Summary Summary- It is 1933 in Maycomb Alabama. It is a small town where everybody knows everybody. The main characters are the Finches. Atticus Finch (father), Scout Finch (daughter), and Jem Finch (son). Atticus is a lawyer who takes his job seriously. He tries to teach the kids to have morals and respect. His wife died to an unexpected heart attack so his help Calpurnia assists with raising the kids. Scout Finch is a little girl who loves to act like a boy. She loves to play with her brother Jem. Jem Finch is a boy in his preteens. He and Scout always seem to get into trouble. They meet a boy name Charles Baker Harris (Dill) and immediately have a connection. Dill comes from Meridian, Mississippi and he stays in Maycomb County during the summer with his Aunt Rachel. They are in the Great Depression so there really is nothing that the kids have to do during the summer. They become fascinated with Arthur Radley (Boo) who lives across the street from them. Atticus told them to leave Boo alone he is just like anybody else in Maycomb County. When summer was over Dill went back to Meridian while Scout and Jem went to school. Scout started in first grade and she hated it. She made a promise to her father in order for him to keep reading to her. After school they found gifts from an anonymous person. That immediately stopped though. Time passed and Jem started showing he was maturing and taking responsibility. One night Scout found something under her bed and Jem went and told Atticus. Meanwhile Atticus’s sister (Aunt Alexandra) came to stay with them because she felt they needed a female in the house. Aunt Alexandra tries to make Scout act like a lady which she hates. Meanwhile Atticus is given a case of a black man (Tom Robinson) who is accused of raping Mayella Ewells. The Ewells is the trash of the town and everybody knows that. After the case if over Dill and Jem are really upset to what happened to Tom. Mr. Ewells ensured that he would get revenge on Atticus. Of course Atticus wasn’t worried until Scout and Jem got attacked from a person who smelled like whiskey. Jem is more injured than Scout is so the doctor came to examine him. There was a man in the room with Jem that Scout has never seen before. Boo finally reveals himself at the end of the book. He did a real heroic thing and Officer Tate covered up for him. I hope this makes you want to read this book..
Scout is a young girl who is still in the stage where everything is about her. She is a tom boy and love to play with her brother. She loves to read with her father at night. She learns a lot from her father and Calpurnia. She meets a friend and they hang out over the summer. When school is not in they didn't have anything to do so they made up most games. She hates school. She doesn't get the town's people and how they think. | Jem- Jem is a bit older when the book starts. He really loves football. He loves playing with Scout and they always seem to get in trouble. As the book gets in depth he is going into the adolescence days. He is becoming more responsible and Scout hates that. He wants to cause little problems as possible while Atticus is defending Tom Robinson. He is really upset because of what happens to Tom Robinson. | Atticus- Atticus is a lawyer and a widow. His wife died from a heart attack. So he is taking care of his kids alone with the help of Calpurnia. He teaches his kids respect and raises them well. He works really hard so at the end of the day he likes to read the paper. He believes in doing what’s right. He treats his kids like adults. He is really respected by the town until the Tom Robinson trial. Later in the book he gets a visitor to help raise the kids. He always makes sure that the kids respect everybody.
Quotes 1. "'They've done it before and they did it tonight and they'll do it again and when they do it -- seems that only children weep.'"Pg. 213 Atticus said this, This is quote is important because he is showing that children are still innocent. The adults are used to the racism. 2. "'Hey, Boo.'"Pg. 270 Scout is said this . This is important because it is showing that Scout is no longer scared of Boo. She is actually grateful that he saved them. "3. 'There's a black boy dead for no reason, and the man responsible for it's dead. Let the dead bury the dead this time....'"Pg. 276 Mr. Heck Tate said this. This is important because it is basically saying walk away from it because it is complete. They should worry about other things.
Quotes 4. "'Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.'" Pg. 90 Miss Maudie said this. It is important because she referring to how it is a sin. You should not kill anything that is not harming. 5. "It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived." Pg. 100 Scout said this. it is important because she never saw her father like this. She never knew he could shoot a gun that good. He saved the town. 6. "Well it'd be sort of like shootin' a mockingbird, wouldn't it?" Pg. 276 Scout said this. It is important because Boo was innocent just like the bird. They didn't want him to go to jail.
Diary Entry Dear diary: It is after the Tom Robinson trial and I am upset. I don't see how the jury would even think that this man is guilty. He clearly didn't do it and they still found him guilty. This town is so messed up. How can they believe the Ewells knowing that they are liars. A man with a paralyzed left arm can not attack a girl. I am devastated that this happened. I feel really bad for his family. I know that he is innocent and if he gets the death chair I will go crazy. They said I should get used to it the inequality but I just can't.
The Beauty of Grey I chose this song because it relates to the book To Kill a MockingBird. It relates because in the book a black man was found guilty of rape when he was really innocent. In this song it is talking about inequality. It says how we should blend together black and white in order to get alone. In the book the white hated the black and I think that this song was perfect.
Lyrics If I told you he was your brother We could reminisce Then you would go about your day If I said you ought to give him some of your water You'd shake your canteen and walk away The perception that divides you from him Is a lie For some reason you never asked why This is not a black and white world You can't afford to believe in your side This is not a black and white world To be alive I say that the colours must swirl And I believe That maybe today We will all get to appreciate The Beauty of Grey If I told you she was your mother [- From :http://www.elyrics.net/read/l/live-lyrics/the-beauty-of-gray-lyrics.html -] We could analyze the situation and be gone If I said you ought to give her Some of your water Your eyes would light up like the dawn The perception that divides you from her Is a lie For some reason we never asked why This is not a black and white world You can't afford to believe in your side This is not a black and white world To be alive I say the colors must swirl And I believe That maybe today We will all get to appreciate The beauty of gray Look into your eyes No daylight New day now
