FC: Your First Year

Before you were conceived, we were a happy family of three. Your dad and I taught full-time while Jackson thrived in daycare. We tried to have another baby for a year without any success. We wanted nothing more than to have a second child. We never expected to have a third and fourth, too!

After feeling very queasy on Thanksgiving, I took a pregnancy test on Black Friday (Nov. 23, 2012). I was only 3.5 weeks along, but the test immediately revealed a dark line. Our first ultrasound was scheduled a few weeks later on Dec. 10. At exactly six weeks, we were hoping for a heartbeat.

The ultrasound technician said, "You got a lot of bang for your buck." She then showed us three heartbeats. I screamed and told her to count again. Your dad turned ghostly white. My OB talked to us about selective reduction and the complications of a triplet pregnancy. We were scared and excited.

After announcing our exciting news to friends and family, we were eager to find out the sex. Ideally, we wanted a boy and two girls, so each of you could have a brother and a sister. We were elated to find out the sexes at exactly 15 weeks on Feb. 11.

My c-section was scheduled for 37 weeks on Monday, July 15. James and Amelia did not require any assistance. Maddie went into respiratory distress and required resuscitation. Each of you were able to breastfeed in the recovery room within 30 minutes of delivery. No NICU was needed!
