BC: Goldfish By: Angela Seibert
The outside of a goldfish looks like a fish. Most of the time they are gold and have and have about 27 to 31 scales along its lateral line.
The inside of a goldfish contains many systems like the respiratory system, digestive system, and the circulatory system. First the digrstive system begins in the mouth were the food is taken in and broken down. Once the fish swallows the food it goes down the esophogus and into the stomach were the food is further broken down into finger like pouches called pyloric caeca. then the little pouches travel to the liver and the pancreas which add enzymes and other digestive chemicals as the food moves through the digestive tract. The circulatory system start in the heart were the blood travels out of the heart to the gills to the rest of the body and then back to the heart. The respiratory system starts in the gills were the gases exchange then to the capilaries that allow a large surface area for exchange of gases .
Goldfish can grow up to 45cm. but are usually smaller. If you were to have a pet goldfish and have it in a small bowl then it would stay small, if you have it in a huge aquarium it will get bigger, put it in a pond or river and it can really grow up to 45cm. Basically if you have a fish in a small place it will stay smaller but if it is in a larger place it will have more room to grow.
The Goldfish does have symmetry. It has Bilateral Symmetry. This means that if you were to cut the fish right down the lateral line (middle) it will look the same on each side.
The picture above is a goldfish pond. It contains plants. Goldfish eat plants, mosquito larva, small crustacean, zooplankton, detritus, blood worms and daphnia.
Goldfish live in groups, it is called a school of goldfish. When the group of goldfish sense a predator the get closer together and act as one large fish to scare away the enemy. Some of the goldfish dive into the gravel on the bottom surface of the water and cover their entire body
Goldfish live in fresh water, the temperature can range from freezing to 30 degrees farenheight.
Goldfish move with their fins/tails, so they can travel or get away from danger. Goldfish do not have any unique behavior. They are not aggresive and if the are in the wild they travel in groups but if they are in captivity the can be held seperately.
A goldfish's senses are hearing, smelling, touch and taste. They use the sound of vibrations to tell if there is danger near and they use Smelling and taste to find the right food. Fish rarely every bump into things that is there touch sense.
