FC: US History Project | By Ernesto Chuc Fernando Flores

Life in the ranchos combined hard work and the occasional fiesta or social gathering. Most lived in the simple adobe houses with dirt floors.the californios produced almost eveything they needed at home | Indian servants did much of the work | Life in the West

The americans who rushed to california 1849 had many skills but they knew nothing about mining mexicanos introduced them to batea or gold pan Miners scooped up mud from stream bed with the batea then they swished it around to wash away the lightweight sand. | Mexicano Contributions to the Southwest

The different worlds of north and south led to conflicting viewpoints on may isues including internal improvements and trade. But the most divisive issue of all was slavery. The north too had its wealthy class. But farmers and laborers alike believed they could create comfortable lives for their families. | The Worlds of North and South

African Americans at Mid-Century | In pre-industrial societies, slaves and their labour were economically extremely important. In modern mechanised societies, there is less need for sheer massive manpower;Norbert Wienerwrote that "mechanical labor has most of the economic properties of slave labor, though... it does not involve the direct demoralizing effects of human cruelty

The furor over slavery in new territories erupted again after the war with mexico. The comprimise of 1850 admitted califonia as a free state while leaving the territories of new mexico and utah open to slavery. Once again compromise failed, northeners refused to honor the fugitive slave law. | A Diving Nation

The Civil War | On November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States -- an event that outraged southern states. The Republican party had run on an anti-slavery platform, and many southerners felt that there was no longer a place for them in the Union. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded. By Febrary 1, 1861, six more states -- Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas -- had split from the Union. The seceded states created the Confederate States of America and elected Jefferson Davis, a Mississippi Senator, as their provisional president

Tensions in the West | During the civil war the homestead act and the pacific railway act aroused new interest in the west. The completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869 opened in the west to a flood or new settlers. The settling of the west helped to make the united states one of the worlds largest and wealthiest contries.
