachings we will gain hope. | 8

What do we Hope for? Mormon taught us about hope - "And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise." Moroni 7:41 The Prophet Moroni taught, “Whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God” (Ether 12:4). The Apostle Paul taught, “Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4). In the Book of Mormon, a missionary named Aaron assured a Lamanite king, “If thou wilt repent of all thy sins, and will bow down before God, and call on his name in faith, believing that ye shall receive, then shalt thou receive the hope which thou desirest” (Alma 22:16) As we strive to live the gospel, we grow in our ability to “abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost” (Romans 15:13). | 9

Now go Hope for something! In what way were you hopeful today? How has a brighter hope helped you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------When you have hope, you work through difficulties/trials as if all things will work out and come together for your good. You will be confident, optimistic, enthusiastic, patient, and persistent. | 11

What does virtue mean? D&C 121:45 "...let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven." Virtue “is a pattern of thought and behavior based on high moral standards.” It encompasses chastity and moral purity. Preach My Gospel (2004), pg.118 " Virtue includes modesty—in thought, language, dress, and demeanor. Virtue provides an anchor on the path leading to our Heavenly Fathers presence. The path of virtue leads to happiness in this life and in the life to come. The path of virtue leads to strong families. The path of virtue contains the foundation stones for the blessings of eternity. It leads us to the temple. No wonder Joseph Smith said, “If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things” (Articles of Faith 1:13). - Elaine S. Dalton (New Era March 2009) People who are virtuous have a quiet dignity and confidence because they are worthy to have the Holy Ghost with them. | Virtue | 12

How do we live a virtuous life? We need only look around us to see what is taking place in our communities to realize that personal traits of virtue are in a steep decline. Reflect on the behavior of drivers on crowded highways; road rage happens all too often. Civility is all but absent in our political discourse. As countries around the world face financial and economic challenges, fidelity and honesty seem to have been replaced with greed and graft. A visit to a high school will often subject you to crude language and immodest dress. Some athletes display poor sportsmanship and seldom show humility unless publicly exposed for legal or moral infidelities. A large segment of our population feel little personal responsibility for their own temporal well-being. Some in financial distress blame bankers and lenders for loaning sums to satisfy insatiable wants rather than affordable needs. On occasion our generosity in support of good causes wanes as our appetite to acquire more than we need prevails. - H. David Burton Oct. 2009 GC Inner strength comes from living a virtuous life. Ask yourself this one question when you're reading books, listening to music, talking with friends, watching TV/movies, dealing with the public, etc: Will this strengthen my testimony of Christ? If not, walk away from it. President Monson has counseled: “You be the one to make a stand for right, even if you stand alone. Have the moral courage to be a light for others to follow. There is no friendship more valuable than your own clear conscience, your own moral cleanliness—and what a glorious feeling it is to know that you stand in your appointed place clean and with the confidence that you are worthy to do so” (“Examples of Righteousness,” Apr. 2008 general conference). | 13

How have you shown strength or virtue recently? Did you find strength in the Lord today?

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ | Virtue begins in the heart and mind. It is the accumulation of thousands of small decisions and actions. | 15

Knowledge | Why is Knowledge important? D&C 131:6 "It is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance." Proverbs 4:7 "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." D&C 88:118 "And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith." The Bible Dictionary says Knowledge is: One of the attributes of God (Isa. 46:9–10; Acts 15:18; 2 Ne. 9:20). Knowledge of divine and spiritual things is absolutely essential for ones salvation .... The scriptures, and also living prophets, are given so that the people might have knowledge of things of God and “know how to worship, and know what you worship” (D&C 93:19). Knowledge is one of the endowments of the Holy Ghost (John 14:26; 16:13; D&C 34:10; 121:26–33) and one of the gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:8; Moro. 10:10; D&C 46:18). It follows that the person who gains knowledge will have “the advantage in the world to come” (D&C 130:18–19). Knowledge includes understanding, learning, preparing. Through it we build our skills, abilities and talents. It is the fruit of hard work. | 16

