1: 1990-2011 60 Historical Events | By: Mekenzie Keese and Alexis King

2: The Hubble Telescope is launched into space. It was named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. | Anti-Apartheid campaigner, Nelson Mandela, was released from Prison after 27 1/2 years. He was the Deputy President of the African National Congress. | East and West Germany reunite after 45 years of division. The German Flag rose in both East and West Germany signifying that they were united again. | 1990

4: The Soviet Union fell and became 15 different countries. This ended the Cold War since the Soviet Union was the US's enemy during the War. | The largest soccer stadium riot accured in Orkney, South Africa. At least 40 people died during it. | 1991

6: President Bush and President Yeltsin of Russia declared a new era of "friendship and partnership" as they ended the Cold War. There has been a rivalry between the US and of what used to be the Soviet Union for 7 decades! However, now it is over! | Bill Clinton is elected President of the United States. Al Gore is elected Vice President. | Riots in LA began, because a jury acquitted 4 white LAPD officers in the beating of Rodney King. 6 days after the verdict, 53 people were dead and thousands were injured. | 1992

8: Audrey Hepburn dies near her home in Switzerland from colon cancer. She was one of America's most beloved actresses. | Human embryo's were first cloned in 1993. They were cloned by researchers Robert Stillman and Jerry Hall from George Washington University. | Czechoslovakia is split into two countries, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The country split because of the Velvet Revolution of 1989 and because of the end of the joined state in 1992. | A truck bomb was detonated below the North Tower of the World Trade Center. It brought both towers down and killed thousands. | 1993

10: The Rwandan Genocide was the massacre of about 800,00 people in Rwanda. The massacre was because of the tension between the two ethnic groups, the Tutsi and Hutu. | Nelson Mandela was elected the first Black President of South Africa. He won over the international respcet for his advocacy of national and international reconcilitaion. | OJ Simpson was arrested in the murders of his ex wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. he was acquitted of all charges after the trial. | Olympic figure skater, Nancy Kerrigan, was clubbed in the right knee with a collapisble police baton. The attack was planned by rival Tony Hardings ex husband Jeff Gillooly and friend Shawn Eckardt. | 1994

12: Pope John Paul II visits the United States. He went to Newark, NJ, Brooklyn, NY, New York, NY, and Baltimore, MD | US Space shuttle, Atlantis, docks with the Russian space station, Mir. This made the largest man-made satellite to orbit the Earth. | 1995

14: Mad Cow disease is being passed from cow to calf in Britain. 4.5 million cattle are destryoed because of this disease. | South Africa gets a new constitution. It divdes South Africa into 9 provinces. | The Taliban gained control of the capitol of Afghanistan, Kabul. The laws of the Taliban were based on the Quran and disregard from human rights. | 1996

16: Ellen DeGeneres comes out publicly as a lesbian. She came out on Oprah. | The movie, Titanic, came out. It is a epic romance and disaster film directed by James Cameron. | Princess Diana of Wales, is killed August 31, 1997 as a result of her injuries in a car crash in Paris France. The crash was caused by the chauffer. | 1997

18: Westside Middle School massacre was a school shooting by 13 year old Mitchell Johnson and 11 year old Andrew Golden. 5 people, 4 girls and 1 teacher, were killed during the massacre. | Bill Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives for perjury and obstruction of justice. He was later acquitted by the Senate. | US embassy's were bombed in Kenya and Tanzania. This brought Osama Bin Laden and Ayman Al Zawahri to the US public attention. | 1998

20: Nelson Mandela steps down from office. He was president from May 1994-June 1999. | 2 Senior students at Columbine High School, went on a killing spree and killed 12 students and 1 teacher. The students then commited suicide. This is the deadliest American High School massacre. | JFK Jr. was killed when his plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. JFK Jr., his wife Carolyn, and his sister in-law Lauren were all killed from the crash. | 1999

22: 2000 | New millennium begins and hits time square with the ball dropping. The balls first decent during the last minute of the 20th century. | Microsoft releases windows 2000. Microsoft was the ideal platform for the next generation of computers. | "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" movie came out. It was a big budget remake of the classic cartoon.

24: 2001 | 9/11 is when the twin towers collapse because two planes crashed into them. They were the two tallest towers in Manhattan, New York. | Apple releases the I pod. With the I pod, apple has invented a whole new category of digital music player that lets you put your entire music collection in your pocket. | George Bush goes into office. He becomes the 43rd President of the United States.

26: 2002 | Pope John ll is accused of child abuse. U.S churches now do background checks on priests. | An estimated 40 million people are now infected with AIDS/HIV. It has now become a virus worldwide. | George Bush creates the department of homeland security. It was made to fight threats of terrorism. | American Idol started in 2002. Kelly Clarkson wan the first season of it.

28: 2003 | The biggest black out in history of North America. 50 million people loose power. | Apple launches ITunes.which becomes a major success selling 10 million songs within 4 months of launch. | U.S. plans for an invasion of Iraq. They plan to invade to to an imminent threat from weapons of mass destruction

30: 2004 | Massachusetts becomes first state in U.S. that allows same sex marriage. It was the first U.S. state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples | Martha Stewart is convicted for felony. She was sentenced for five months in prison. | The Great Earthquake and Tsunami of December 26, 2004. The tsunami in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean | Facebook is created by Mark Zuckerberg a Harvared collage student. Facebook is a social netork.

32: 2005 | Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans. HurricaneFloods 80% of the city of New Orleans. | Microsoft releases the xbox 360 gaming console. Xbox is the 7th generation of video gaming consoles. | Pope John Paul the second dies. Reigned as Pope of the Catholic Church dies at 84 years old.

34: 2006 | Nintendo releases the Wii in North American. The Wii is a motioned sensed gaming system. | Former President Gerald Ford died. He became president in 1974 after the resignation of Richard Nixon, died at age 93.

36: 2007 | One of the biggest fires in U.S. history rages in southern California. Destroying 400,000 acres and 2,000 homes. | Virginia Tech shooting. A student brings a gun to school and shots people on a collage campus.

38: 2008 | Blue-Ray comes out by Sony. Has 70% of high definition. | The 2008 Sichuan earthquake took place in china. Earthquake killed 68,000 people.

40: 2009 | Michael Jackson Died. Michael began hes solo career in 1971 and was referred to as the King of Pop. Jackson is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time. | Justin Bieber is introduced by Usher. User, the rap artist, found Justin off of a youtube video and now Justin Bieber is one of the most popular singers today. | Barack Obama is elected president. He is considered to be the first black president.

42: 2010 | The BP oil spill disaster occurs. BP leaks millions of gallons of oil into the ocean by an accidental explosion. | An earthquake in Hati occured. An estimated 316,000 people died. | Apple releases the I pad. The i pad is a platform for audio-visual media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games, and web content.

44: 2011 | Osama Bin Laden is killed! After ten years of searching for him, the U.S. kills him. Osama Bin Laden is a terroist that was a part of the 9/11 attacks. | The attempted killing of Arizona congress woman, Gabrielle Giffords. She was shot by a man but she survived!
