FC: KKK : Founded in 1866 by ex-Confederate soldiers and other Southerners opposed to Reconstruction after the Civil War.

 - An organization designed to retain power for whites and withhold power from blacks. Its original purpose was to be resistant to the Republican party, the Freed Men's Bureau, and Carpetbaggers. -These groups promised the freed slaves many things if they would vote Republican, while at the same time officials were turning down many white voters who served in the Confederate army or government. -They did not like this.

 - Violence and intimidation were tools of the Klan. | - Members wore hoods as disguises while committing their criminal acts.

In hoping for a better life, the Klan tried to deprive blacks from their recently given rights, in ways such as the Jim Crow laws, and strongly believed theories of white superiority and racial purity.

Eventually federal investigations led to prosecution and civil claims that severely decreased their influence.

The KKK is still secretly active in many areas of the South, but many of its members have moved into small splinter groups or other organizations.