How do we obtain Knowledge? Isaiah 28:10 " ...precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little." D&C 42:61 "If thou shalt ask, thou shalt receive revelation upon revelation, knowledge upon knowledge, that thou mayest know the mysteries and peaceable things - that which bringeth joy, that which bringeth life eternal." As you seek spiritual knowledge, search for principles. Carefully separate them from the detail used to explain them. Principles are concentrated truth, packaged for application in a wide variety of circumstances. A true principle makes decisions clear even under the most confusing circumstances. It requires effort to organize these simple statements of principle. The principles should form the foundational point for our more detailed study. I have identified a few of the key principles when acquiring spiritual knowledge. In humility, seek divine light. Exercise faith in Jesus Christ. Hearken to His counsel. Keep His commandments. President Ezra Taft Benson emphasized the importance of spiritual knowledge, saying,"We should make daily study of the scriptures a lifetime pursuit... The most important [thing] you can do... is to immerse yourselves in the scriptures. Search them diligently... Learn the doctrine. Master the principles.... You must .... see that .... searching the scriptures is not a burden laid upon [us] by the Lord, but a marvelous blessing and opportunity” (Ensign, Nov. 1986, p. 47). | 17

Now Go and Learn! How did you strengthen your testimony today? What new things have you learned while studying the gospel this week? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ | 18

Obedience | What is Obedience? Many people think of commandments as restrictions, limited, confining, something holding us back from fun. This is the opposite of what the commandments do. When we are obedient then we advance, achieve, develop, progress, and grow. One of my favorite stories of obedience is The Armies of Helaman. In the Book of Mormon it describes them as "True at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted". The 2,000 young men went to battle to defend their freedom. Not one of them was killed. The Lord watched over them because of their integrity. "Yea, they were men of truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him.” (Alma 53:20–21.) I am sure they were obedient with exactness. Exactness means not deviating from the truth. Just as those young warriors were rewarded for being righteous, we will also be blessed for being honest in all our dealings and remaining pure. 1 Nephi 2:3 "And it came to pass that he was obedient unto the word of the Lord, wherefore he did as the Lord commanded him." | 20

Why do we obey? Jesus answered this question when He said, “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father” (John 14:21). "I, the Lord, delight to honor those who serve me in righteousness and in truth unto the end” (D&C 76:5). Our obedience to the commandments is an expression of our love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Why can't we obey like Adam and Eve? They didn't understand everything but they had faith and trusted in the Lord. Moses 5:5-6 Ask yourself, why do I obey God’s commandments? Is it because we fear punishment? Is it because we desire the rewards for living a good life? Is it because we love God and Jesus Christ and want to serve Them? It is better to obey the commandments because we fear punishment than not to obey them at all. But we will be much happier if we obey God because we love Him and want to obey Him. When we obey Him freely, He can bless us freely. When we find it hard to obey we should remember Nephi's words, “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them” (1 Nephi 3:7). | 21

How have you been obedient recently? Did you choose your actions carefully today?

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ | Joseph Smith said, "I made this my rule, when the Lord commands, DO IT!"

Charity | What is Charity? Moroni 7:47 "But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him." The Bible dictionary describes Charity as - "The highest, noblest, strongest kind of love, not merely affection; the pure love of Christ. It is never used to denote alms or deeds or benevolence, although it may be a prompting motive." Imagine you have on a pair of glasses that helps you see charity. We could look at every problem, situation, every principle, every doctrine, and those lenses of charity would show us which choice to make. Our motives and intentions have to be pure, or uncontaminated. We don't care about our own well being or gain when we have the pure love of Christ for someone. Charity is a gift from God. It's like faith, it leads to action. You will develop charity as you look for opportunities to serve others and give of yourself. Paul taught the Corinthians all about charity in chapter 13-14. When we have charity it will motivate us to becoming a better person. | 24

How do we live it? Moroni 7:45 "And Charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things." See also 1 Corinthians 13:47 Your family is a great place to develop Charity. Start by following Christ's example and love as he did. We do this by showing mercy, having patience, sharing, demonstrating unfailing compassion and unconditional love. Christ is the perfect example of Charity. During his life he “went about doing good,” teaching the gospel and showing tender compassion for the poor, afflicted, and distressed (see Matthew 4:23; Mark 6:6; Acts 10:38). His crowning expression of charity was His infinite Atonement. This was the greatest act of long-suffering, kindness, compassion, love, and selflessness that the world will ever know. He said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). | 25
