S: Zachary and the Squeak Monster by Michelle Asgarali
BC: Zachary is excited to play with his best friend. But they keep getting interrupted. First by his baby sister Amelia, who wants to play too. Then by gross creepy crawlers, who get in his way. And finally by something following them... Something that goes SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK! | Michelle Asgarali was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. But she never let being in a wheelchair stop her from pursuing a career in Canadian Film and Television. Now she uses the medium of storytelling to encourage young children to never give up. Lianna Murdoch has spent many hours surrounded by the creative chaos of a toy store. Now she uses this inspiration to paint a world of imagination in her illustrations. As an animator, she strives to bring life and appeal to all her characters she works with. The two friends have known each other since high school. And if ever Lianna heard SQUEAK, she would not run. For she knew it was just Michelle's noisy wheels speeding down the hall. | ©Illustrations & Story ©November 2010

To Zachary and Amelia our real life adventurers, who makes us smile as soon as we hear them coming.
Zachary was so excited to have his friend Lloyd over. "What do you want to play first?" He asked. "I love baseball," said Lloyd. | "BA-BA!" Agreed a small voice from behind. | They turned to see Zach's baby sister crawling up. "Oh no Mala. You're too little. You need to run to play baseball. Watch."
Amelia sucked on her soother as the older boys played ball. Zach knocked the ball into the bushes, and ran as fast as he could to... FIRST BASE... SECOND BASE... THIRD BASE. | "Home run!" Shouted Zachary. "I can't find the ball," said Lloyd. So Zack went over to help him find it.
Deep in the shadowy bushes, the boys looked high and low for the ball. But they could not find it. "Be careful," Zach warned, "the bushes are full of spiders!" "EEEEEWWWW!" Cried Lloyd. But then the leaves began to rustle. And they heard a noise. SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK "What was that?" Asked Lloyd. "I... I... I don't know!" Said Zachary. "Let's get out here!" He replied running out of the bushes, with Zach behind him.
"What do you want to do now?" Asked Lloyd. "I love the slippery slide" said Zach. | "MA-MA," shouted a small voice from below. | "Oh no Mala. You're too little," Zach told his sister, "you need to climb to go down the slide. Watch."
Amelia pointed up at the older kids as they climbed the ladder. FIRST STEP... SECOND STEP... THIRD STEP. | "Wheee!" Lloyd cheered as he slid down with his hands to the sky.
"Watch out for the bird poop on the bottom," Lloyd warned. "EEEEEWWWW!" Grimaced Zach, as they inspected the black and white blob. But then they heard a noise from above. SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK "What was that?" Asked Lloyd. "I don't know. But i...i...it's following us," whispered Zachary. "Let's get out of here!" They yelled and jumped off the playground.
"Do you want to play soccer?" Zack asked, "because I love soccer!" | "TA-TA!" She called. | "Oh no Mala. You're too little. You need to kick to play soccer. Watch." | So they ran to set up the soccer net, when Amelia crawled up next to them.
Amelia tugged off her hat so she could see better, as the boys passed the ball back and forth. FIRST KICK... SECOND KICK... THIRD KICK. | "I scored!" Cheered Zachary.
"You crushed a worm!" Said Lloyd. "EEEEEWWWW!" Squirmed Zachary, as they poked their wriggling worm with a stick. Then they heard a noise. SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK | "Oh no!" Shouted Lloyd. "It's the Squeak Monster!" Shouted Zach. "Hide!" They screamed.
So Zach hid behind a tree. | While Lloyd ran up the slide.
Then the ball rolled out of the way. Amelia stood proudly. | SQUEAK | SQUEAK | SQUEAK | "Hey Amelia! Did you kick the ball?"
"And you climbed the ladder!" Zach said surprised. "ACKY," she said as she slid down the other side. | "BA-BA!" She smiled, running to the slide. | SQUEAK | SQUEAK | SQUEAK
"Mala! You're the Squeak Monster!" Zach exclaimed. | "Your shoes are squeaking when you run!" | SQUEAK | SQUEAK
"Then you're not too little anymore," Zach said giving her a big hug. "What do you want to play Amelia?" The boys asked. "BA-BA!" Amelia said with a big grin. THE END
