Grasslands A grassland is a characterized land dominated by grass rather than large shrubs and trees. Almost all of Africa's surface is covered by grasslands Another word for grassland is savanna. A savanna is a grassland with individual trees. It covers almost half of Africas surface.

Kangaroos The word Kangaroo comes from the Guugu Yimithirr word, gargarru. There are four types of kangaroos. They are known as the Red-Kangaroo, Eastern Grey Kangaroo, Western Grey Kangaroo, and the Antilopine Kangaroo. The Red-Kangaroo is the largest surviving Marsupial anywhere on earth. The Eastern Kangaroo is less well-known than the Red (outside of

Australia). They are most often seen in the fertile eastern part of Australia. The Western Grey Kangaroo is smaller than the others. It is found in Western Australia, Southern Australia, and near the Darling River. The Antilopine is the Far-Northern equivalent of the Eastern and Western Grey Kangaroos.

Prairie Dogs There are five types of Prairie dogs. They are known as the Black-Tailed, White-Tailed, Gunnison, Utah, and Mexican Prairie Dogs. Prairie Dogs are ground squirrels that can grow up to fourty centimeters long. They are found in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Lynx The word lynx comes from the Greek word "Lunx". They have large padded paws for walking on snow and long whiskers. Their color varies from medium-brown to gold-ish to beige-white, and occasionally has dark brown spots. There are four types of lynx. They are the Eurasian Lynx, the Canada Lynx, Iberian Lynx, and the Bobcat. These four living species evolved from the Issoire Lynx. The Eurasian Lynx is the biggest.

Cheetah The Cheetah is a typical member of the cat family. They are unique in speed, and they are the fastest land animal reaching speeds of seventy-five mph. Unlike other cats, they lack strong climbing abilities. Cheetahs are the only living member of the Acinonyx. The Genus name Acinonyx means "no-move-claw" in Greek language.

Abiotic Factors Parent material is a geological that lies on top of bedrock, and is foundation on which soil has developed. Composition depends on how and where it was deposited in relation to the ice. Soil is another abiotic factor found in the grasslands. Topography is the variety of shapes on landscape determined by slopes, elevation, and aspects. The topography of grasslands is varied landscape of gently rolling hills, prairies, rock outcrops, cliffs, Gullies, and low lying areas. It gives an incredible variety to grasslands. Natural disturbance changes grasslands in many ways such as floods, fires, and storms.

Human Impact Humans have a major impact on grasslands. They use the land for farmland, crops, and cattle. There are fires started by humans in grasslands all the time which damages soil. The animals are hunted for valuable body parts. The elephants are hunted for their tusks, lions for fur, and bison for meat. Many animals were hunted near extinction and only about 1% of grasslands are protected by governments.

Plants The Ironweed is a Vernonia species. The leaves are alternative and can reach twenty-five centimeters in length and usually has thirteen to thirty flowers per head. Joe-Pye weeds, or Eutrochium, is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in Asteraceae. The Common Tassel, or the Dipsacus Fullonum, are monocaroic prennials that grow for about a year. The Dogbane is an Apocynum species, with opposite leaves that creates a milky sap when bruised or broken.

Conservation Efforts The GCC is now helping the grasslands by protecting the ecosystem, biological diversity, and ensuring designation of protected habitat areas for species that are at risk. Grassland Bird Conservation Efforts in Missouri and Iowa have adopted the Bird Conservation Area model of Partners of Flight and applied the BCA to ten areas and benefited grassland birds.
