3: 1. Mesopotamia in Greek means " Land between the Rivers. " 2. The two rivers framing Mesopotamia are the Tigris and Euphrates. 3. People first began to settle and farm the flat, swampy lands in southern Mesopotamia before 4500 B.C. around 3500 B.C., the people called Sumarians. 4. Unpredictable flooding combined with a period of little or no rain. The land sometimes became almost a desert. 5. The Sumarians stand out in history as one of the first groups of people to form a civilization. 6. Mesopotamia's written language is cuneiform. 7. Sumer's earliest governments were controlled by the temple priests. 8. Sumarians described their gods as doing many of the same things humans do- falling in love, having children, quarreling, and so on. 9. Sumarians also believed that their gods were both immortal and all-powerful. 10. Sumarians built impressive ziggurats for them and offered rich sacrifices of animals, food, and wine.
4: 1. Egypt was united into a single kingdom, which allowed it to enjoy a high degree of unity, stability, and cultural continuity over a period of 3,000 years. 2. Every year in July, rains and melting snow from the mountains of east Africa caused the Nile River to rise and spill over its banks. 3. Ancient Egyptians lived along the Nile the mouth well into the interior of Africa. 4. Egypt created papyrus, which was the first writing paper. 5. Egypt has a theocracy government. 6. Egyptians believed that their king ruled even after death. 7. Egyptians believed in a sun god and a god of death and over 2,000 more. (polytheistic). 8. People of all classes planned for their burials, so that they might safely reach the other world. 9. The Nile provided a reliable system of transportation between Upper and Lower Egypt. 10. To the north, near the sea, Lower Egypt includes the Nile Delta region.
6: Indus Valley
7: 1. The Indus Valley is located between the Ganges and Indus rivers. 2. The civilization that emerged along the Indus River faced many of the same challenges as the ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations. 3. Indus Valley had a strong central government. 4. People's religion in the Indus Valley is Hinduism. 5. Indus Valley's language was very similar to hieroglyphics. 6. Seasonal winds called monsoons dominate India's climate. 7. The people of the Indus laid out their cities on a precise grid system. 8. Located south of the Himalaya Mountains, was the Indus Valley. 9. The Indus Valley is a subcontinent. 10. The Indus River provided an excellent means of transportation for trade goods.
8: 1. China's government established was feudalism. 2. The Chinese believed that the spirits of family ancestors had the power to bring good fortune or disaster to living members of the family. 3. In the Chinese method of writing, each character generally stands for one syllable or unit of language. 4. The Chinese saw their culture as the center of the civilized world. 5. The most important virtue about family was respect for one's parents. 6. China's two major river systems are the Yellow and Yangtze River. 7. One of the most important cities and oldest cities was Anyang. 8. The society was sharply divided between nobles and peasants. 9. Only 10% of China's land is suitable for farming. 10. Around 2000 B.C., some of the early settlements grew into China's first cities.
