You can say any fool thing to a dog, and the dog will give you this look that says, 'My God, you're RIGHT. I NEVER would've thought of that.'

Moto: Medical Records | INOCULATIONS Manufacturer/Brand Name Date Given Next Due Date | Bordetella | Bordetella nasal or inoculations may be given by your veterinarian annually or semi-annually as a kennel cough preventative. It is suggested if he is going to be socializing with other dogs or going to dog events where other dogs might be infected with the virus.

Moto: Medical Records | MAINTENANCE Manufacturer/Brand Name Dates Given | Heartworm | Iverhart Max* | Flea/Tick Frontline Plus. Give as directed by your veterinarian. If there is no indication of infestations in your area, treat only when you are traveling to an area where there is a problem. Since you experience deer and other wild mammals talk with your vet regarding lime disease protection (typically spread by ticks). | 15th of every month | Worming Fecal sample tested - results negative 03/28/2012 | I recommend a stool sample be tested annually by your veterinarian (fecal float test). This test will confirm the presence of coccidia, giardia and worm infestations. Giardia may occur where the dog has access to well water, stagnant or unsanitary water. Your vet will make a treatment recommendation based on the test results.

Moto: Medical History | 1. Moto was sent to me by the breeder with coccidia, giardia and mites. All of it was treated successfully with the exception of the mites because of Moto's sensitivity to ivermectin based products. He was then treated successfully with Interceptor (3 days on/2 days off). 2. Moto has not shown any sensitivity to ivermectin (heartworm medications) as an adult. 3. April 2011: Moto was exposed to bordetella at a dog event and came down with a very mild case of the virus. No subsequent problems or bordetella nasal vaccine given.

Health Tips Corgis do have a tendency to put on a few extra pounds when allowed too. IF you do not overfeed and you also provide sufficient exercise your dog should remain at a normal weight. Mature males should weigh between 30-38 lbs dependent upon its overall size and bone structure. Weigh your dog each time you visit your veterinarian and take steps to keep him at the proper weight. Vaccinations: Heartworm medications should not be given at or near the time of a vaccination unless advised to do so by your veterinarian. The combination can create an autoimmune reaction that could lead to future autoimmune problems which are not genetically based but caused by an earlier autoimmune reaction. Feeding Your Cardigan There are a variety of dog foods available, i.e., Fromm Gold Adult and Pure Vita to name just a few. Dog food specialty stores will typically carry these and other brands also. Costco now carries a grain free brand "Nature's Domain" that some dogs do well on. Whatever your choice, keep the protein levels at about 24%. Remember if your dog's coat is shiny and healthy looking, stools are firm and minimal, then you are feeding the right dog food. Moto typically eats 1-1/2 cups kibble twice daily. His meals are supplemented with a small amount of Solid Gold Green Tripe, EVO 95% meat, or Tripett Green Tripe (venison/lamb) canned dog foods along with a small amount of water to moisten the mixture. For variety, cottage cheese is a good choice for a change. | GENERAL CARDIGAN CARE

General Care Cardigans are relatively easy to care for. Their coat is all-weather and generally clean and orderless. A proper coat will require little bathing as their double coat will typically shed water and dirt without brushing. Shedding: Cardigans do have two primary shedding periods. One in the spring and the second in the fall. Because of their double coat, there will still be shedding that occurs outside of these times. Two things will help keep shedding to a minimum - 1. Use a good dog food/kibble diet; and 2. weekly grooming by keeping your dog's coat brushed and combed to remove the dead undercoat. While shedding, daily brushing and combing is recommended. Trimming Nails: Trim toe nails weekly to maintain a comfortable length. If you are unable to trim the nails, enlist the services of a professional groomer or your veterinarian. Teeth Cleaning: Make sure your dog's teeth are kept clean and free of tartar. There are a variety of natural products available that are safe and will encourage chewing and promote dental health. Giving a knuckle/soup bone weekly or twice a month (untreated and raw) or a turkey neck (raw) from a reliable source is an inexpensive way to maintain your Cardigans dental health. Not to mention that they love the treats.
