"Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square". I can tell from this quote that Maycomb county is a small southern town. You can also tell that it is a little rundown town and | "The Maycomb jail was the most venerable and hideous of the county's buildings". From this quote I can tell that Maycomb does not have that much crime and that they do not care about their prisoners because the jail is not very nice. | "The south side of the square was deserted. Giant monkey puzzle bushes bristled on each corner, and between them an iron hitching rail glistened under the street lights". This quote showed me that Maycomb county was a very quiet area at night.
Why is it important to know the setting??? it is important to know the setting because the setting can completely change the story. if the setting is in the 21st century then there probably won't be dinosaurs roaming around.
The Trials of the Scottsboro boys is a set of trials about a group of black men that were accused of rape by some women. The women were riding on the same train as the men and were going to get in trouble so they blamed the men of raping them to move the trouble to the black men. | The book To Kill a Mockingbird is based of some real life events. One of those is the trials of the Scottsboro boys. Another event is what happened to Emmett Till. Emmett Till was a black boy who grew up in the north, then moved to the south where it was still very racist. One day Emmitt Till whistled at a white woman when leaving a store and the woman told some men. That night Emmett Till was drug from his bed and beaten almost to death then he was hung. | To Kill a Mockingird based on real events.
Real World Events 9 black men were accused of rape. Judge Hutton defended the scottsboro boys. Scotsboro boys took place in Alabama. Emmet Till was taken from his bed and hung. | To Kill a Mockingbird Events Tom Robinson is accused of rape. Atticus defends Tom Robinson. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Alabama. The mob comes to take Tom Robinson to kill him. | Real World Events Vs. To Kill a Mockingbird Events
First person point of view was used in To Kill a Mockingbird. An example is "Don't you remember me, Mr. Cunningham? I'm Jean Luise Finch. You brought us some hickory nuts one time, remember?". Scout is the narrator and she is a little girl who does not understand what is happening in this part of the book. Harper Lee probably chose to write from the view of a little girl because it proves that nobody is born racist or hateful. | There were several conflicts in the book. Some of them were when Mr. Cunningham tried to take Tom Robinson from the jail. Another conflict is when Ms. Maudie's home caught on fire and burned to the ground. The third conflict is when Mr. Ewell tried to kill Scout and Jem. These conflicts did affect and change many characters. Scout was changed by the Mr. Cunningham incident because she now knows that there is at least one gang in Maycomb County. Ms. Maudie was changed by her house catching on fire because she now has no home and is relieved because she hated that home. And finally Jem is changed by Mr. Ewell trying to kill them because he now has a broken arm and doesn't know if he can play football anymore like he wants to. | Point Of View in To Kill a Mockingbird. | Conflict in the book
Characterization | Dynamic | Static | Jem is a Dynamic character. He is a 12-13 year old boy who is the son of Atticus FInch. At the beginning of the story Jem was very nice to scout and at the end he was very mean and wanted nothing to do with scout. Scout is a Dynamic character too. Scout is a southern tomboy. At the beginning of the story scout is a very innocent girl but at the end she started to realize how evil and mean the world is. | Aunt Alexandria is a static character. She is static because she was mean at the beginning and mean and the end. Atticus is also a static character because he is very kind and nice to everyone. Atticus does not change with his attitude at all during the book. | Symbols | The symbol of the mockingbird is very important because it is in the title and the mockingbird symbolizes innocence. There are many parts where people are like a mockingbird. Some people who were a mockingbird in this book were Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Scout Finch. Boo Radley was like a mockingbird at the end when he was walking back to his house with scout and when he carried jem back to the Finch's house. Tom Robinson was like a mockingbird because he just helped Mayella do many chores and did not do anything to harm her or anyone else. Scout is also like a mockingbird too because she did not know very many mean things and did not fully understand racism.
One theme of To Kill a Mockingbird is that Racism is a learned trait. This is a theme because scout said "Atticus, I said one evening, what exactly is a nig*er-lover?" This proves that racism is a learned trait because scout is still young and does not what that means which is a racist term. This theme can also be seen in the movie "42" the dad started yelling racist things then the kid started doing it too even though he didn't understand. | Themes
Themes | The importance of education is also a theme in this book. This is a theme because in the book because scout says tat she learned just about everything but algebra. Education is a big problem in this book because many people do not know the simple things like reading ad writing. People not knowing these simple things can be a very large disadvantage because they do not know how to do these essentials. This can relate to real life because many people back then did not get a proper education.
Themes | The last theme is that appearances can be deceiving because Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, and that one man who sat with the blacks were all very different than they seem. They are all different because boo seemed very mean and evil, but he is very nice and just misunderstood. Tom Robinson is different than he seems because he is black and everyone thought he was mean and raped mayella, but he did not and just helped her with many things.
Atticus Point of View | This is the scene when Atticus is outside the jail. I knew that someone was going to try and attack Mr. Tom Robinson. So I decided to sit in front of the prison to defend my client. As I was sitting there I was sure that I heard something so I looked up and closed my magazine. Before I knew it Mr. Cunningham and his friends were in front of me asking about Tom. I knew I was required maintain Tom's safety since it is my job. Then they told me to move out of the way, they said they didn't want any problems with me. I started to tell them about how I could not let them harm Tom. As soon as it seemed that Mr. Cunningham and his friends were going to attack me, scout came running into the middle of us. My heart skipped a beat and I was sure that I was hallucinating. “Hey Atticus” Scout said, I glanced at her with a look saying something close to ”get outta here now”! Her smile faded as she saw that I was clearly unhappy with her being here. I started to wonder if she wandered up here on her own whenever Dill and Jem ran up next to Scout. “Get back home Jem, take Scout and Dill with you” I said, but they stayed standing. I could tell that Mr. Cunningham was getting frustrated with their presence. One of Mr. Cunningham’s friends grabbed Jem by the collar and Scout’s face changed to a furious look and kicked the man. I told Scout and the kids that they must return home one final time and they did not listen to me once again. Next Scout looked at the faces of the men studying each one carefully. Then Scout said “Hey Mr. Cunningham”. I was so furious that I stopped listening and was praying to god that the kids would get home safely. I picked up a couple parts of what scout was saying, like she was talking about Mr. Cunningham’s entailment, and his son. After Scout talked to him a little he said “Let's get going, boys”. Next Mr. Cunningham and his friends went back into the car and drove away. I felt so relieved to know that none of the children were harmed in any way.
Personal Reflection of To Kill a Mockingbird. | I personally believe that the book To Kill A Mockingbird was an alright book. I think so because the book is incredibly boring until the end of the court case. I enjoyed the book once the court case for Tom Robinson was finished. I think that this is the best part of the book because it is full of action like when Bob Ewell attacked Scout and Jem. Also a good part before the court case was when Mr. Cunningham was after Tom Robinson. I did not enjoy this book for a long time because it is incredibly boring for a majority of the book. I think that the book is boring because the book is about Scout and hating school, and Dill coming back for the summer. I feel like this book should of been all about the court case and what happened afterwards. If I could of wrote this book or changed something about it, I would make it have less of the boring events that just lead up to the court case. Also I would of made Tom Robinson escape from prison, but since he was a black in the south, people would of told the sheriff who would have to punish him by death or just put him into some special prison where he cannot escape.
