FC: The Maze Runner

"A"ntagonists | The main antagonists in The Maze Runner are the creators (the people responsible for building the maze) and the grievers (monsters that lurk within the maze at night). Another antagonist in this book is Gally, a violent and unfriendly boy who bullies the main character.

"B"ooks | A young boy wakes up in a maze filled with other boys, but can't remember anything about himself, besides the fact that his name is Thomas. Thomas soon learns that none of the others can remember their lives before the maze, as they've all seemed to have certain aspects of their identities erased. The boys stay in a safe area of the maze which they call "The Glade," that becomes closed off from the monsters within the maze at night. Also, he discovers that none of the boys have even gotten close to finding a way to solve it in over two years. Thomas feels as though he's been in the glade before, and has a strong desire to explore the maze. However, everything changes when a girl is sent into the maze. This girl is the first girl ever to arrive into the maze, and she brings warnings that everything is about to change. Quickly, the Thomas and the other gladers realize how it is more important than ever to find a way out.

"C"limax | The climax in The Maze Runner is when the gladers (boys who live inside the maze) fight the grievers (monsters that prowl the outside maze at night) in a bloody, gruesome battle. This part of the story is a turning point for the main characters, as they are able to make an escape.

"D"escription Of Main Characters | Thomas- The key character in the book. He is brave, curious, resourceful, and intelligent. | Alby-The leader of the gladers. He is strong, short-tempered, and stern. | Minho- The leader of the maze-runners. Minho is fast, strong, quick-thinking, and hot-headed.

Newt- Alby's best friend and go-to-guy. He used to be a maze runner, but was injured and walks with a limp. | Teresa- The first and only girl ever to enter the maze. She is mysterious, smart, and strong-willed. | Chuck- Thomas' best friend. He is talkative, playful, and friendly.

"E"xposition | Location: The setting of The Maze Runner is deep inside a mysterious maze, that is placed in an unknown location. | Time: This book takes place in a post-apocalyptic future.

Characters: Thomas, Alby, Newt, Chuck, Teresa, Minho, Gally, the gladers, the grievers, and the creators are all important characters in this book.

"F"igurative Language | The Maze Runner uses many forms of figurative language, such as similes and imagery. | Examples: "With another jolt, the room jerked upward like an old lift in a mine shaft." Pg.) 1 "The fear was like icy dew on his skin." Pg.) 14 "...An intense feeling of dreadful anticipation hanging over them like a thick fog." Pg.) 89

"G"ive An Alternate Ending | An alternate ending to this book could be that the gladers are able to find an exit to the maze without having to go into the griever hole. This would mean that less gladers would die in the battle against the grievers. The gladers could make it back to their families and have their memories restored, without any conflict with the creators.

"H"eart To Heart | Dear Chuck, I am so sorry for how the other gladers treat you. It's sad to see how much they take you for granted, and that no one besides Thomas is civil towards you. On top of feeling useless and unwanted, you are also faced with the fear and confusion of being trapped inside the maze. It really isn't fair, and I understand what you must feel. This is why I have some advice on how to deal with the things you are going through. First of all, when it comes to how the other gladers treat you like you have no importance: I would just not worry about it. Everyone else in the maze is going through a difficult time as well, and are only venting their frustrations to the easiest person possible. Since you're one of the newest people in the maze, they feel as though you don't deserve to be treated fairly. This in no way means that they have a right to their actions. However, I do not think that their words spring from an actual dislike, but as a simple outlet. If it were me, I would concentrate on my daily tasks, as well as my happy friendship with Thomas. If you continue to be friendly to the others, I'm sure that they will come to accept you, and stop treating you badly. However, there are people like Gally in the glade, who are just cold by nature. Making friends with people like him may be a little difficult. That, however, does not mean that you are not a likeable, or important person. You play a big part in the upkeeping of the maze, and are a great friend and shoulder to Thomas. I hope that things get better for you, and that you are able to find your way out of the maze, and back to the home in which you came from. Sincerely, Sarah

"I"llustration | This is my illustration, which could be a possible book cover:

"J"ustify | I recommend that all teens read this book. The Maze Runner is a "must-read" in many different ways. For instance, its suspense makes it an engaging and interesting read. The twists and turns that the main characters must go through are completely unexpected. This book is also full of action, which helps add to its excitement and keeps the story-line from dragging and becoming weak.

