FC: The Thriving Colonies
The reason the New England Colonies got started is two ways. First way is when the Puritans came over to the new world from England. The Puritans left because they wanted an easier way to practice their religion freely. Also when the English came over to Plymouth and Mass. Bay. A big form of religion in the New England Colonies is the puritan life. The New England colonies consist of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. There were many different settlers that founded the New England Colonies.
Life in the New England Colonies were around religion and making money. There were alot of Puritans in the New England Colonies. Plus there were other religions, a big day in their life was sabbath or Sunday. Every Sunday you had to go to church if your didnt go to church the government would start to question you. A couple ways they would make money is fishing, hunting, lumber and ship making. When the english came over and settled the mass. bay colony, many people in that colony thought the government had to much power so they left and started their own colonys.
Unlike the New England colonies the Middle Colonies were more about farming and less religion. In the Middle colonies they had open land that was used for farming and alot of that open land was backcountry on the western side of the middle colonies. The middle colonies consisted of Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. When new Netherlands was at its hight of trading the colony and england were at fight for the most popular trading spot. So the English Army came sailing into the harbor.
When the English came into the harbor, Peter Stuyvesant surendered right away. The king of England gave the land to his brother, the duke of york, who renamed it the New York. Two men asked New York for a grant of land and when they gave the land to them it became New Jersey. William Penn recieved a charter from King Charles II. Penn ask for this charter because he thought he could make a profit off of trading in the colony. Which this colony is made to be Pennsylvania. The meaning of Pennsylvania is Penns woods. So like I said the Middle Colonys are farming colonies.
The Southern Colonies were basically about farming, and trading. They farmed different things such as corn, tobacco, indigo, and rice. They traded many things too. They traded things such as farm animals like pigs, slaves, and rum. In 1632, Sir George Calvert made King Charles I give him a grant to land so he could make a colony for chatholics practice their religion freely. This colony is name Maryland. The name Maryland came from Sir George Calverts wife. The Carolinas where formed when a couple of english noble men got a grant for land in the Americas.
The men split up and went to two colonies the north and south. The north were mostly poor tobacco farmers. The south were more richer noble men. Georgia was a place were people who owed depts that they couldnt pay could go and make a fresh start. There were two ways of life in the Southern Colonies. The tidewater plantation life which was rich people. Then there was the southern backcountry life which was middle class farmers. The growth of slave trade grew because in the southern colonies plantation owners needed workers for there plantations.
