FC: Geography Through A Child's Eye

1: One day in Mrs. Clay's class they were learning about geography. "Okay class, come gather around the globe!", instructed Mrs. Clay, "Today we are going to learn about the six elements of geography! Doesn't that sound exciting?" "No, not really Mrs. Clay." said Bryan, one of Mrs. Clay's students. "Why can't we just color a map or something?" | "Because", Mrs. Clay explained, "you are in the fourth grade now and you need to learn more instead of coloring." "Okay....." Bryan sighed. "Great! Now there are only ^ elements to remember. The First element is The World In Spatial Terms." Bryan raised his hand. "Yes Bryan?" asked Mrs. Clay. "What does that mean? The World In Spatial Terms?" "Well Bryan", answered Mrs. Clay, "there are three terms to think about when thinking about spatial terms, the first is Spatial Relations-how places, people, and features of the earth are connected because of their location.", Explained Mrs. Clay, "The next term is Absolute Location-the exact latitude and lingitude at which a place is found on the globe."

2: "The last term is Relative Location which describes a place's location in relation to another place." Mrs. Clay finished, "See class, wasn't that easy?" | "Yes Mrs. Clay." replied the class "Now", Mrs. Clay went on, "lets get to the next element!" | "The next element is Places and Regions.", Mrs. Clay explained, "Five parts make up this element. First is a place-a particular space on Earth with physical and human meaning." | "The next part is a region-a group of places that are united by shared characteristics. Another is-" "Wait!", Bryan shouted, "Slow down Mrs. Clay."

3: "Whats wrong Bryan?", Mrs. Clay asked,"Am i going to fast?" "Well i guess not Mrs. Clay but i just don't understand some of the words you are saying." "Okay. So let me go back and review." said Mrs. Clay .

4: "Spatial Relations is-hoe places, people, and features of the earth are connected because of their location. What this means in simpler terms is like saying that it is hotter in Florida than New York because it is further down south than New York, and its hotter in Florida because its closer to the Equator and the sun shines more in places that are closer to the equator. Also its saying that polar bears live in artics because it is colder down in the artics and they have more fur to keep then warm." Mrs. Clay explained.

5: "Now class, absolute location is the exact latitude and longitude at which a place is found on the globe. Its like giving your friend your adress when they are going to come over to your house. Your adress is the exact location on the street. You are the only house with that adress." Mrs. Clay told the class.

6: "Oh! Okay! That makes more since now!" Exclaimed Bryan. "Well thats good", said Mrs. Clay,"but im not finished yet. Next is relative location which means describing a places location in relation to another place. For example, if your friend is coming to your house and another person they know lives on your street you could say, ' I live 4 houses down from Johnny's house.' that way it would be easier to find your house." explained Mrs. Clay

7: '" Next is a place. A place is a particular space on earth with physical and human meaning." explained Mrs. Clay. "Where you all are sitting right now is a place. The schools is a place. Everywhere you go you are going to a place. Its that simple!" Shouted Mrs. Clay

8: "Okay now back to where we left off." continued Mrs. Clay, "Next is a region-a group of places that are united by shared characteristics. Like at school the 4th grade classrooms are close together because they are all for 4th graders."

9: "Next, a formal region-an area defined by a common characteristic.", explained Mrs. Clay, "For example down south would be a formal region because it has a common characteristic of being hot and humid."

10: "Oh now it is all starting to make sense!" exclaimed Bryan. "Whats next Mrs. Clay?"

11: "Next is a functional region-a central place and outlying areas linked to it by transit systems for example." Mrs. Clay told them. | "Mrs. Clay what does all of that mean?", asked Bryan. | " Well Bryan," Mrs. Clay said, "What that basically means is like for example in New York City nobody really lives there but they live in suburbs and the suburbs are all connected by roads and train tracks and subways."

12: "Next is perceptual region which is defined by popular feelings and images rather than by objective data. What this is saying is a region of cities that are popular or unpopular or whatever people feel is a category to put certain cities into. Like for popular cities you could say New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Dallas." Mrs. Clay explained.

13: "The next element is physical systems. The term physical systems means volcanoes, floods, and hurricanes that shape the earth’s surface." Mrs. Clay said. | "What this means is that when ever there is a volcano eruption, or a flood or a hurricane its shapes the earth's surface. This happens because when there is a volcanic eruption lava acts as like a concrete and when it dries it becomes a part of the surface. When there is a flood the water erodes the earth's surface and this also happens during a hurricane and during a hurricane there is also wind which also erodes the earth."Mrs. Clay explained.

14: "The fourth element is human systems. What this means is that when humans settle on the earth we alter what it is like physically." Mrs. Clay explained, "Also it means that people move goods and ideas to new places."

15: "The fifth element is environment and society. This means that people affect the environment by clearing or planting forests, building industries and cities, and hunting animals, and this causes big problems because hunting animals can mess up the food chain and so can clearing forests. This also means that features of the environment such as mountain ranges and deserts often pose barriers to human migration." Mrs. Clay told the class.

16: "The final element of geography is the uses of geography. Geographers provide important information about the planet’s physical features and processes, living things, and human systems. Such information describes the planet and contributes to planning for future needs. We need geographers to do this because we need to be prepared for the future and they can help us with that." Mrs. Clay said.

17: "Okay class do you all understand now?" Mrs. Clay asked. "Yes Mrs. Clay." the students replied. "Bryan," Mrs. Clay said, "do you understand now?" Yes Mrs. Clay." Bryan replied, "Now that you have explained it, it makes more since." "Good Mrs. Clay said. Then the bell rang and class was over.
