January 23,2002 Dear diary, The most sad thing happened, my uncles reported that my father is dead! I cannot believe it! How can it happen that quickly? And right before my birthday? Why did those mean bandits have to kill my father? Papa was a kind wealthy man, the bandits would haven’t killed him if they knew that papa was a good man. This is the worst day of my life. My mom and I now have to live together without papa. I was very sad going to my dad’s funeral I felt if my life was over.I know it will be an obstacle to live without papa, but I will stay strong for papa to help mama and Abuelita. I dressed in a really nice dress. Preparations are almost over, until I heard the door knock, It was our friend who was carrying a bunch of cantaloupe because papa ordered it before he passed away. Papa’s friend still didn’t know he died, so I told him as my heart dropped down. Also, I found my present from papa it was always a doll and now I got a doll! I love it I’ll keep it always with me. Your Friend, Esperanza

January, 26,2002 Dear diary, Once I was a little kid I remember when my papa took me out near our garden. I was really young then. My dad and I both were playing in the grass as he put his head on top of the grass. He said that the earth breathes. Papa also told me to try hearing the earth breathe. I slowly laid my head on the green grass . I stopped for a second and couldn’t hear it I only heard the dry grass sway back and forth from the slight wind. I was furious because papa made it look, so easy by just laying on the ground with your head on the grass. Papa said to be quiet and and you will hear the earth breathe. I slowly put my head on the dry grass and heard a little thump which sounded like the earth breathing. The little thump made me feel good and made me feel like I wanted to hear all day long. After, that day I always thought of nature breathing. I was glad taught me that. A memory I will never forget. Your Friend, Esperanza

Once we arrived we saw Miguel’s family as we traveled to the camp. I saw many people from different places, Philippines, Japan, and Mexico which we are going to. At the cabin we all got ready to work tomorrow, I had to stay with Isabel and take care of the babies. I hated that I had to live in a small and dirty place like this, but my mom said this is better to live poor instead of mama being married to my uncle. Afterwards, mama went to work with the rest of the parents and I took care of Pepe and Lupe. Suddenly, a dust storm happened and mama got Valley fever and had to go to the hospital. Soon, mama was to sick that we can’t visit her anymore until 6 months past. I hope mama gets better I don’t want my mama to die like my papa did, I would have only Abuelita and she is not even here, I guess I have to pray for a miracle. Your Friend, Esperanza

Dear diary. Something happened it is not bad, but a miricale. Mama is much better and coming home! The doctor said to be careful because she could get it again. I was so joyful and glad that mama survived, now we just need Abuelita here. I know that Abuelita’s foot has healed by now. I just have to have to have enough money for Abuelita to came here. Ever the strike happened everything has been in a twist. When mama was well in her room, resting the rest of the family went on a train to pick up Abuelita. Once we arrived I hugged and was relieved that Abuelita is here. When we went home Abuelita taught Isabel how to crochet. It made me remember of how Abuelita taught me how to crochet. Your Friend , Esperanza

October 9,2004 Dear diary, This afternoon, I met a fan who is interested about my hard times when I lived in El Rosas de Rancho. Her name was Julia. She read my book and really wanted to meet me. I let her ask her questions. Do like to be poor with your family or live rich with your uncle Tio Louis? I would live poor wherever my family goes I always stay with them. My second question is would you like to live in El Rancho de los Rosas with your family or still live in the Migrant camp? I would live El Rancho de los Rosas, so we can peacefully with everyone. To have hot water and have a bigger place to stay. Thank you, Julia I hope you got the answers you wanted. Your Friend, Esperanza
