1: The First Slave Traders. | One of the first slave traders was Sir Robert Rich | He owned plantations in Virginia. | The picture below is believed to be one of Sir Robert Rich's plantations.
2: The Transatlantic trade route went three different ways. | It took an outward passage from Europe to Africa carrying manufactured goods. | Then took a middle passage from Africa to America or the Caribbean carrying African captives. | Lastly, it went homeward carrying sugar, tobacco, rum, rice, cotton and other goods back to Europe.
3: In the 1790's, there were 480,000 enslaved people being transported by ships. | They were enslaved in British Caribbean colonies | An estimated 11-12 million Africans were transported across the Atlantic into slavery.
4: Many more than 11-12 million died during the capture and transportation. | In the first third of the 18th century, Britain's involvement with slave trade grew larger.
5: Olaudah Equiano wrote about resisting being captured | Some people started to rise up and fight. They would fight their captors. | They would rather commit suicide rather than facing enslavement.
