Entry #1 February 16, 1992 Dear Journal, Hi, my name is Esperanza. I grew up in El Rancho de Rosas. My dad and I are always doing things together. He and my mom keep me working. Well today, my dad and I are going to the garden. And I was able to hear the Earth's heartbeat. It was silent. You could hear a petal drop. When we went home, I had my servant dress me and put me in bed. Fortunately, my dad owned the farm and I could have as many servants as I wanted. But, my papa was kind enough to give our servants a place to live. Now, I am 13 years old and I am glad my papa and mama are here with me. Tomorrow is my 14th birthday and I am so excited! Your Friend, Esperanza

It was for my dad. Last night when he was coming home, bandits robbed and killed him. I will never open my presents. Why? Why?! My father gave some of his land to help the poor. To bad the bandits only thought of him as a snobby rich guy who only cares about himself. Just why was it then? Why couldn’t he have stayed with me for my birthday? I loved him. And so did my mom. Hopefully he is safe in heaven. Anyway, today I have to toughen up and be a big girl. So, I put on my beautiful dress my servants designed for me. Ops. I forgot that I need to see my mother. Your Friend, Esperanza

Entry #3 February 24, 1992 Dear Journal, Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! The weirdest thing just happened to me and my mom. Ever since my dad died. My Tio Louis (uncle) has kinda taken over the farm. And because he is running for mayor, he wants to win. And before my dad died, he kinda made me feel invisible. But, he was just an uncle. Now, to him, my mom is really likable. So, today he proposed to my mom. She said she would never marry him. But he made a threat.......He said that if she didn’t marry him he would harm us in some way. He got me nervous. Tio Louis is a powerful man and now that he owns the farm. Brrrrr. He gives me the shivers. I wonder what he is going to do to us? Hopefully it is nothing to bad. Your Friend, Esperanza

___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ | Entry #4 April 2, 1992 Dear Journal, Well, here I am, in America, in disguise as Miguel’s cousin. It has been hard to cope with abuelita gone. Especially since there was a big dust storm. I was worried out of my mind for mama and the boys. But, luckily, they came home safely. Now mama is coughing and just not being the normal. We called the doctor, he said she had valley fever. When she is not used to the dust it gets into her lungs and can’t get out. She has to be kept in the hospital. And now that it is getting worse, she can’t have visitors. It has been about six months now and I haven’t seen her beautiful face. Each night I go to bed early and weep. Well now I have to sleep. Your Friend, Esperanza

Entry #5 January 3, 2002 Dear Journal, The best thing happened to me! Well, the doctor said that mama was healthy enough to come home! I am so happy! But something as happy as that happened! Miguel stoled my work money, but came back with a big surprise. He brought abuelita!!! I was about four years since we saw her. And when she was reunited with mama, there was silence and tears of joy. I was not able to talk, there was a knot of happiness inside of me. Everything in front of me was joy and love. Oh how I wished it could always be like this. The event, this event, was wonderful. I will keep it in my brain forever. Your Friend, Esperanza

Entry #6 July 4,2003 Dear Journal, Today, my friend Kiara will interview me. Okay! So, Esperanza, how did you feel when you found out that your mom was sick? I would ask Esperanza this because if my mom was sick and my dad died it would like a bullet in the heart. Did you actually like Miguel when you were older? I want to know because I think Miguel likes you. And do you regret telling him? This question because maybe he thought you were weird and didn’t talk to you. I would like to go swimming with Esperanza to see if she ever learned to swim. Also, I would love to crochet with her because I am not very good at it. Maybe she can teach me. Anyway, this would be an absolute fun day with the awesomest girl I know, Kiara. Your Friend, Esperanza