The Maze Runner is well-written, and catches the reader almost instantly. The Maze Runner has important themes and morals within its text. These include lessons such as never giving up, looking for all possible answers, and the importance of teamwork. Also, the characters are easy to connect and emphasize with. Its use of figurative language creates scenery, which makes it an enjoyable book to read.

"K"now Your Book | 2. Q- What is the theme of the story? A- The theme of this book is to do everything possible in order to solve a problem. | 1. Q- What is the problem the antagonist is facing? A-The problem the antagonist is facing is that he is trapped inside of a dangerous maze, with no idea on how to escape. | 3. Q- Was the story easy to follow? A- The story had many intricate twists, and mature details, but overall was easy to understand. | 4. Q- What type of person would you describe the main character as? A- I would describe the main character as a brave, and honorable individual. | 5. Q- What genre would this book fall under? A- The Maze Runner is a Thriller. It is full of suspense, and has many twists and turns.

 6. Q- Are there any other books in The Maze runner series? A- Yes, there are three total books in the series. | 7. Q- What are the most important relationships in this book? A- The most important relationships in this book are between Thomas and Teresa, and Thomas and Gally. Gally is an apposing influence to Thomas, while Teresa helps him throughout the story. | 8. Q- Were there any faults or mistakes in the story? A- I was unable to find any errors. | 9. Q- Did the author use a large vocabulary in his style of writing? A- I felt as though the author used a developed sense of wording, but it was appropriate to the characters and story. | 10. Q- Were the characters dimensional? A- Yes. The characters in the story were all intricate, and had depth. especially The main Character, Thomas.

"L"essons Learned From The Book | One lesson that could be taken away from this book is the solutions to problems aren't the ones you were expecting. For example, when the gladers realize they were searching for an exit in the wrong place, and that the only way out is through the hole that the grievers disappear into at night.

"M"aking Personal Connections | I, myself, can make connections to the story. For example, in the way that Thomas has trouble to adjusting to his new life in the maze. I've been a new student at school before, and that is close to the same feelings of confusion that Thomas felt. I understand his overwhelming emotions and feelings of being unsure, as I had felt them before.

"N"arration | The point of view in which this story is told is Third Person Limited. This type of narration is effective because it lets you have insight to the main characters thoughts and feelings. It is also descriptive to their actions, as well as the things and events going on around them, without being locked too strictly on the thoughts of the main character.

"O"bituary | Alby, age unknown, sacrificed himself to save his fellow gladers. Alby was a brave, hard-working individual. He knew how to take control of a group, and was the most senior boy in the Glade. He will be dearly missed by his best friend, Newt.

"P"rotagonist | The main protagonists in The Maze Runner are Thomas and his friends. These friends include Thomas, Minho, Teresa, Newt, Alby, and Chuck.

"Q"uotes | My favorite quotes from The Maze Runner: | "Then it hit Thomas - he felt like several pieces of a puzzle had been put together. He didn't know what the ultimate picture would be, but his next words almost felt like they were coming from someone else. "Chuck, I... I think I've been here before."" pg.) 35 | I believe this quote is important because it is the moment that Thomas realizes his connection to the maze, which is later key to their escape, and the resolution to the plot.

I believe this quote is effective because it is one of the most cryptic and mysterious lines from Teresa (the only girl in the maze.) Although Thomas does not realize it at the time, it is an important clue about how to solve the maze. | ""The maze is a code,Thomas. The maze is a code."" pg.) 232

"R"esolution | The Maze runner has an interesting resolution. THe gladers are able to escape by decoding the maze, fighting the grievers while Chuck; Thomas; and Teresa escape through the griever hole and enter the code words into a secret room with a computer.

