Setting and Historical Content. | When my father was admitted to the bar he returned to Maycomb and begins his practice. (Lee 5) -I learned that Scout's father Atticus practices laws in Maycomb county Alabama. If General Jackson hadn't run the creeks up the creek, Simon Finch could have never paddled up the Alabama. (Lee 1) -I have learned that the finches live in the south because of the references to the southern armories general. | Simon would have recorded with impatient fury the disturbance between the north and south, as it left his descendants stripped of everything but their land, yet the tradition of living on the land remained unbroken until well into the 20th century, when my father, Atticus Finch, Went to Montgomery to read law, and his younger brother went to Boston to Study Medicine.(Lee 5) -I have learned that they had a tradition that had been broken when his brother moved to Boston and Atticus to Maycomb.

Understanding the context of the setting is so important to understand the characters and the conflicts they face because it gives the conflict more than one perspective and more of an understanding if you know the context. Also it gives more of a view on the characters.

The Scottsboro Boys were 9 boys who sneaked onto a train with 2 sluts. They were caught by the police and the girls falsely accused them of rape so they wouldn't get in trouble. it took them 6 years to get free. Emmett Till was a young boy looking for work in the south. He went to a store to get something and on his way out he called the woman behind the counter baby. at night he was drug out of his house by 2 white men, they beat him up and hung him from a tree. The black people in the real stories compare to the character Atticus is protecting in the case. | The Scottsboro Boys and Emmett Till case

Real: Scottsboro boys had a trial and they were accused of rape. TKaM: Tom Robinson Had a trial and was also accused of rape. Real:Emmett Till was killed during the night. TKaM: Mob cam for tom Robinson at night. Real: Scottsboro Boys were called guilty at their first trial. TKaM: Tom was accused guilty at his trial. Real: Emmett Till and Scottsboro boys were both accused and murdered in the south. TKaM: The setting of To Kill a Mockingbird was set in the south. | Real world and TKaM events

Point of View | POV: Third person Limited. Quote: "He said it all began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out." Narrator: Scout a youngster girl. | I think Harper Lee chose to tell the story from the perspective of a young girl to show the innocence of her and the other adventures the children had together to build up from light hearted to a little bit more serious tone.

Event Rewrite | It was a decent night at the Radley house. The wife and I ate dinner, and then went up to bed. I read my book until I went to sleep. I was almost asleep when all of the sudden I heard some strange noises outside. I went to the restroom and got my shotgun. I loaded it up and went to go sit by my back door. I was slowly fading into sleep when all of the sudden I heard a loud clang out the window. It scared the living hell out of me. I ran outside, all was still and then I saw some dark figures next to the house. I walked next to the figure when it took off. I shot at that thing, but it got away. Woke up the neighbors so I had to go talk em down. Man was there a lot of sleepy faces in the street next to my front yard. I walked back inside, relaxed and grabbed a cup of coffee. Turned off the light, then finally went back to bed. On my way up to bed, I notice my son had his door open. He was downstairs, I called for him and he said he'd be right up. So I went to sleep.

Conflict | Conflict 1: Tom Robinson was accused of rape, type of conflict is man vs man, external. Conflict 2: Jem and Scout are trying to see Boo Radley, type of conflict is man vs man, external. Conflict 3: Scout doesn't want to go to school but has to, man vs society, internal.

Conflict 1 involves Tom, before the conflict he was nice and helped out who he thought was a nice lady, after the conflict he was out in prison then was shot When he tried to run. Conflict 2 involves Jem, Before the conflict he wasn't worried about much and he sort of stayed out of trouble, after the conflict he was always getting into trouble by Atticus for always bothering the Radley's. and he was almost shot. Conflict 3 involves Scout, Before she would be running and playing all day, after the conflict she was always complaining about school but could still play after school.

Characterization | Dynamic Characters Scout, a young girl turning into a woman. She has been trying to do more lady like stuff instead of being a tom boy like she was at the beginning of the story. She started wearing dressed and started hanging out with older women. Jem, a young boy turning into a man. He kept getting more brave and mature through the story, also he began to do less childish things then he even watched his dad in court. | Static Characters Atticus, An honest kind hearted man who is also a hard worker. He stayed kind all through the story and even after everything went bad he stayed strong and helpful. Calpurnia, A gentle woman who watches after Jem and Scout, she's honest and nice. She likes to look out for people. Also always stayed with Scout and Jem. Lastly she was helpful with the kids and people in her society.

Symbols | In the title to kill a mockingbird, The mockingbird symbolizes innocence and beauty. The innocence in the story is Tom Robinson when he should have been not guilty when he was falsely accused for a girls benefit. Also how Scout and Jem are innocent children in the story and are learning adult situations at a young age. The beauty in the story is when the town comes together for good, and Atticus's beauty and compassion for the case of Tom Robinson, How he stood up for him in his helpless time of need.

Boo Radley: With the innocence of Boo Radley i think he could be a mockingbird. He always stays in his house and acts shy and innocent like a young kid. Tom Robinson: Tom was innocent also, he was falsely accused and didn't deserve the punishment he was given. Scout Finch: She is a young innocent child but was gentle and had a good point of view on life and how people should live.

Themes | Detail: Don't judge a book by its cover. Evidence: "I'm going to tell you something and tell you one time, stop tormenting that man." (Lee 65) Elaboration: It proves it because it shows Scout and Jem are trying to find out what Boo Radley is like because they think hes a scary person. Explain: in the real world a person judges before they know someone but they should have really gotten o know them. Detail: Don't put yourself or your race higher than someones else's. Evidence: "Scout, Said Atticus, Nigger lover is just one of those terms that don't mean anything. Like snot nose. Its hard to explain, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favoring Negro's over and above themselves." Elaboration: My quote proves the theme because it shows Atticus is teaching Scout to not put herself over others. Explain: This can be used in the real world and I think it will help people gaining respect from others and showing how good mannered one can be. Detail: Try to put yourself in the other person's place and understand why they act the way they do even if you don't agree with it. Evidence: "If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, You'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folk. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. Until you climb in his skin and walk around in it." Elaboration: The Quote proves the theme because it shows Atticus is teaching his child a good life lesson, also to respect people and their situation even if you don't like or understand them. Explain: This can be used in the real world. It will help cause less drama and help with understanding people and getting more friends.

Personal Reflection | I think To Kill a Mockingbird was a fantastic book. I think there was a lot of great parts in this book and only a few ones I wasn't very fond of. My favorite parts were when Scout and Jem were trying to get a hold of Boo Radley and got shot at my Mr. Radley. Also all the parts in the trial I liked. The only part I didn't like was when Tom Robinson died by getting shot, I wish he would have lived and was set free. But I know thats how the book was supposed to go. Also I kind of liked when May Ella lied about Tom and Atticus made her look kind of dumb by using his skills to make her story sound fake. But it was an overall good read and I enjoyed it.
