The surprise attach consisted of six Japanese force carriers with 424 planes, and a fleet of 30 ships. Casualties included 2,335 service men and 68 civilians, as well as the 1178 that were wounded. More than 180 US Aircraft were destroyed, and of the eight battleships that were attacked, all but the USS Arizona and Oklahoma were repaired and returned to service.
8: The USS Missouri was the 63rd, and last battle ship built for the US Navy. She was ordered in 1940, and was commissioned in 1944, to participate in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. She fought in the Korean war from 1950 to 1953, and was decommissioned in 1955. The ship was reactivated and modernized in 1984 as part of 600 ship Navy plan, and participated in Operation Dessert Storm Jan-Feg 1991. The USS Missouri was built to house 2700 to 3000 crew men during WWII and the Korean War; and, after modernization, was reduced to 1500 men. Despite being 108 feet and 3 inches wide, she has a history of successfully passing through the Panama Canal, which is only 110 feet wide. The USS Missouri serves as the "Instrument of Surrender", where General Douglas MacAurther officially accepted the surrender of Japan, ending WWII, on September 2, 1945. She is the Navy's last operating battleship, and was decommissioned for a second time in March of 1992. She resided in Bremeraton, WA for six years. In June of 1998, the USS Missouri began its final voyage, being towed to Pearl Harbor, where it sits next to the USS Arizona memorial.
