 ROCKET BOYS: CHAPTER ONE- COALWOOD
Coalwood was kept alive and controlled by the mine, looking for the little rich coal in all that rock. My dad, Homer Hickam was the superintendent of the mine.
In Coalwood, every single house was the same. The dust and dirt from the mine covered everything in a thin coat of black.
In Coalwood, even the church was company owned. As a kid I knew Reverend Richard, who I used to deliver newspapers to. He would tell me Bible stories when he had spare time.
Years before, Cherokee tribes had hunted in the area that became Coalwood. As kids, we invented our own Indian tribe I called the Coalhicans.
My parents were Homer and Elsie Hickam. As mine superintendent, my dad was frequently gone, which often led to arguments between the two.
Near Coalwood there was a larger town called Welch. It was here where my brother Jim and I would go to the theaters while our parents shopped at the stores.
As kids in Coalwood, it was up to us to make our own fun. Our ways of doing that ranged from following the miners around to allowing speeding coal carts run over our pennies and flatten them into little medals.
In school, I loved reading. I read through all the books the school had. It was only a matter of time before I discovered Jules Verne, who quickly became a favorite of mine.
"She had been working on the painting ever since dad took over the mine and we moved into the Captain's house."
Both of my parents' families were mostly miners. The only one who didn't seem interested was my mother, Elsie Hickam. Throughout my life, the question remained on if I would follow their footsteps or not.