"S"ensory Details | "A metallic clicking sound from the branches grabbed at his attention, made him look up; a flash of silver and red light caught his eyes just before disappearing around the trunk to the other side. He scrambled to his feet and walked around the tree, craning his neck for a sign of whatever he'd heard, but he saw only bare branches, gray and brown, forking out like skeleton fingers- and looking just as alive." pg.) 13 This passage appeals to the senses and has an over all impact on the story. It highlights Thomas' confusion toward the Glade; as well as being the moment when Thomas realizes there are small, robotic spies that watch over the gladers and report back to the creators.

 "T"op 5 Song List

These songs all could be found on Alby's iPod. They help explain and pertain to his character and personality.

1.) 29: This song demonstrates the hopelessness that the gladers feel at times. As demonstrated in the song, the gladers feel at times that they may give up, and are always looking to each other for answers.

This song relates to Alby in terms of his endurance and motivation. It would take a lot of perseverance to lead a group of terrified boys, which is something that Alby was able to overcome.

3.) Numb by Linkin Park | I'm tired of being what you want me to be Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface Don't know what you're expecting of me Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow) Every step that I take is another mistake to you (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow) [Chorus:] I've become so numb, I can't feel you there Become so tired, so much more aware I'm becoming this, all I want to do Is be more like me and be less like you Can't you see that you're smothering me, Holding too tightly, afraid to lose control? 'Cause everything that you thought I would be Has fallen apart right in front of you. (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow) Every step that I take is another mistake to you. (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow) And every second I waste is more than I can take. [Chorus:] And I know I may end up failing too. But I know You were just like me with someone disappointed in you. [Chorus:] [Chorus:]

This song focuses on the pain and pressure that comes with so many people looking up to Alby. As a leader, he must feel like he's always second-guessing himself, and is unsure of some of his choices. That aspect is shown in this song.

4.) Airplanes by B.O.B | Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now Wish right now, wish right now Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now Wish right now, wish right now Yeah, I could use a dream or a genie or a wish To go back to a place much simpler than this 'Cause after all the partyin' and cashin' and crashin' And all the glitz and the glam and the fashion And all the pandemonium and all the madness There comes a time where you fade to the blackness And when you starin' at that phone in your lap And you hopin' but them people never call you back But that's just how the story unfolds You get another hand soon after you fold And when your plans unravel in the sand What would you wish for if you had one chance? So airplane, airplane, sorry I'm late I'm on my way so don't close that gate If I don't make that then I'll switch my flight And I'll be right back at it by the end of the night Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now Wish right now, wish right now Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now Wish right now, wish right now Yeah, somebody take me back to the days Before this was a job, before I got paid Before it ever mattered what I had in my bank Yeah, back when I was tryin' to get a tip at subway And back when I was rappin' for the thrill of it But nowadays we rappin' to stay relevant I'm guessin' that if we can make some wishes out of airplanes Then maybe, oh, maybe I'll go back to the days Before the politics that we call the rap game And back when ain't nobody listened to my mix tape And back before I tried to cover up my slang But this is for the hater, what's up, [Incomprehensible] So can I get a wish to end the politics? And get back to the music that started this hit So here I stand, and then again I say I'm hopin' we can make some wishes out of airplanes Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now Wish right now, wish right now Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now Wish right now, wish right now I could really use a wish right now I, I, I could really use a wish right now A wish, a wish right now

This song high-lights Alby's desperation to escape the maze. As well as the rest of the gladers, Alby's only goal is to make it out safely. The theme of this song is shooting for your wishes, which is what Alby and the rest of the gladers do on a regular basis.

5.) Runaway by Mat Kearny | Tonight you're letting go, under the burning glow We're too young to hold this all on our own All that came and went riding them by the winds Blowing through the trees, she could feel it on her skin Walking the lost streets, no one ever shares Cry yourself to sleep, waiting on a little prayer Bags are by the door, hearts are on the floor There's a bottle of tears on the dresser drawer Nobody knows the trouble we've seen Nobody knows the price of this dream And nobody knows what it took to believe Nobody (Chorus) She wants to be free, like a runaway, ay ay ay Trying to believe, gonna find a way, ay ay ay ay We got just one life, tonight we're running all the lights Trying to break free, like a runaway ay ay ay ay ay The road below our wheels, all that we fought to heal You close your eyes and cry, dying for the right to feel I hear it coming down, oh the sweetest sound Of forgotten tears falling on the solid ground Nobody knows the trouble we've seen Nobody knows the price of this dream And nobody knows what it took to believe Nobody (Chorus) Oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh We're singing "How did we get this far riding on a shooting star? " It's like flying on the wings of God She wants to be free Like a runaway ay ay ay Trying to believe, gonna find a way ay ay ay ay We got just on life, tonight we're running all the lights Trying to break free, like a runaway ay ay ay ay ay

This song is about the longing for an escape from all the sadness one must go through. Alby goes through a great deal of grief in the story, and is also trying to overcome it and find an exit.

"U"ndercover Mission | The author of The Maze Runner is James Dashner. Dashner attended college at Brigham University. He has been married to his wife, Lynette Anderson, for over five years, and has two children. Dashner was also born in southern Georgia, as well as being raised there.

"V"isiting Your Favorite Character | 1.) What is your connection to Alby? I believe this question is important, because it is never fully explained in the book. it is apparent that there is a deep connection between the two, but it is never explained how that bond was formed. | 2.) How did you suffer your injury in the maze? I ask this question because it is a haunting mystery within the book, and the injury seems to cause emotional trauma to Newt. | If I had to visit my favorite character, I would visit Newt, and ask him these analytical questions.

3.) Are there any memories that came back to you while being inside the glade for so long? While Thomas was in the maze, vivid memories began to come back to him. My question would answer whether any ever came back to Newt. | 4.) What do you think have been you most difficult struggles while being trapped in the maze? While each of the gladers were in the maze, they all face difficult obstacles that they must overcome. My question is important because it would help had dimension to Newt's personality and character. | 5.) Did you feel a connection to Thomas when he first entered the maze? Over Thomas' time in the maze, a relationship begins to build between them. My question could answer questions about their loyalty and friendship toward each other.

"W"hy? | There is human motivation that drives the plot in The Maze Runner. This motivation is the desperation of the situation created by the creators to escape the maze. In order to survive, the gladers must find a way to get out. This instinctual motivation helps push them to a solution. They are driven by the obstacles that the creators keep throwing at them, and are only trying to overcome them. For example, when the creators shut off the supplies and safety, the gladers are only trying to find their way out to survive. They are in a sense, having a fire ignited under them. This alone is enough to keep driving them to find an exit. As all of the characters are extremely intellgent, they are able to capture this motivation and fear. Due to this, they are able to make their escape, and find what lies on the outside of the maze.

"X"-Ray | Why Alby burned the maps. Alby burned the maps to keep the other gladers from returning from the outside world. When Alby had been stung by a griever, he went through a gruesome "changing" that made him remember things from his past. One of his memories were that of the outside world. The memory was so horrible to Alby, that he would rather spare the gladers the horrors that they would escape to, than a lifetime of being imprisoned inside of the maze.

"Y"ou Choose | The strange words and phrases the gladers use to describe things: | Green-bean/Greenie: The current new-comer to enter the maze.

Beetle-blade: Mechanical spies programmed by the creators, that monitor the actions of the gladers. | Keeper: The leader of a certain branch of jobs/chores within the glade. | Shuck: An insult/ another word for forget. | Klunk: Another word for poop. An insult among the gladers.

"Z"inger | One "zinger" in this book is when Thomas wakes up to realize that the sun has not risen. It is unexpected because none of the gladers knew that the entire environment is synthetic, and that the creators have the power to switch it off.
